Delhi office is not a good environment to work in. Lots of attrition, most who stay are in the good books of partners who prioritise office dynamics over work and productivity. That would be fine, if they didn't pay exactly on par with a T3. They also have a weird trend of pigeonholing associates and freshers as "paralegals", which makes you lose 6 months while peers go from A0 to A1. There, it's P to A0 to A1.

I feel dedicated hire can work great instead of ATP if you have a good team who's hired you and you use the first year to learn like a maniac. You get an edge over the ATP associate who'll only start at their permanent seat one year after you, and this works well for you in terms of competition with your peers for higher rating/pay/promotion etc. The downside is that if you get stuck in a bad team, or want to move for whatever reason, you can't.

Whatever you said about corporate world, the fact remains that when the student is in that world, they would never dress like that. Why should an academic not believe that it is the standard required in his world too? He's taking the trouble to dress properly. As for this shifting the goalpost to academic performance or merit, one can have that and take the trouble of dressing if not formally, then at least the same that they would elsewhere when they are off doing anything serious. Do the students wear shorts while mooting or ADR competitions? Is that the corporate world?

In a classroom, the teacher is allowed to make that decision. Just like in an office, the employer does make that decision to a considerable extent. What you wear outside the class is indeed your choice. When you make the choice to put in the effort while interning or working, but refuse to do so while going to the classroom, you are making clear where your priorities lie. No. At the end of the day, the content of your ideas and knowledge is what matters, when you go to the bottom line. Formal dress or whatever will, at best, be impressive packaging. In the corporate world, where so many things are based on first impression, it is important to get the packaging right. At the same time, even in that world, whether or not you can get the job done is what is far more important. You might have a slick personal presentation style which makes you good to put in front of clients, but if you don't have the knowledge, skills or ideas to cope with the demands of a client's problem(s), the quality of your speaking style and your dress sense will matter little. I think most clients would rather pay £800 an hour or whatever they do tend to pay for the services of commercial lawyers to someone who may have forgotten to shave when they came into work on a particular day and has blue stubble all over his chin but has something substantive and smart to say, than to someone whose face looks completely smooth but whose ideas are of little use to anybody.

However in the world of academia, where first impressions are less important, which requires careful thought, sustained reflection, constant revision of ideas, this is not the case. I don't see a student whose written and verbal answers to a professor are unremarkable, but who takes the effort to dress well, getting a recommendation letter or better marks over a student who may dress less formally but whose intellect is up there.

Yeah this is dumb logic. The degree doesn't automatically take you to the other side of the rainbow. It does a few things to help you help yourself. There is nothing desperate about applying for jobs. Hey man. I am a partner in a law firm and we recently interviewed a candidate who had his ELO rating on his CV (1600 if i remember correctly). The other interviewers looked at me for confirmation on whether this was something impressive. So I asked him if it was an OTB ELO rating and he confirmed. This lead to a bit of a discussion in the interview about chess, ratings, tournaments etc. Overall, it can work as an ice-breaker and demonstrate that you have some skills outside of work. But since your rating is a Chess.com rating rather than the FIDE Elo rating, you should be prepared to field that question, if someone asks. I personally dont think it's bad for you to put it under your extra-curricular section. Obviously, this isnt what gets you a job though, so work on the rest of the CV. All the best!

She was the last sane member in team RHB, only one with her own book of interesting work and marquee clients, and genuine empathy for juniors. Also allowed juniors to diversify compared to the run-of-the-mill PE/VC deals the rest of the team keeps dying with. Very big loss for the team, in terms of books as well as team morale.

I had a great experience at my workplace. The practice size was small, but we had some really high flying real estate clients and our boss had some business dealings in Dubai. We worked till 7, late nights were a rarest of rare scenario, coming in was also not tight leashed. If I had a matter fixed for 12pm, Could directly go to court. The staff was really nice, had enough internal politics to keep me entertained.

I dress up for work, i love dresses, long skirts, fitted blazers and tailored pieces. Indian wear looks good only if its solids and well fitted. Printed kurtas give off too much of a DU vibe and to me the silhouette of Indian wear unless fitted looks frumpy . I keep it modest because men are creeps. Having said that, everyone around me dresses kinda shabbily and no one seems to have a problem with it. But to be real the better dressed you are the more seriously people take you, so grab your grandmas pearls and put on your best lip shade and get in there. Also dress for the body you have not the body you want. Cannot emphasize this enough.

Also, easy is not the way to think of it. There's base formula of success which anyone can reach within 6-7 years of law school and then there are idiosyncratic qualities that each school looks for. Good referees go a long way. Think professors who can write a letter with examples that actually persuade hiring committees, and one or two others at the top of your field, like a judge or a UN special rapporteur or a successful alum of the university you are applying to. Learn to write good application essays that are tailored to your profile. That much will take you to Harvard. The other two it is hard to say what they are looking for each year. Make sure your essays and recommendations are really competitive is all I can say.
