The BCL has always been superior to the Cambridge LLM, but in the last few years, the Cambridge LLM has become an utter joke. I have been in Cambridge long enough to see the quality of students deplete by the year. You will find a nice cross-section of Indian law students that stops short of only Meerut Law College. There are people here who were not even in the top 10 of their undergrad cohorts, whereas at Oxford exceeding the top 3 is a rarity. It is quite fun though--more time to party, and academic rigour is optional, that is, you can exercise the option of not working and getting the degree or working and getting nothing in particular to make you stand apart from your two-hundred-strong batch. At any rate, if you did not get into Oxford this year, chances are that you never will, so welcome to mediocrity at Cambridge!

Leaving aside internal firm policies, please do NOT. This is just a suggestion but man marriages that have lasted 20 years have broken off. You can't tell how life will be like if it does not work out and you two will have to work together. I know its hard to set boundaries with colleagues when you spend like 12 hours a day with them but try elsewhere (anywhere but your own office, especially your own team). Besides, there is so much else that could go wrong. For example, private information you give them can be used against you. Stay clear, do your job and leave.

Who is contesting this and on what ground? Placements have been worse and that's a fact. The pool has increased by 5 times. The offers haven't. Other NLU students get to intern in the middle of the semester, NLS students don't. Sudhir has been known to push for 3 year LLB students over 5 year students, leading to deterioration of relationships between the students of these two programmes. These have all been reported time and again on LI itself. The mod probably doesn't read the pieces themselves.

I am from a minority group and attend an elite university. I can tell you, from my experience and those of loads of others whom I know who are minorities as well, that it is nowhere close to 95% reformed. Please do not spread ill-informed opinions as though they were gospal, because the only part of your statement which is correct is that the entire world was less inclusive at one point.

Because a certain section of the society wants to be beneficiaries of legitimized discrimination (aka reservation) in view of some vague, unscientific, woke, abstract concepts such as "historical injustice", for perpetuity. Asking them to compete on merits would be violative of "social justice".

This should have happened long ago and yet nothing will change. There should be a cap on reservation hierarchy. People who's grandparents, then parents are civil servants are taking reservation. I mean come on now ! You've had two successive generations in the highest bureaucratic post in India and still you are taking reservation from the one who's a first gen. I truly believe, preference reservation should be given, especially in government jobs. So if you're a first gen, you should get the first dibs in reservation, then second gen and then third. After which reservation should not be given. Isn't this almost similar to a monarchy where the third generation is still benefiting when they've been ruling for two generations. Especially in Group A services ?

I absolutely agree. Ten years ago one of my batchmates became an assistant professor without even NET. He did a masters from an NLU and got the job. He said there were barely 10 candidates and he was the only one with a LLM from an NLU (tier 2). Today I have a PHD+JRF from a tier 1 NLU and I still haven't gotten a call back. Could you imagine !!

He went straight to teaching with just an LLM. I went through net,then JRF, then PhD and now I don't have anything to show for and he already has a 8-9 year long career. This is utter BS!!!

The Indian Tier 1s are a bubble, and the math has never been honest. Roughly 700 lawyers per firm funnel into 150 to 200 PA slots, all waiting for partnership letters that will arrive for maybe one in fifteen of them. Firms over hire to handle deal flow that may not recur, then thin the pyramid quietly when it doesn’t. The deeper problem is what the structure produces. You spend a decade learning to service relationships you did not originate, on matters routed to you by partners whose business cards still carry the firm’s logo and not yours. You learn execution, which is real. You do not learn the thing that actually keeps a lawyer employed past forty: how to make a client pick up the phone and call you, specifically. Book building is a discipline, not a personality trait. It requires years in rooms where you have no standing, building peer relationships with people who are not yet GCs and not yet founders. It requires you to write things, lose things, and be visible in ways the firm hierarchy quietly punishes. The Tier 1 model was not built for this. It was built to extract maximum leverage from the pyramid while the going is good. Job security in this market is portable business. Everything else is the firm’s security, not yours. The senior associate with two captive clients of her own has more leverage than the salaried partner with none. The lateral market knows this. The pyramid does too, eventually.

As a 2nd year law student from a private uni at Bangalore, you should first look for internships at chambers rather than directly jumping into law firms with gen corp or disputes practice. After one lit internship, target boutique law firms in gen corp, few firms like almt, md&t to start with and then scale up and mail other t2's and T1's in Bangalore. This would be the ideal way to have a strong resume by your final year.

But it's extremely difficult to get a PPO or job offer from their Calcutta office. The partners have high expectations and justifiably so, because the team is lean and the work is sophisticated. So if your aim is to get a PPO, it is recommended to intern in their Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore offices where its rolled out quite easily.

Yes, ALL law firms shortlist candidates based on the batch rank. so yes your CGPA only matters, nothing else. Everything else is a point of discussion in the interview, but theres nothing a top 5 rank could not replace for a successful offer. So yes, keep grades super high and know to speak proper english and be super creepy to the interviewer

just completed my second year. done 3 separate tax internship, one with AOR at delhi hc, two adv, one from delhi hc, and one at bombay hc. i want to intern with a firm after classes to build more experience. i have completed my second year and will be moving to thrid year.

my classmates and I for a given subject, generally recieve scores that fall within a certain range that's wide but not too wide. we chalked it upto "same professor is checking the papers for the whole class which is why everyone has similar scores". similar as in, almost all of us would do (relatively) well (given our respective abilities) in the same subject and really bad in another subject according to the scores (yes I've considered that this could also be attributed to some subjects just being difficult or quite easy but) i suspect we're being graded on a curve. no professor in our college has ever said so nor does the college book that explains all the rules and formalities and whatnot. but professors are weirdly cryptic about how they grade us. sometimes when we voice our frustrations about the difficulty levels of the finals they are not dismissive but give the impression that our worries are baseless. almost as if to say the whole class is not going to fail even if we do badly (cause we would be graded on a curve!) and only those who don't study at all need to be worried

Hi, I'm currently a fourth year law student in a tier 2 university, I'm interested in research and policy. Litigation or corporate is something I would do only till I once again found a proper policy gig (meaning I have no serious commitments to it). Once I graduate I either want a fellowship or a place anywhere that has a solid policy dept and work for about 3-4 years before I try to go abroad for an LLM to convert that as a criteria to work policy there (most likely the U.K).

(please hold back on the LLM is useless talk, I don't want to be a solicitor or anything like that).

I don't have the credentials for Oxbridge/LSE kinds of universities but say something like Kings College London etc. I'm wondering if this plan is feasible ?. I require no loan of the sort to fund my studies so debt is not a concern, my main concern once I go would be doing everything humanely possible to not come back.

Though if I must, I've realised that policy firms do give preferential treatments to these degrees, so thats a plus for what its worth but one I'm not interested in until I'm absolutely forced to return.

I'm currently spending all my time building a writing portfolio to express interest and competence in my niche (tech law).

I'm here so that people from more experience and seniority, or if luck has it those who paved similar routes can advise me on the feasibility of such a plan.

The new govt should seriously consider roping in former IPS officers, Upen Biswas and Nazrul Islam and such others of similar integrity and experience in its anti corruption crusade. Just putting in big names with overrated performance looks more like playing to the gallery. After all the CBI officers on RGK case were big names but are now being investigated for trying to hush up and mislead the case. I am part of Batch 7. They ran their programmes for 3-4 years for free. My mentor, who worked at a law firm, was not very proactive and responded to me quite late. Since it was a free programme, I didn't complain much. But I was expecting more support from them. Before rebranding, they were mostly free, hence most people were grateful for their experience.
