Anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare has eaten again. It was the climax of the single biggest news story of the year that pushed other headlines off the frontpages for weeks. Although ostensibly a legal question the average lawyer tried to go about his or her business.
One senior advocate while on his way to argue before a tribunal found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time and was detained for two hours by the Delhi police last week who alleged that he was an Anna Hazare supporter out to cause trouble. The tribunal did not get much work done for the rest of the day.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on the other hand has been remarkably efficient with its new M&A-overseeing mandate, clearing the complex Disney-UTV takeover in less than a month. Hot on the heels of its record fine against DLF this may only be its second M&A case but the Commission still has the opportunity to become an efficient regulator rather than one that will be dragged through Hazare’s Lokpal and the pendency morass.
But more than Hazare’s fast the real new independence struggle is going on in our courts, according to Court Witness’ Supreme Court postcard that describes the yearnings and failures of young advocates who want their own practice rather than serving a senior for life.
Independence takes hard work but has been worth it for start-up Chennai Law Associates that has now broken even 17 months after first opening its doors and is now targeting new commercial ventures and verticals.
Many law schools’ students have long been struggling for autonomy from their college authorities, while seeking support at the same time. In few places is this initiative more evident than in mooting. Team MPL has analysed the internal mooting processes of the top 10 law schools with more statistics than you can shake a gavel at, plus a preview of the third season of the Mooting Premier League (MPL).
