I'm working 10-12 hour days on the regular. Law firm job. F*cking love the work (shoot me). Commute is short but I end up so drained I just doomscroll, watch a show, eat, then sleep, then next day. Weekends are better but don't feel enough. I love the work but it's just a bit frustrating not having time.

Need some actual, helpful advice on how to carve out time to have a life, to work out and be healthy (nothing absurd wrt fitness goals – just health), etc.

Also, quite typical for someone from JSA to equate time spent in office to work output or amount of work on the table. Several blue collar workers work 12 hour shifts, but 3-4 hours put in by a white collar worker generates more value than those 12. Also as a team coming from SAM which had a wfh policy, the team members were comfortable with working from home all while producing the same output. Recent M&A rankings by deal volume confirm this as well. The team left simply because JSA couldn’t show up with the bag$.

For moots we are doing pretty well, but that doesn't mean anything because firms don't want to take any of us. Actually, we live in a very high bubble of ours where we believe that winning moots does something where even our own seniors who were convenors of the mooting society are earning 18,000 per month salary even after 2 years of working.

Take my two cents of advice. Law schools are the shittiest place to make friends—peak toxicity. Not saying everyone is like that, but yeah, while making friends, always take their sugar-coated words with a pinch of salt. This is not just for law school, but in life in general.
The real friend(s) will be the ones who will criticise you and try to correct your ways - not in public but in a personal space. They will be the ones who will be brutally honest with you. They will be happy with your success, but also ready to correct your ways if possible. Secondly, never have too many expectations of your friends. This EXPECTATION destroys a lot of friendships and relationships. Always have the bare minimum expectations, and you will see the world to be a better place to live. Third - this is my personal take - always make friends with whom your career goals don't align. This will save you from future heartbreaks and jealousy. You guys won't be competing with each other. That should be your end goal.

At last, enjoy life a bit. heartbreaks, betrayal, and jealousy are part of life. They teach you whom to trust and whom to love and from whom you should always maintain a safe distance. Learn from the mistakes. Don't frown upon them.

what nonsense. There is no MRP in america. Things cost what they cost and if you dont like it you can go elsewhere. You cannot seriously argue that foreigners dont get ripped off in these places- there are entire articles about scams you should avoid. Autos in bangalore no longer run by the meter because folks from outside bangalore started paying obscene amounts and because the apps made that mode of doing business outdated. No uber/ola/rapido/namma yatri is going to charge you more based on anything to do with your language. If i stop an auto driver and ask him to drop me somewhere- he will ask me for an outrageous amount also. Its only because I have the language that I am able to haggle with him. He knows only the languages he knows. If you know the language he speaks and haggle with him he will haggle with you too. Its not prejudice. Its just the fact that you dont speak the same language as the person youre trying to negotiate with that will obviously put you at a disadvantage. Its not an injustice.

Higher rent was justified because I was a practical stranger to her with no one in the city that could vouch for me. I shrugged it off as cost of doing business. I've left phones, laptops, wallets in autos a number of times in bangalore and theyve always been returned to me or left at the police station. I have had parents and relatives collapse with a stroke on the street and strangers have put them in the hospital and left them with their belongings and stayed till I got there. Theres no cameras or at least no one monitoring cameras in most supermarkets. Thats a high trust society. It just is one in which you will still feel like an outsider because you are. Why do you never think about what you're doing to endear yourself to those who are already in the city? apart from complaining and calling us bigots?

Anyone who desires to live long term in any state should know at least the basics of that language. If you look at the European Union, every member state (at least in the Schengen Zone - mentioning this since Ireland does not fall under the Schengen Zone), mandates knowledge of their language upto a certain level as per the CEFR (Atleast B1 in most EU countries).

That said, violence can never be condoned. Slapping someone or beating someone if they don't speak your language is absolutely unacceptable. Maharashtra could do with learning from Tamil Nadu - be completely proud of your own language, have a powerful and good local film industry (like Kollywood), and more importantly, Maharashtrians living in Mumbai specifically should be proud to speak in Marathi, be proud of their culture, and stop blindly running behind Bollywood. Most of the Mumbai based Maharashtrians speak that disgusting Hinglish which they think is cool. This problem is not to be seen in the rest of Maharashtra, where people are proud to speak Marathi.

So I was wondering if it would be okay to do an online internship as my 2nd internship after finishing my 1st year of law school in my internship break. These are the standards expected and agreed as acceptable by Harvard, Yale, NYU, UCLA, Berkeley, Toronto, Oxford, Cambridge, the London law schools like LSE, King's, UCL, the SOAS and QM, Warwick and loads of other universities around the world. I don't see anybody complaining about them like this. Are you saying Indian higher education should deliberately be of a lower quality than its western counterparts? If so, why?

My suggestion as both, a first gen and a woman, have strong boundaries, be passionate about the actual lawyering pasts of the job, disinterested about everything else at work. there's no dearth of people from good universities etc etc but there's a real dearth of passionate, hard working people. Most just let it be a part of their CV, linkedin etc lol.

Family law, criminal law are far more lucrative fields. I understand you want to join some firm but since you are willing to start from bottom, I suggest you take these cases. They're easier to get. Generation of business isn't an easy task. Appear pro bono for petty criminals first. Once your name gets in discussion in jail, you will make money

The VC's educational qualifications don't define the university, his administrative capability does. In that way, Sudhir hasn't really separated himself. As for research ethos, there is yet to be any evidence of that. No great research has been forthcoming from NLSIU in the last six years during Sudhir's tenure. However, I don't think that means NLSIU is doing any worse than the other law schools, who haven't really shown any such research either.

NLS hasn’t done anything notable in the past 5 years of Messiah apart from increasing the batch size and introducing new programs to make more money. They don’t even win moots anymore. Honestly, NLUD had far more research publications during the RS era with the same NLS faculty like Mrinal, Aparna and Arup than NLS has done in the past 6 years or so.

Buddy, you will never be in the same position as a NLUD grad after graduating from RML. There’s a certain steely inner confidence that develops by being in an actual tier-1 NLU which even a topper of RML can’t get. And it’ll affect everything from how you work to how people treat you at your workplace. Don’t underestimate the importance of a tag in a country where resources are scarce.

I cannot reveal the firm but therr haven't been down times, especially for Capital Markets folks, since a long time and yes I do feel that the team is not well managed and very understaffed. If your firm is doing good in terms of work hours, can you tell which firm you're from? I presume there shouldn't be an issue since you're saying something positive. Or maybe you can drop a temp mail id where we can connect separately?

The partner probably used his/her quota of personal references to get you in, as otherwise all (s)he could do was refer you to HR. I know it's hard to justify, but you should take to heart that (s)he put weight behind you despite not seeing client / commercial benefit from it.
