you're remotely right but its not that deep lol if someones finding it difficult they will quit by the first year, and there will be transfers over from other colleges. really can't compare an NLU to GLC. I know a couple seniors in the college and they're pretty helpful and are very well read. this is the same "[X] college has fallen" rhetoric that keeps popping up every couple days on LI. Only thing I do agree on is that the CET shouldnt be bilingual and language requirements must be according to the course-medium. it just helps everyone out. if anything your brother is only at a massive advantage because he will be in the upper ranks of our class. GLC gets great placements from what I have seen for those that are academically at the top of their class.

A couple of days ago, accompanied my lil bro for the admission process. Aside from the sub-saharan infrastructure at GLC, the thing that surprised me most is how horrific the new batch is. One girl asked if they will have the BNS (new Penal code) in their syllabus. Seriously, asked if the new goddamn Penal Code will be in the syllabus. FOR LAW. Not making this shit up.

Another kid showed up to the college asking if they issue a domicile certificate. Then after arguing with the officials for fifteen minutes he realised he wanted a bona fide certificate, not a domicile.

A lot of these kids also had very substandard English skills. Let's get this straight, that's not a bad thing. But they have gotten seats in an English medium law course, and IIRC, legal language and literature are subjects in the first year.

These kids were set up for doom by the state government, not keeping separate Marathi and English CETs for Law. These kids who might be very articulate in Marathi are being set up for disappointment in an advanced English-medium course. Some of these kids are from under the 70th percentile, which creates an even larger disparity in grades as well as social life.

I mean, there has to be a limit, to how long they can milk the fading brand value they hold, right?
Why is there an option for a Marathi entrance test to an English-medium course anyway? Especially one where a good foothold over English is of paramount importance.

Call NLUs classist or whatever, but they cracked the code to having a competitive student intake without insane disparities when it comes to subjects like literature or legal language or whatever the hell they have there. My brother, who comes from a family educated in English for 4 generations will obviously have an insanely huge advantage over a third of the class that had most of their education in Marathi or even Hindi for that matter.

I don't know whether to be mad at the MH Education Board, or feel sympathetic for a lot of these students. Or both.

I really hope she focuses on LA 2028 and does not get distracted, because she will now be flooded with modelling offers from brands, TV show offers, Bollywood movie roles etc. Case in point is the boxer Vijender Singh. Won a silver, then went downhill as he spent more time on fashion and glamour.

Although you are right when you say that non-left views should be aired to fight back against NLUs turning into JNU, let's also be pragmatic. You will be cancelled by your peers if you identify as non-left. That can be very upsetting for an 18 year old, in age where they are already vulnerable because of social media and peer pressure. Kids that age are also very cruel -- they can bully you in ways like not inviting you to hang out with them, not having meals with you in the mess etc.

So my advice would be to just keep quiet if you are non-left and avoid political discussions. Your political views can be exercised in the ballot box and in circles outside campus.

Also, let's remember that most NLU students swing to the right once they graduate and enter the real world --or at least the centre-left. So just have patience!

Limited Internships atleast in the first two years. Do good ones in smaller law firms, they'll take you if you're not from Tier 1. Focus on Reading and Writing, irrespective of your schooling background, reading and writing is different here. Develop a habit. Wherever you end up, unfortunately you would need to read the 200 pahe judgement. So be able to read it. Don't be caught up in political views/debates, they're all fucked up. But be aware about the developments. (A weekly habit of catching up on legal/non-legal habits). Baaki Passing in NLU is easy imo.

Social life as you wish to have.

Advice from a senior:

1. Cultivate a habit of writing. Start with blogs, then once you gain confidence write for journals. Show your work to teachers and take their suggestions.

2. Study hard. Your grades matter.

3. Play a sport on weekends. If you are not very strong physically, you can consider shooting or archery at your nearest SAI facility. Even chess for that matter.

4. Avoid social media. Especially discussions where people mock lower-ranked NLUs (including on LI).

5. If your political views are non-left, then just keep quiet and avoid taking about politics, else you will be ostracised by the woke lobby. And if your political views are indeed left, then don't make your life all about politics. Instead of spending 2 hours protesting for Palestine, read a book or do yoga.

6. Avoid toxic people.

7. Try to date nice girls/guys, not mean girls/guys. Personality is more important than looks.

I had interned there previously. They have a good growing commercial Disputes practice. When I was interning there, it was a small team with one SA and 2 associates. Rest of the team is based out of Mumbai. I noticed that they are looking to hire aggressively. I was interning in the team that had matters in DRT, NCLT and Madras High court. The Chennai team, particular the Senior Associate was very helpful and nice to work with. He used to take time to explain the research proposition to the interns and took time to address our queries and review our work. Overall the work and office environment is silent most of the time as the SA is serious on his work, but he environment was always friendly and not toxic

The thing that this gets wrong is the assumption about the selected candidate’s undergraduate institution. It has become so commercial law-focussed in the last few years, from my observations, that there is almost no chance the individual in question would have been able to study modules on the topics in question. I myself looked at their "Transnational Law" LLM pathway, which is intended for human rights people, and frankly the offerings (or at least the ones I saw last year) were a joke! Certain academics I know--criminologists there—left on mass in 2014 because of how little importance was being given to their research, demonstration enough, I think, of what direction that particular law school is taking.

In a similar boat. I graduated from a T1 NLU/did an Ivy League masters. Now I'm getting down to preparing for this exam. There seems to be 2-3 top tier law school grads cracking the exam these days (in some top service or the other - IAS/IPS/IRS/IFS). So it seems possible. But there is certainly a dearth of material, that is for sure. There isn't even one reputable coaching institution, nor is any good content available online.

Not sure if Advait or the FAMILY reads LI comments (unlikely).

Pune will always remain Pune and can never be the next any town, be it Bangalore or Hyderabad. The difference is in the mindset of people/Punekars. They are just unwilling to pay! Moreover, they are not bothered about the quality they are getting at present from the local law firms (it's pathetic!) and hence, no willingness to switch to T1s. Having worked closely with a Pune T1, I had realized that the cost requirement is so damn low that no T1 can survive or even consider a separate SoC. Having said this, what might change the game is hiring local talent, which would be pretty economic and can fit in the (substantially) reduced/negotiated SoC. Another concern that I realized is the requirement of a "local touch" while discussing with local companies in Pune. Honestly, they want someone who can speak Marathi, which clearly means hiring a local talent. Unlike Pune, Bangalore is different as majority of the IT companies / people are outsiders and are willing to pay for a quality work. As of now, most of the T1s are majorly catering to Real Estate practice, with a bit of Corporate practice thanks to MNCs. Having spoken to several startups in Pune, it was clear that they would never migrate to a T1 for any service as the price point was "way too high" and "unusual". God bless Pune!

I work at a mid-size boutique law firm. My Partner is like a child, nitpicking on the smallest thing and always looking for someone to blame (which is often me, being the junior most person in his team). He can make mistakes but no one else. He will make you feel bad about it, sit you down, and interrogate you like a cop. The interrogation feels like a humiliation ritual at this point because there is really no learning in this process. He just yells, questions why I did a certain thing in a certain way (without guiding me to the right way) and makes personal remarks ("Start thinking, I know it hurts but try..."). It's getting so ridiculous that it causes me great anxiety. I'm looking for a new job, but in the meantime - I'm thinking for next time he does this I will ask him if I can be frank and tell him that his method of interrogation vs teaching (I'm new at the job) is not helping.
