There is a world of difference between school and university education. Most of the failure in first year comesfrom the inability of students (who are often quite young and lack guidance) to comprehend this difference.

Firts year students are often carried away by the freedom they have while liveinng on their own. They forget that discipline is also needed to be able to work in such circumstances. In school your parents and teachers would pull you up when you were slacking. In no university anywhere will anyone do that for you.

Please. Its just not true that students are working hard in a disciplined way and still failing to get reasonable accomodations. If your illness is debilitating you should either be hospitalised or take a term off and get well and come back to university ready to attack. Its a university its not a hospital.

I dont think NLS students are machines. I think nls students are just as capable as students at the best universities in the world and they can handle the work load that you lot are asked to handle. Once you're done with that, really sit down and figure out what is it that you want to do. Do you want to go into government services or a firm or maybe litigation? Or are you doing that because your relatives are in field/ someone forced it down your throat, while constantly telling you "you'll make a crore a year at some point?"

If the field is truly what you want, and you want to ACTUALLY be a lawyer, start applying to chambers maybe. Start there. A lot of people start at litigation and make their way upwards (either there, or branch out).

If this is not the field, and you wanted to do something else, and maybe have a portfolio, start applying in that field. A lot of people who I know (including me) did that. Not only after the initial slogging my ass off am I making money but I actually like my life.

This is, in no way, a propaganda for you to leave the career. But honestly, if you're feeling that low, it's time for some introspection. Also, it feels bad now (trust me I know), that everyone around you is super successful and all that, but c'mon, the more you compare, the worse you're gonna feel. And it's a tough world out here, which has no time for you to wallow in your self-pity.

I generally use Zotero and Juris-M for my footnoting and Bibliography needs, however recently I came across a unique situation where the citation style required was ILI (Indian Law Institute), this was not available, in the CSL (Citation Style Language) Repository from where these software take up the style.

I have taken upon myself to contribute to the CSL database, various Indian legal citation styles. I'm currently looking out for which Legal Institutes and Organisations in India have come up with a citation styles. If you guys have any other styles, and could link the original styles sheets of these citation standards, would be really helpful. It is going to be a long project, lots of trial and error, but I do hope to finish it within 6 months, hoping for a positive response from you guys.

I am currently in a small mumbai based law firm, and I don't quite like it here. I would like to move to a better firm (better means salary bump, plus high quality work). How do I go ahead from here? Would a direct jump to a T1 make sense? Or do I take the slow route going to marginally better firms and ending up in a T1, albeit with a delay?

Will be very difficult. I was once in a Tier-1 too (GC)- wanted to shift to Disputes but no Tier 1 was interested (and even if they were- they would have discounted my GC experience completely). I understood the difficulty early on and took a chamber job in New Delhi where I could learn the ropes. The salary was shit- but atleast I learned very quickly and got good court exposure. One year later, I switched to a disputes firm (not Tier 1) and very happy. Can say that leaving GC and Tier 1 was the best decision I have ever made.

IMHO, team switch to disputes can only happen if you know someone very closely at a senior level. Otherwise firms will be very reluctant to take you. Disputes scene in Delhi is very jugaad based- and I didn’t have one. My suggestion is, join a good chamber and improve your CV. The salary cut will feel horrible (I was earning 5x amount of money in Tier 1 monthly)- but you will get over it.

If u are from tier 1 nlu and you are confident that you will get callbacks from 1-1 month internships and they will subsequently convert into PPO, then go ahead. Otherwise, the safest approach is to always do long term internships so that upon gradution, your chanes of being hired, either by the current firm or any other firm increases substantially.
