Which city are you in? There is an ocean of opportunities out there. You just need one to get things on track. Trust me, that will happen in its own course. The uncertainty that you are experiencing is typical of hundreds and thousands of law students like you, including those from the NLUs. That said, a majority of the openings are with smaller firms and individual practitioners who may not pay you what you hope for or what the bigger firms pay. Brace yourself for that. Start small if you have to. The single greatest harm you can do to your career is to compare yourself with peers in the initial stages. Accept the fact that there will always be someone else who has got a break into a more prominent firm or got a bigger salary. In the long run, these don't matter. Grab the smallest opportunity you get and take things from there. Just wear blinkers and focus on what you have at hand. The intrinsic value of what you learn in the first five years of the profession (and beyond that too) is far far greater than the monetary value, and that is what is going to keep you in good stead down the line. The discomfort that you are feeling now is actually a blessing in disguise and it is this feeling of not wanting to be where you are which is going to propel you achieve.

Hi folks, I’m exploring trainee / associate roles in corporate or transactional law in Mumbai. I have 0-1 year of experience. Looking for teams that offer some exposure and aren’t toxic (yes I know that’s asking for a lot 😅).

Sitting late nights is absolutely fine, because who the hell cares about health and family when “money” is being made. Anyway, what will associates do after going back home! Not like they have a personal life to lead. Oh wait!!

The problem with these “young guy” Boomer partners is that they refuse to understand that other people may want to spend time with their loved ones, pursuing a hobby, doing something meaningful with their lives after work. Unlike the partner, they don’t have the luxury to stroll into office in the afternoon, but have to stay put till Lord sits on his chair at night. The point of working so hard and earning money is to able to spend it with your near and dear ones. Looks like you don’t understand the concept.

That's a lot of presumption about a fairly young guy,as far as these senior partners go. He could easily accumulate capital for a few more years before stepping away on his own. And as long as his team is growing and making money ( which I hear they are) i doubt anyone will give a damn about a few late nights, especially as he will get older and more hands off.

I mean this is just a bizzare comment. If you bring business, a team, growth prospects and a business plan every Firm will welcome you. Not every Firm has a nonsensical partnership deed like Luthras that can't hold up to scrutiny. He would have multiple firms looking at him. The real question is he really stepping away?

VK runs a book of 30 crores. Any firm would love to take the team. Same for BJ. One is running a team of 20 lawyers and the other of 40 lawyers. Facts speak for themselves. I know for a fact that they have been independently approached by many of the Big Firms. MS needs to realise that his dynastic approach towards running a fiefdom can work in Mahabharata- not in a law firm. He needs to professionalize it asap.

There's a whole ecosystem at work that favours nepo kids to get such scholarships. Favoured internships, reference letters and finally the interview, conducted by some family uncle or aunty. Can also cite a case of a certain NLU alum who briefly taught at NUJS (again, only older alumni will know).

International arbitration used to be the most travel but now most of the hearings have shifted to video conference.

If you want to travel a lot within in India, do WCC / investigations. But mind you, this will also involve extensive travel to random Tier 8 towns and their police stations where the client factory or warehouse is located. Spending days in a Korba or a Ongole is not inherently fun but few might enjoy it.

Travel for conferences and BD is more or less the same throughout each practice area.
