Why is this post contested? Records on NUJS website or elsewhere in media don't show SH complaints being made in the initial decade of univ establishment. But thereafter, LI itself reported extensively on the PA vs then AR Admin; the shenanigans of a certain Registrar who was sacked (again kudos to LI for reporting on the Justice PN Sinha inquiry); SJA backed complaints got Lord Taluk to change ICC composition including removal of its then Chair; and now this. Hey, seeing a lot of replies from other peers who have actually interned with the direct tax team censuring the above reply. I wanted to add to the same as my experience was far from what has been claimed here. For context, I was allotted to the Tax team at Delhi at the last minute despite opting for a different practice area and location. I must say that things worked out for the better, I had the opportunity to work under the mentorship of Yash Varmani sir who was not only approachable but made the entire experience extremely comfortable considering I wasn't from the city. The associates (and I must specifically mention Ishita Sharma Ma'am) are genuinely sweet and ensured that work was not only allotted but understood. Mistakes were not looked down upon but seen as learning opportunities, for which I will always be thankful. Lastly, I must mention that I later interned with another team of Trilegal in a different location where the experience was completely different and incomparable to the one I had with Himanshu Sinha sir's team in Delhi. I choose not to go into the specifics because as the saying goes, if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything.

Yes. Idea is to not think of work as your entire life - even if it’s taking up major part of it. Work is not the sole priority nor your sole purpose in life. If you’re happy (read: okay) spending the hours etc. to actually use your brain for other things (be it philosophy, skills, etc.)

Alright: Law firm life is certainly not the most fantastic way to be spending your time, I can happily grant that argument, because it isn't. It is, however, a good way to earn lots of money. But to say that litigation is, has to be utter rubbish. Without being a nepobaby, in India, the kind of thing this fantasist is talking about is impossible - utterly impossible - to do. Moderators, please do the responsible thing and mark this comment 'contested trollish'.

Some advice.

Firstly, on a lighter note change the default to something cheerful sounds. On every device. Sounds silly but the difference is that its intentional. You also stop jumping when other folks phones buzz. Making the buzz different. Its also some form of control you exert back in a life where you have little control. You need to laugh a bit when the buzzer does buzz. Your work is not that serious.

Second, you need to destress. Try to get as much of a physical workout in as possible. Also I cannot stress on how you must cultivate a friends circle outside. Those in office are not your friends. They will sell you out for a bag of crisps. They wait till there is no use for you. So make friends beyond the law or law firms. So, basically, go outside a bit and live outside a bit.

Third, see a doctor and a shrink. This is the beginning of anxiety issues and BP issues. This will translate quickly into physical issues. Do this early - even if you feel alright about it. Many people put this away. If you have family nearby - make time to bond with them on weekends, if you like kids - the better.

Fourth, don't shop or browse the internet.

Start a hobby using your hands instead. It will focus your brain. A good way is to intentionally start eating food cooked by you. Cooking also gets you to take care of your health and usually if you dont go overboard - budget friendly. Lots of good advice around cooking and eating healthy if you know where to look. Main upside, you are doing something for yourself. A treat for yourself. A reward. Its a bit of self love that will go a long way. It tells you why attending those buzzes is helping you live better.

Don't aim for mastery of the craft. Aim for mastery of the process. At the end, B&F transactions are all process driven and no body gives a flying duck about the craft as long as docs are signed in time and borrowers get their drawdown (save and except a few high profile structured finance deals where lot of brain goes into structuring and then rest is just paper pushing).

1. Are you sure about the critical thinking bit? Have you ever attended a classroom lecture by the likes of BS Chimni, Amita Dhanda, or the various younger NLU alumni profs teaching in various places? Have you ever read the journals published by NLSIU, or the NUJS Law Review?

2. Isn't nepotism deterring NLU grads from joining the bar and bench? At least two NLSIU alumni withdrew their judicial nominations after their apppointments were being stalled, whereas all the children of judges have become judges.

3. Corporate professionals dominate the 1% of Indians who pay income tax and subsidise the 99% of poor Indians (plus freeloaders like politicians). For the first time in history, individual IT collections outnumber corporate tax collections. By giving 30% of their income to the government, and receiving nil subsidies, corporate professionals effectively work 4 months in a year free for the government. Is that not public service?

I made the most mistake of going independent too soon. It took me several years to build back a stable income because no firm/company wants to touch an independent counsel. So tread carefully.

Also, do not follow examples. Someone mentioned Gourab Banerjee, well his father was Attorney General and was extremely well connected, so he need not have joined anyone's chambers.

Same with Kapil Sibal, his father Advocate General for Punjab and was extremely well connected.

A chamber gives you an identity in court, so it is important. I know some people who have done well independently immediately after graduation but they are the exception rather than the rule and you do not know what connections they have.
