FOREVER GRATEFUL. Thanks.
Not kidding, I became one for life.
Bombay is the best place to start. Choose your guns wisely. Question yourself, do you want to practice under an advocate or be a brief counsel for the rest of your life? Mostly, the T1 law firms' Partners in this practice do not appear before the SAT directly. It's always the stalwarts who handle these cases. The T1 partners only act as briefing counsels.
The law firms itself mostly handle SEBI AO and WTM proceedings. The big guns come to play when it comes to appellate jurisdiction. Matters can at times get very mundane, with only the data and clients changing. But hey, it's the case with every practice. But securities practice gives you a two-way benefit - a test of transaction/commercial advisory (with respect to SEBI regulations) and full-blown litigation/adjudication. It's a niche practice area and does not scope beyond Bombay, so choose wisely.
MDP Legal, Khaitan & Co, Trilegal, Bombay Law Chambers, AZB Partners, Law Point - are some of the known faces in the securities practice circuit. (No Regstreet is not one of them. At least personally, I would not consider them, because they mostly act as solicitor, they just act as a middleman for the client and the lawyer/firm that would be appearing on behalf of the client.)
Joby is great for on hand experience. Shruti is an amazing multitasker, and I think she is one of the few T1 partners who plead themselves before the SAT. Don't know much about Prakash Shah, but he is listed with most matters.
Every other law school provides a timely placement report upon the batch graduating, while NUJS hasn't released one for the past two years. The NUJS RCC needs to rethink their approach, this opaqueness does not inspire confidence and only makes it seem like NUJS has weaker placements than they want you to believe.
Dad passing away is a big deal. It’s understandable that your academic life would be affected. Sorry you had to join dead dads club. It sucks.
Well done on bouncing back.
And yes, if you are regular in Court, it will help your chances in being designated, subject, of course, to you not being a rubber stamp for filing matters.
As far as income is concerned, there are a number of ways you will earn:
1. Lawyers will refer matters to you. Mostly these are drafted by them and you have to file. These are usually fixed fee matters and the fee can range anywhere from 10K to 33K or even more. In some cases you can get a per appearance fee or bill for individual drafts or some sort of a staggered fee arrangement. Tap all your outstation contacts to get briefs (there are lawyers who make monthly trips to HCs to get matters). Bear in mind that the lawyer referring the matter to you may have charged the client 2X your fee by telling the client that it's your fee.
2. Clients engage you to draft and file matters. These are higher paying depending on the stakes involved, and you can quote whatever you want factoring in your experience, the client's ability to pay, etc. Unless you have a client base beforehand, this is unlikely as other lawyers will generally not refer clients to you.
3. Panels or retainerships. If you can, please apply for panels, including Legal Aid. If eligible, undergo the mediation training. These are small things but add up over time.
4. Street smart clerks will get you matters through their own networks. These are usually low paying matters and the clerk will include his portion in the fee which is quoted to the client.
5. Find a chamber or law firm or senior who/which does not have an AoR or is looking to change their AoR. A lot of your work may come from lawyers unhappy with their previous AoRs, or lawyers looking for AoRs with lesser fee. As a new AoR, you need to capitalise on any opportunity in an already saturated market. If you can deliver, people will engage you on a regular basis, and even if you have 2-3 lawyers who swear by you, it should keep briefs coming in regularly, in addition to frequent court appearances.
Be alive to the fact that a large number of AoRs clear the examinations every year. While someone may approach you to get a quote, presume they are also checking the market to find AoRs with lesser fee. There will always be someone who will be willing to quote a lesser fee than you, so it's all on your network and you to convert the client or get lawyers to send you briefs.
Needless to state, all of this hinges on you clearing the examinations, and good luck to you for that. Brush up on writing speed and watch the lectures relevant for your examination year.

Go ahead but still use your own words, my friend!
All the best
SAM has Meta, Microsoft, Flipkart & couple of cases against Google. These are their permanent clients apparently and the team keeps on getting a lot of work from other big companies like Reliance, Tata, etc.
What Trilegal competition gets from their GC / M&A/ Disputes is divided amongst AM, Gautam and Gauri’s teams so no guarantee that you will get good matter.
AM team of course stands out with the likes of Kshitij & Karan but comes with uncertainty of getting decent matters. AM should have been made head of their competition team. She has the potential to bring their team close to if not at par with SAM Competition Team.
SAM’s HSS Team single-handedly does more matters & billing than all three of Trilegal competition partners combined.
Corruption, financial mismanagement, a lot of things play a part, but it is quite sad that "National" Law Universities have to rely on these admissions to squeeze extra money.
They're not going to go anywhere or change without massive institutional shifts.
I expected the notice period - to idk? - be chiller, and give me time figuring out the next steps, but now I am thinking of ways of resigning from resignation itself.
Please do suggest, ye' smarties of LI!
I attended an interview at R K Dewan chennai office, and I've been offered with an assessment internship for a period of 2 months which will be unpaid. After which I'll be taken in for a full time role of things go well but they've not told me anything regarding the pay once it gets converted which I hope I'll be able to do. I've seen in some threads that the pay is around 55-65 but I feel that's for the Mumbai office.
If anyone has any inputs regarding salary for an associate with 0 PQE at the chennai office
Please let me know at the earliest.
