Hi, I have also currently joined a boutique law firm specializing in litigation and arbitration, I am also assisting a recently designated Sr Counsel in their work. if I have to move to a bigger firm after a 1 Year's experience, how should I go about it. I am mostly working on commercial litigation matters and arbitration matters (international and domestic), how does a move to a bigger firm (Tier 1 and Tier 2) look like and how should I plan and prepare for the same.

Have an internship lined up at a firm through a client's reference. Solid company. No other reference in the law field, and this one isnt too direct a connection either. Will it affect my chances, positive or negative, at all?

Bit of a stupid question, but if I could get an answer, it would help at this time when jobs are scarcer. BO2028 and the internship are in January, if that helps. I know people pulling references are not looked at kindly, but for me its better than being unemployed when getting an internship has become so stressful.

No one has to drag NLIU into the mud, it’s already dirty. NLIU’s PCC brought how many ppos last year….even this year? The institution is filled with bootlicking of seniors….where true merit has been overlooked by biased behaviour. Majority of good students from NLIU are not getting placed, and the mooting culture is also slowly dying. Let’s not start with publications now, lol.

See if you want to stay near Home MNLU should be the pick. but believe me when I say this leaving the comfort of home changes people. if you wanna compare colleges NLIU is better comparatively to MNLU. a good alumni base and flagship events in the country means something in a fluctuating legal market and it would be reflected in coming years. even if you run current placements no. for the 27 batch that is ongoing NLIU comes out better. although MNLU is a absolutely good choice as well if you want to stay near home, there is nothing you can't do at MNLU that you can at NLIU. I would recommend getting in touch with alumni of both the colleges then make a call. good luck

Very easy to say this when you have no idea about NLIU itself.
In my initial year at NLIU, I can honestly say I wasn't very happy with it and mainly because of comments like this that serve no constructive purpose, other than dragging NLIU's name in the mud.

But, in my second year onwards, I truly realised how good NLIU is. They provide a platform for almost anything - Sporting and Moots are reimbursed (compare this to other T1s such as NLSIU or GNLU that barely provide any funding + alumni at NLIU fund almost anything for their juniors), arguably has the most number of active centre's and cells amongst all the NLU's which are adequately backed and financed by the administration, their outreach is also increasing (even a podcast has been started), a beautiful campus and campus life is great as well, many complain about accommodation (but then take a look at MNLU itself, or NLSIU, GNLU, NUJS, their accommodation is 10x worse), the internship opportunities continue to flow in with tier 1s regularly providing batch internships or through courses at NLIU (trust me being a student at NLIU gives you an advantage at these courses and its very easy for an internship), it regularly host events such as the SBA Law Conclave which hosts supreme court judges and other eminent legal individuals, placements are also decent (contrary to what the trailing message says, the last year was an anomaly and most T1s did not enjoy great placements as such - Nalsar 12?).
Please think twice before you drag NLIU in the mud. It is a great college and will continue on an upward path.

Theres no denying the past, but that doesn't mean that the student community (Which runs the college and grants you all the freedom you need) has not worked tirelessly to rectify and fix past issues. And its a joke that you think it would fall below MNLU Mumbai which neither has a campus or placements until now.

A2 here in GC practice in a T1 firm. My health has deteriorated to some extent since I joined the firm. Sometimes I feel like collapsing, other days I have headaches and backaches. At the same time, I wonder how many partners at my firm are so fit. Of course there are obese folks ( and I mean obese to the point it is concerning) and folks with heart and blood pressure issues but most of them are fit, regular to gym and healthy than even many associates. Litigation lawyers I would say are way better. Even at the age of 80-90 they work late nights. They appear way better than my dad and mom who had work-life-balance all their life. Is it the case that I am just looking at minority of folks who survived and not the ones who left or is it that working hours don't really affect your health as your body gets used to it.

I am at a crossroads of sorts and need some help from this community to decide what next steps I should take. Some context: I am from a T-1 college and had previously done internships with law firms across three practice areas, with m&a being one of those. Unfortunately, day z didn't pan out well for me despite have decent grades and profile and I could not get any converts. Now long after the hiring has closed for 2026, I have managed to get an internship (just an internship, with the promise that if I do well they would consider me for an assessment) at a T-2 firm in their IP practice. The problem is this is not where my heart is at (I had some IP related internships and hence got a shortlist), and although the internship would look great on my CV, I don't see myself doing IP long term at all. Unfortunately, none of the m&a teams are offering assessments for the batch of 2026. I am stuck in hard and rock place mentally and just a depressive state, even though this internship is my only decent shot at getting employed. My only concern is: My CV looks so scattered that I come across as someone who does not know what they want. What do I do? Should I forego this internship, or do it anyway and keep applying to corp places? ( But none of these places are hiring, or even offering assessments including the boutiques). Alternatively, if people have leads for corp and m&a boutiques, I would be very happy to pursue those too. Please help a kid out!

Many are writing books, doing podcasts, TV interviews etc. All because Instagram got them there. But how successful are they in terms of their practice, using metrics like income, clients, no of cases etc? Or are they simply not interested in that hustle and would rather be known as influencers and media celebrities? Not at all interested in things like AOR exam, senior gown, tier 1 law firm partnerships etc?

This was an issue big enough for you to write a wholeass post on Legally India? It's free food and a chance to form a functional relationship with your boss. Go home and eat a full pot of dal makhni, who's stopping you? You can't eat naan without making it a personality trait? Can't believe I'm sympathising with a law firm Partner.

Working at a T1 law firm. My partner prefers to take the team out for lunch every Friday, as long there isn’t too much work. However, he’s insanely into Asian food and gets annoyed if people do not roll with his preferences. I objected to having raw fish but he gave me such a look of disappointment that I ended up having it. He also commented saying that sometimes I need to step out of my comfort zone.

How do I back out politely without ruining my impression? I am someone who loves flavourful North Indian dishes but the concerned partner hates almost all Indian cuisines.

How awful man. First the work culture is like an mnc with extended hours. Completely toxic. Then u go on a vacation with them. Cant even get a minute to yourself in peace. Litigation is far better than this. In law firms u open a screen and pretend to work all the while doing clerical work and having no future and name. Litigation gives you so much.

OP here. I know the pay is peanuts but I have been unsuccessful in getting into Corporate. Did 2 assessments at T-1s and bagged 2 interviews through placement committee, but still couldn't get in. I'm not gonna place it entirely on luck but yeah I couldn't conveniently get a reason for my shortcomings neither from myself nor from the seniors in those firms, even though they happened to act like buddies back then. Anyways, now I am unable to sit at home too, looking over my degree, AIBE score and my parent's disappointment, so just gotta start somewhere to start the tap of cash flow even if it is just peanuts.

Hi- I am working in a tier 1 law firm (2 year PQE). Completely burnt out, depressed, crying everyday situation and not getting time to eat properly. No holidays, weekends, festivals- nothing. Toxic partner- always yelling and playing blame game. Been to therapy also but nothing's working. It's affecting my personal relationships as well (couldn't take up that guilt also anymore). Tried hurting also myself physically at a few instances and felt terrible after that.

Yes. Smart kids are now opting for b.com/bba/btech llb more than ba. Similarly newer universities are pushing for a b.tech+llb course. However, this doesn't mean that ba courses will be useless. It depends on how well you can incorporate tech in humanities. Even in humanities, digital humanities is gaining more ground. People are focusing on the philosophy, sociology and psychology of tech and it's allied areas. So everything is revolving around tech, it doesn't mean humanities is dying. It's just evolving.

A current partner at AZB Bengaluru interned after he graduated, until September. He then got in having shown his merit. Not that it says anything definitive about the time you must intern for after graduating, but just know you're not the only one that's ever been in that position.

So, I'm from a T2 NLU. I just got done with my 4th semester, and I have average grades and some extracurriculars. I have studied substantive criminal law and family law, but not laws like administrative law or BNSS. I was wondering if reaching out to independent lawyers, based on their LinkedIn profiles and posts, would get me an internship for July. It is less than 10 days to July, but considering that I could mail a few dozen lawyers, some would hopefully reply. Or would that approach be akin to jumping into a bottomless pit with no results?

Today on ABP Ananda, the complainant who triggered CID investigation against Prince of Corruption Inc for "DJ" dog whistle case made an explosive allegation against a celebrated senior IPS officer (who nearly became the first Muslim CP of KP). It was alleged that the complainant had previously personally handed over confidential information concerning child trafficking by a senior minister of the Grassroots Party. But the IPS did zilch. No one knows what happened thereafter. But that former MLA is very much up and about.

There are so many IPS and WBPS in WB who should be investigated and terminated from service for dereliction of duty, obstructing justice, supression and destruction of evidence, initiating malicious prosecution, harassment and abuse of position and authority. Despite the rhetoric the new govt is busy laying escape routes for Green "rebels" and sabotaging cases against Corruption Inc.

Who else amongst the equity partners left JSA in recent times? Only Kapur who is anyway close to retirement- right?

Quite a few teams have in fact joined JSA in recent times. The firm is expanding. There is no place left at the Mumbai offices including at the new OLP despite acquiring additional space.

Zero. Why don't people understand the basics of what they wish to pursue ? How does a publication even affect working litigation, judiciary or corporate ? Work experience is what matters. Publications are more for an academic career. Some professors don't even have that, lol. But the point is...

Degree-Work exp-internships. That's it !!

The rest mumbo jumbos like moots, mocks, muns, debates, publications are not worth a cent.
