i'll be joining a t1 nlu coming AY, and had a question: is it alright if i don't use my legal name in law school/on professional platforms?

i borderline loathe my legal name, and i have various reasons for it. recently decided that i would not use my legal name anywhere except important documents/ids, and stick to a name i chose for myself. keep in mind that i have no intention of legally changing it, not only because the process is extremely complicated, but also because my family is very much against it; i can't even if i wanted to, so i decided to find a way out by having "two names" (the legal one, and the one i prefer). now my concern is if it'll be alright for me to use this picked up name professionally (on cv, resume, linkedin, internship certificates). i've already started introducing myself to my batchmates w this name, so there's no problem there, but i don't know if there will be any identity mishaps if i use this name for my internships.

any help/advice/solution (?) would be greatly appreciated lol

Can confirm this. I am both shy and disabled (totally blind). Many people who know me now say that they "wouldn't be able to detect" I am or ever was shy but it is still something I struggle with. Mind, I am often accused of lying since I have played the piano at large concerts, so people think I must be joking about shyness. But it can be overcome or at least controlled. For me, the way I do it is that if I know I have something of substance to say, I go up to someone and say it. I know my limitations. As a result of virtually no childhood friendships either at school or in my neighbourhood or any other setting, I am horrible at smalltalk (just can't do it). So I don't. I also know that, in in person large social gatherings, I'd rather get some help from someone I know being introduced to somebody else, rather than fumbling and trying myself when it may seem like I am talking to the wrong person. So expose yourself, see where your problems are, reflect on those and fix them (getting ideas from other trusted people where and when you can!). Not too different from academic strategies for exams (fundamentally), you see?

One of my best friends is very confident in social situations involving one or two people and is a genuine fountain of wisdom and kindness. But put her in a larger setting with more people and she becomes uneasy and withdrawn, with her efforts at attempting to hide/mask her shyness sometimes coming across as rudeness or snobbishness. But she is truely one of the nicest and most smart people I know, has worked successfully for six years in a law firm and is now moving in-house not because of any social difficulty but because her move to the unnamed company she will work for moves her closer to a sector she has been interested in since childhood.

In my experience, 7 out of 10 people who call themselves introvert are just plain dumb. Your lack of knowledge on basic topics (politics, sports, etc.), which disables a meaningful interaction, does not makes you an introvert.

Bear in mind, there's a difference between introvert and shy. Introverts can make it in law easily, yes. Shy? Difficult. You'll have to push yourself out of it. And I mean this in the nicest sense possible. I was a very shy kid in school, and had a difficult time having normal social interactions.

I am in a serious dilemma at the moment. All my school life I had been a topper and great in extracurricular activities. I was training in ▮▮▮ dance so in grade 10 my parents gave me the option of either pursuing a career in dance or academics. Being the topper, I chose academics. I got 99.▮▮▮ in class 10 and chose humanities because I did not like physics or math. I really wanted to be a doctor but saw no point studying physics for 2 years. So I chose humanities and prepared for clat for 6 months and got a decent rank in first attempt. Finally, I am in a tier 2 NLU and am utterly confused because I had never contemplated myself studying law and being a lawyer. Being extremely studious right from the beginning, my social skills are average and I can’t really give witty and eloquent answers in front of the Judge in moot court competitions. I work very hard, am among the top 5 students at college but I can’t seem to love participating in any law-related activities. I feel like I’m in an arranged marriage with my degree of law. All my life I have always pursued what I have genuinely loved and mostly excelled. Here, I need to put in that extra effort because honestly I don’t know if I’m really made for law. Sometimes, I feel like I took the wrong decision by opting for humanities in grade 11. Since grade 7-8 I aspired to be an IAS so should I start with my IAS prep, considering I love studying about polity and current affairs (one of the reasons of liking clat prep). I am in my 2nd year. Should I focus on moots and ADR that I don’t enjoy doing, or directly start with UPSC prep?

As a law student on the peak of graduating and entering the workforce, I'm wondering what it's like to be a woman in the workforce in 2025? Can women have it all or are the traditional stereotypes still underway i.e. can a woman be successful only if she puts family/children (if that's something she wants), on the back burner? even during my internships I struggled to find female role models who had achieved their success without having to sacrifice these things. What is it really like on the ground level and what can I expect?

I came in Mumbai 3 years ago with a salary of 14 lpa. Enjoyed my time (whatever I got) without any cash crunch. Kids don't get it 100000s still a great amount to start off anywhere. My dad who was a grade B govt employee had us raised with a household salary of 12-15 lpa in a tier 2 city (govt perks included yes) - but stop cribbing. Unless you got married off in 4th year and your spouse is a dependent you need not worry. Itna time hi nahi rahega tere pass to shed the mint.

In Delhi, it is only the pollution and weather (except the winter months) that sucks. In all other aspects, including people, Delhi is a far better city than both Bangalore and Bombay, especially Bombay. The "know it all" arrogant Bombay attitude combined with the tendency to look down upon others who are considered not posh enough is sickening. Bombay is extremely classist and racist.

True. There is so much scope for growth in these two cities, especially Hyderabad. Given that Tatva doesn't have a great work culture (hire and fire at will), and other firms don't have much big ticket work, Hyderabad is a market ripe for those with the right work ethic and culture.

Update your socials and let people know what's going to happen. Use your student body page on various social media and share it because this is needed. People outside of this circle have to know, especially those who are planning to join. Bring back the dead accounts and make it work in your favour.

There is a comment above, to be fair, saying that they plan to conduct a protest. I think, also, that the keyboard rage has its place too. A reasonably (among the Indian legal community) well-read (if not a very reputable) gossip blog is a good platform to let people from other unis or practitioners know what is going on, which is also a valuable thing to be doing - trashing the reputation of their administration. True, that can be more effectively done by a massive protest which the news might cover, but let us not be so harsh on the students.

If you can't protest, go on non-cooperation, attend classes but don't show up in any event. Flower show is this weekend, don't show your faces there, even members from organising committee should not go there. This is the very least you guys can do. And if you can't do this, don't even think of a protest, because that would be a recipe for disaster.

What databases do y'all use to do research? I used google scholar and hein rn in my first sem but they have a lot of bad literature which i was called out on for citing in my vivas

JSTOR has quality literature but not that much law stuff (what what there is usually is related to public law)

Our college does not have access to OUP/Bril/TandF

That is nothing to be proud of dude. Idk but I think this law firm culture wherein juniors are paid in lakhs and not pocket money like litigation is the reason many middle class 1st generation students even aspire to study law. If top NLUs did not offer 15 lakh package job, I would not have done law at all. The senior counsels who take home all the money, pay literally pocket change to their freshers. It just maintains nepotism. Law firms with all their limitations, atleast places a non nepo kid at better footing. Btw I think this is mostly an Indian thing. I had friends from Germany who said they can venture into litigation chambers just like corporate law firms. Both pay equally well and are open to first gen lawyers.

Beta, u seem to be quite clueless. For a Sr Adv to make even 1 cr a month, he has to charge minimum 5 L per appearance and he must appear on every single court working day per mnth. How many Sr Advs do you know who have such a practice? Dr Singhvi, Mr Sibal etc are not the norm - they are exceptions because they are genius. In the entire country, there won’t he more than 100 Sr Advocates who make over 10 cr per yr. Sorry to burst your bubble beta :)

I'm currently a 3rd-year student of a middle-tier NLU and confused about whether I should opt for corporate or judiciary. With almost every factor, it is clear that I want to pursue judiciary, except for the aspect of money.

I always think that law firm life is challenging in the initial years, but by the end of 10 years, I'll make ₹1-3 crore per year. With the judiciary, this amount can be touched, maybe through corruption (does it happen?).

So, my questions:

1. 1. Do law firm partners make such an amount, and can an ordinary person with zero legal background achieve it?
2. If they make, is it the money after the deduction done by paying the expenses of firm.
2. 3. If yes, how many years would it take if I join a Tier 2/3/Boutique firm after graduation as an associate?
3. 4. Comparison with Judiciary: The corruption part.
4. 5. The factors behind making that ₹1 crore, and how much of it is saved compared to the judiciary, considering that after 10 years, the post will likely be CJM (in our state, promotions happen fast).

I am sure people here are tired of such rants but finding a good internship without connections especially without being in a T1 is so fucking hard. Everyday I mail the firms and none of this shit works whether it's a cold email to the partners or to the HR, I know my application isn't even being opened. I graduate in 2026 and don't know how will I ever get a job like this

Most UK unis do ask for a CV as part of their application processes, so it would be hard to paper it over and any attempt to do so could actually lead to more headache than is required. But I'd imagine they'd go into questions of school grades a lot less than if they were looking at the same numbers for undergraduate admissions (in other words, as long as a CV is complete, I suppose they wouldn't care all that much about equivalences to their own system etc). But considering that Indian students going there for undergrad itself is a pretty not strange concept anymore, they will have a rough idea anyway without needing to go into the small details of exact equivalences of what some grade means. That said, however, I think any slightly sour taste left in their mouth because of potential issues with the school grades could be taken care of by very good law school grades, maybe followed by some average to above average work experience.

However, selection for training contracts in foreign law firms is completely another matter. While per my understanding some law firms are stopping this practice, many do still ask for school grades and are picky about that.
