NAAC has two NLU VCs (serving and retired) in its 5-member team that landed today. Recently NLU Assam had its NAAC done and NUJS is unlikely to get a grade below that. So A is certain. NKC isn't nervous about NAAC. He doesn't want bad press etc during the visit, which can be weaponised during the EC meeting in December. He is certainly getting an extension although he would preferred the age cap to go. Next best thing - get enough time and opportunity from EC to instal a plaint/friendly successor and get re-appointed as a Chair Prof and grace the EC. Also conduct another round of recruitment and construction deals in the interim.

Sigh. All social science/ theory courses are not freebies. But universities should do more quality control. Nonsense and fluff gets taught at universities today. Last term at nls had two different courses on trans stuff. Most womens rights courses are not created to grapple with the real difficulties and conflicts in feminist discourse. Even the caste studies courses that are taught now - you really aren’t exposed to conflicting ideas even within the community. Let alone be exposed to good research on caste. It’s done so badly it’s not even effective as indoctrination. And it’s actually a disservice to these communities that the profs claim to serve.

It is worthwhile to read humanists and social scientists curiously and rigorously- but many courses offered as such do not meet that standard.

I was interested in public law and society and theory courses myself when I was in college. While some of those courses made me a much better lawyer and thinker and person, many should never have been offered. Especially vanity courses by pseudo academics who really only want to talk about their lives and build a fanclub in classes instead of seriously engaging with difficult material.

I also think this is true for many courses offered in private law. You do not need an entire four credit course to study one chapter of the companies act. That’s just a scam course.

Law and economics courses also do a very poor job of actually imparting skills- you can pass through most law and ec without a basic understanding of differences between debt and deficit and gdp and per capita income, or really even understanding public policy decisions that try to manipulate supply or demand. and certainly without knowing anything about actually “doing” economics. I would actually wager most law students wouldn’t know how to read a scatter plot, evaluate p values or samples. Statistical illiteracy means you really won’t be able to make sense of most law and economics research and will just take any study at face value.

The truncated 5 year programme makes it very hard to learn any BA courses properly - including economics.

Your problem isn’t really that there are too easy courses in certain areas. Your problem is that there is a serious lack of rigor across the board in Indian academia.

Yes! It appears to be a good plan. You may consider keeping yourself updated with other legal issues that are more frequent in your home high court. As, as an APP you will have a decent exposure to criminal trial and thus, it will come handy while arguing criminal appeals in the HC but this will happen only if your HC is hearing appeals. In most HCs hearing of appeals is a distant dream. And, for this reason, keep yourself updated with everything that is "happening" in the HC in additional to criminal jurisdiction. Invest these 10 years in developing a reputation in the district bar. That will be your feeder.
