Around 9 months ago, ELP persuaded a smallish prop law practice, which was mostly Real Estate and a bit of employment law, to join them. The RE clients were handed over to one the RE partners who had joined ELP along with Sudip Malik and the new partner was dressed up as an employment law expert. Now he has no choice but to integrate into the new AI-led law firm that will emerge soon!

Under 50k without net. Under 1lakh without phd and net. But definitely More than a newly joined advocate. However that's the limit. The newly joined advocate will overtake you by leaps and bounds in a few year. The reason for comparison, do not join academia if money is your primary motivation.

If you just want a PhD degree, then I would suggest that you look somewhere else. The rigour is much higher, and the output standard is, too. They have made the coursework requirements stringent too, so you will have to stay in Bangalore during the same. There is a reason why scholars from 2015 cannot submit their work till now...

Go to GNLU if you want your degree within 3-4 years and also want it from an NLU. Never go to NALSAR... they sleep on your thesis. I dont know what exactly do they want.

Problem with NLSIU PhD is not the supervisor but the admin. PhD presentations are withheld for long period until you satisfy the imaginary standards of the VC who is not an expert in most of the fields that he opines on. He will overrule your guide and RAC decisions if he wants to. Records will mysteriously disappear. Coursework results will be delayed without rhyme or reason. Overall, the place is no longer the best option for pursuing your PhD from, although some of the guides available are the best in the country.

Hi. I'd like to pursue PhD Programme at NLS seriously in the next Academic Intake. Had a couple of questions regarding the Duration and Rigour of the Programme before applying:

i. Duration - What exactly is the unofficial duration of the PhD Programme ? I have heard people from 2015 are presenting now while the new PhD Regulations between 2020 to 2025 require it to be completed within 6 years (8 in the case of girls) ? What's the UGC Policy regarding this and how is this being. I'm for sure not going to be completing it in 3 or 4 years considering I am also practicing and can't give that up.

ii. As a practicing advocate, I just want to know whether NLS is flexible or it is quite rigorous to handle both at a time. Of course this will depend upon the Supervisor who is allotted, but how is the Institution's perspective ?

I don't mind doing it for a long period of time, but I just want to know what is the experience of present Ph.D. Scholars at the University and how they are spending years and years for the Programme.

P.S. - I have gone through the earlier thread 1 year back regarding this, but it was too generic and went off on a different tangent than the original topic, hence requesting this latest information now before deciding to apply to NLS or to go with any other local university like Mysore University.

Look - I mean I find it really hard to believe that this man is such a virulent casteist that he’s hurling casteist abuse in an exam hall and there haven’t been a string of complaints about him abusing dalit students in other contexts. This is the first time he’s accused of doing something like this and it’s in a room full of students writing exams and the student commits suicide ? What are the odds?

From what I can tell from media- the student wasn’t a slacker either, he was performing quite well but perhaps the stress of things was too much for him. If you’re cheating - it’s literally the job of the invigilator to catch you. That’s not personal for them. And in a place like IITB with their huge batch sizes, I doubt the professor even knew the students name let alone his caste.

Honestly as a law teacher - I can’t tell you the names of all of my students - I can’t even pick some of them out of a line up. That’s is what it is because I have a hundred students every three to four months- I don’t have the time to get to know them or to think about them and their caste gender sexuality whatever. I can only imagine it’s harder at iits with many more students in each batch.

I know either students who are very enthusiastic and topping the batch- or students who disrupt the class and make trouble. Students on the other hand understandably know their professors because they’re listening to them for hours each week. It might be hard for students to put themselves in the position of the teachers. They know all their teachers and have strong opinions about them - cause teachers are fewer in number. It might be incomprehensible or even insulting to some students to realise their teachers don’t know them that well nor have strong opinions. Exam results and disciplinary actions are more often about teacher needing to do his job- either out of a sense of virtue or even reluctantly- rather than personal or group based animus. Teachers don’t even gossip that much about students in my experience. I certainly discussed my teachers more when I was a student than I discuss my students now. Teachers gossip about other teachers primarily. The only real times I’ve discussed students with colleagues is - when I’m telling them I really enjoyed teaching X cause they showed up prepared and asked questions or Y did something very disruptive and disrespectful in class and it pissed me off. For the vast majority of students - this should be a relief- if you keep your head down and do your work - you’re going to blend in at least as far as teachers are concerned.

A lot of the reporting on this stuff is so irresponsible. Dalit students shouldn’t be getting the message that universities are not spaces for them or that they’re excluded or that they have more propensity to commit suicide. That encourages suicides. Instead, we can strengthen mental health services, let students know that not doing well on one exam among hundreds you’ll take during undergraduate course will not ruin your life. And that no one is out to get you or exclude you. It is very possible in 2026 for a dalit student to enter the best universities in the country and do very well and thrive- I have known several who do so everyday. And they should all aspire to that, rather than this learned helplessness.

And honestly each suicide is unique - there’s plenty of causes that lead a person to do that - mental illnesses , family problems, relationship issues, drug dependency, financial worries, job stress all contribute in some way. Exams are maybe a small part of what goes on - but I’d be really surprised if failing one test or having one disco would drive a student to suicide alone. There has to be so much already going on to make a person vulnerable like that.

I have had students confess to me that they were self harming or suicidal - 7 times out of ten it was relationship problems or family dysfunction, 3 times it was a girl who had been sexually abused. Yes exams are stressful, but they are not the kind of stress that breaks most students - most students give exams, do well or not, and move on with their lives. For a person to feel trapped - it has to be something worse. I failed exams in law school - at the time

I was stressed and upset- and then I moved on and did very well in other subjects , and then I worked harder in my job and now I’m doing what I like. But what did drive me to have suicidal thoughts were - romantic rejection, family dysfunction, social bullying by my peers and the death of my baby cat. Teachers were the least of my problems.

I guess what I’m trying to say is - if we want to take student suicide seriously - there has to be more than pin the blame on the teacher. Take it seriously, fix your families , fix how students relate to each other, fix mental health services and fix all this other stuff. It’s easy to pin the blame on the teacher - most teachers feel some sort of responsibility for students and dispositionally would not want to tell bereaved parents and classmates they contributed to it. That doesn’t mean we treat them as sacrificial goats. They’re doing a hard job for very little pay mostly because they like teaching and felt a calling.

I’ve seen people calling for death penalty for the guy on social media. That is gross. I’m sorry it’s just gross to me that anyone can call for killing a teacher who has spent years in service - because one of his students took a wrong turn and committed suicide.

People using identity as leverage in these tragedies should be ashamed of themselves. You can only trade on death for so much without realising your work and activism and purpose requires more and more suffering. And nothing good can come out of this sort of exploitative practice.

No one is contesting her success – many were part of it – though it is repeatedly framed as "all her" here and then we hear a spiel on "teams" and "teamwork" elsewhere.

It's funny you should say this – these past few months I secured my own clients on my own steam. Nothing else gives you confidence – it's not like getting one handed over and faking gratitude – it's earning it and making a relationship on your own and tending to it. I want to see which one of the underlings brings a client. You are structurally screwed in bringing your own clients with her fees, and you cannot undercut her. I remember some folks who even brought their own mandates – how they were scoffed at. Her garden. You're water cans.

Other people also brought mandates and client relationships - so did I. I know what feedback she gave to the client then. The clients talk too. Still talks to me. I also remember when clients whom she deprioritised found comfort in communications with someone else and how she panicked. They still call me. I was scolded for those on several occasions. I also remember her asking to make a list of people with whom I could do a joint BD at some point using my contacts and patronage. I knew then what I was in store for then.

As we parted, I remember her saying, "You should step up in front of clients". It was too late. I was done. To quote a client – "It's just her and some children." Children here means people with no autonomy. Only one person speaks anything of consequence. Rest hand papers and clarify. It is a ridiculous training environment to give anyone senior. Once you get out, empty the crap, and you realise how much you have taken from you. Do not be a bottle carrier all your life - do it on your own.

The day has come, I am asked to leave because people gave bad feedback of my work. But nobody could tell details on work so they literally said that I am not available at night after 12 pm and I didn’t respond to a whatsaap chat immediately which we received from client at 3 am. Hi! I am fresh graduate from a tier 1 university in India. I completed the 5 year law course in May, 2026 and got placed through campus placements on my own merit in a reputed (not a tier 1, but in a tier 2 law firm) with decent pay in Mumbai. Currently, I will complete 3 months working with the gen corp team in the said law firm and will also complete my probation. During law school, I always feared that I would hate working in a corporate set up because I hated studying company law and other corporate laws and my fears have turned to be true. I took up this job so that I could financially support my parents and provide them some mental relief. However, the issue is not only about disliking corporate law, but also that the work culture in these firms is a torture. Since joining, work life balance has gone for a toss. I find myself working for a few hours on weekends as well, doing the work which I absolutely loathe. Working in this environment has taken a toll on my health as well- I experience sleepless nights, indigestion, headaches, mild fever, body aches and had an intense panic attack this weekend. Considering my experience, I think of quitting this job every single day. In fact, I feel so traumatised by the entire experience, that I have begin doubting if I should switch my career from law to some other field (for example- management after pursuing an MBA). I have communicated my concerns to my parents, however, they believe that it is just a matter of time till I get used to this life. Is it too early to hand in my resignation on completing 3 months? I have not landed on another job yet. (pursuing an LLM, MBA, litigation and academia are options I am exploring). I look up to genuine advice, thank you so much.

Yup heard that it's a 24/7 war zone like chamber, especially since matters concerning, CBI and ED are his bread and butter mainly and present day government hasn't let both these departments relax even for a bit.

I know someone who's crazily passionate about law and litigation but barely could survive there for 5-6 months. Consequently he went to join another government counsel's office.

Not all 160 sit for the placements on Day0/1 - a lot of them already get PPOs in 4/5th year, some plan to do LLMs immediately after, a few just aren't interested in sitting for corporates/firms (and want to instead directly join policy think tanks etc) - so its a very mixed bag situation, based on what people a specific batch are interested in. If you're asking about competitiveness - it's not CRAZY competitive and if you have decent grades, and decent internships, you will be shortlisted, and then how you crack the interview is completely your own work in those 30-40 minutes.

Not a good look for the humanities and reinforces harmful stereotypes of the humanities as a dumping ground. Doesn’t do much for the reputation of CLC grads either.

Learning history and political science and sociology is crucial to learning constitutional law and criminal law and family law. Learning economics is crucial to understanding contracts and companies and mergers and banking. Crucial- not just nice to have. Even English and law and literature and philosophy - done right makes you better at statutory interpretation and judicial processes.

I have taught both BA llb students and bba llb students- they’re all bright - but every teacher in my uni would tell you they have to spend a significant chunk of time with their bba llb students explaining basic concepts because they didn’t do the social sciences / humanities courses. And there’s a hole in the middle of their legal education.

Having lived through the whims, mood swings, and petty power games of this team’s partners, I know exactly how much damage they have caused to careers of many associates. After years of manipulation, favouritism, and passive‑aggressive bullying, I genuinely hope and pray CAM puts them through atleast a fraction of the chaos this team has inflicted on the associates.

Why 5 more marks ? Why not 20 ? Why not 50? Why not decide how many oppression points each person has and then set different benchmarks for them based on 3000 years of poverty and psychological trauma ? Most people in this country are poor or have had parents who were poor. Most people have psychological trauma.

The exams aren’t meant for privileged elites - they’re not asking you to recite the vedas or asking you to sail yachts. They’re asking you questions about materials they have spent a semester teaching you. Just study, pay attention in class, take notes, study with friends, see what your class toppers do and copy them.

Honestly there’s laziness and then there’s something worse. This is something worse- law subjects are not hard - anyone with an IQ over hundred is well capable of learning the subjects - it’s not quantum physics you don’t need to be a genius- you just need to put in the work. It’s one thing to try and get every advantage you can - it’s another thing that’s actually evil - to use the death of a person or the horrors of the caste system - to try and get some petty advantage in academics.

If we give every dalit student in India a ten point advantage in every test they take - will the suicides stop ? Is that really your answer ? What a simple mind ! No one can possibly believe that is the answer- so you must be arguing for it disingenuously.

Only in a country like India where the academia quality is garbage level will somebody ask this. In all other sensible countries, "I have a PhD, a publication record in good journals, a strong plan for future research, a writing sample of PhD thesis chapter length and a teaching qualification like UK SFHEA - is that close to enough?".
