Purchasing power remains the same for poor people and rich people alike in the same country. Bread costs the same and cars cost the same to both poor and rich. except if you cannot afford bread you starve and if you cannot afford cars you uber. The median income is 30K a month. Only 3% of Indians make a lakh a month or more. To argue that those in the top 3% are middle class is nonsensical. Middle class needs to have a coherent meaning. Just because you cannot afford a lux Insta-worthy life in Bombay doesn't mean people don't live in chains and slums and 1 bhk in faraway parts of the city with their entire family. Get real. Class isnt defined by how you feel. Its not an identity for you to claim. Its a condition caused by the presence or absence of wealth. Someone who earns more than the median income in India, around 33 thousand ruppees is definitionally middle class, those who earn less are the under class. Anyone who earns in 6 digits per month has to definitially be upper class- only 3% of India makes that much. Upperclass doesnt mean extremely wealthy. The presence of extreme wealth and inequality in society does not mean you become middle class. Your feelings are your problems

So I agree with you but lately I’ve also started seeing the other perspective — the really poor of India are so far outside our lived experience (circumstantially and also by our own wilful ignoring of them). So much so that in our (say a middle class person’s) construct of what ‘society’ is in terms of who we deal with interact with and compare ourselves to, an earning of even 40-80 lakhs doesn’t make you feel rich in any way.

As a person born and brought up in Mumbai, I can vouch for this. 1cr per year really doesn't amount to much, even if you don't have over the top expenses, and have your own house in an okay-ish place. By 'okay-ish' I mean a place where your pincode is "Mumbai- 400_ _ _". This city is EXPENSIVE.

While the base of comparison is not exactly the same, I think this is an argument still worth thinking about. There was a bit of a row in Britain a while back when the then Chancellor of the Exchequer (finance minister in other countries) said that earning 100,000 Pounds a year was not that substantial a salary. While obviously economic circumstances are different in India, I think the principle of his mentality translates well. It's just that the numbers (i.e., what number is equivalent in India (what is not so substantial a salary) to 100,000 Pounds) will be different, because obviously anyone saying that the equivalent of 100,000 Pounds in INR is not substantial is kidding or trolling. Jeremy Hunt had, however, a point which is equally applicable to India (very basic economics, no need to have studied it at all to understand its correctness). The value of money now compared to previous times has gone down, meaning that the higher the value of what is in our pockets, the better. In my view, the situation is such that the number quoted by that article just might be correct for cities such as Mumbai. If you think not, please produce rational arguments for why not. The fact that there are many people who, because of unfair circumstances, aren't able to earn that much money (but have the potential (cleverness, nature of work etc)) is another issue altogether, and shouldn't be confused with the question of how much you need to earn in order to live a comfortable life.

And FYI, I don't wait with these things, I'm just a bit slow at them, meaning I make better progress (especially if the topics are more difficult) when there are fewer classes (just how my brain works, so I had all the research done beforehand, but the writing takes a while for me somehow, even though received wisdom indicates that that once you have read and understood, 60% of the battle is won). SLEEP. Nothing is as critical to memory as sleep. Avoid Alcohol and Cannabis as sleep aids. In fact, try and avoid sleep aids at all. Memory is made during REM Sleep. These intoxicants/supplements don't allow you to have REM Sleep. If you need to force yourself to reset yourself, keep yourself up for 48 hours and then fall asleep without aid. But nothing is more important than sleep when it comes to short term memory. I had this problem and I recovered after I fixed my sleep. Now my memory is back to its razor sharp usual self.

I think I have cannabis induced dementia. I have used (abused) cannabis over the course of last two years in law school, I am just 24, I can't recall half of the things I read after certain period, something which I did not have before cannabis use. I also have had OCD, Anxiety and depression treatment going on. I am not certain about the cause but this is kind of frustrating now as I realise more about this issue everyday. Can someone here who relates please suggest what to do. Or if you faced the same and how much time it took to recover, any type of activities which I can engage in (mental or physical), I am already into sports.

I am in my final year from a T2/T3 NLU. I have no hopes of getting placed through college because my grades are more for the worse than better. I managed to get a T1 assessment internship after graduation but if don't manage to get hired I'll end up unemployed. I have very poor soft skills but I can put my head down and work hard. Please give me some tips (especially on how to interact with my team etc.) to ensure that I get hired here.

My friend is 3-4 months into their job at a mid-sized corp law firm and feel like majority of their work ends up redundant/not useful and others need to spend time redoing it. Suhail does not even have the biggest book in ELP....The trade team is 20 people which is co-headed by him and Sanjay. The M&A, PE and Corp team he heads is <10 people at last count, with no headline trxn in 3+ years. Rohit and Nishant - who inherited Rohan's book - are the largest billers in ELP. Nishant - who inherited Vikram's book - is the next highest biller. The size of team (number of people) and then market position of team (rev/lawyer) determine book. Also unlike most MPs Suhail does not command a cut of everyone's book, as ELP is not his baby / he has no claim to the brand equity.

AS in Bom HC works very differently compared to OS. Seniors pay but very minimal but nothing compared to T1 firms or some SC counsels. Earning is easier as the Senior would toss over some work to you - as most lawyers on AS have high volume of work - not necessarily high paying clients. It's just the nature of practice.

Seniors on the OS on other hand doesnt pay. You are expected to follow him/her around initially and wait for the magical day when either he recommends you to a solicitor firm or his solicitor chooses to brief you.

The laws which you practice is also very different on both sides
