Try exploring IBC as well IBC and BnF usually go hand in hand at most major firms anyway.

Coming to your point about starting in a commercial bank: in India, there honestly aren’t too many legal banking roles available. If banks like ICICI Bank or HDFC Bank visit your campus, you should definitely aim for them. Otherwise, they usually don’t offer internships outside their campus hiring programs. So practically speaking, it makes more sense to target law firms in India and abroad.

As of now, a good Tier-1 BnF experience can open doors to multiple foreign law firm opportunities later on. So ideally, aim for Tier-1 law firm BnF teams, publish on regulations that directly impact financing and deal-making, and try getting internships with teams like Economic Laws Practice or Dentons they may start considering applications from third year onwards. Once you have those names on your CV, start cold-emailing Tier-1 BnF partners strategically. (custom mails)

Also, build experience through moots, especially in IBC. That combination helps a lot.

You should also start applying for vacation schemes at foreign law firms whenever eligible that can genuinely become a golden ticket.

Overall, just stay extremely aware of what’s happening in the market. Don’t isolate your learning entirely to BnF because the future of the practice area, especially at the junior level, is not fully predictable. And honestly, while BnF is very well paid, it can also get quite boring. Try finding at least one area of law you genuinely enjoy alongside it.

Would tend to agree, to some extent. They clearly have a big budget for PR and astro-turfing on a variety of forums. Though it seems they mostly exist to fill a niche of the ecosystem, which the government is happy to invest money in.

But maybe that is not really the target audience of LI, as forensics isn't really in the 'traditional' field of legal practitioners, so it's a bit off topic. However, there is a lot of off topic being posted, so it is also easy to ignore posts about NSFU.

The last JGLS batch with any academic rigour was the GB of 2023. Yes, he does sit on 26th floor. I interned in that floor. The office here is not the full floor but still pretty large and pretty pretty. As far as Saurya Sir is concerned, I never worked with him but during my internship the yap I heard - very focused on work and client satisfaction, and cordial in behaviour with everybody. But not the buddy buddy type. More mentor than party type. He lets you be as long as you are working well. Apparently notoriously publicity shy about his deals but does an interesting mix of cross border and deals (some big some small) and Advisory. From what I heard, where there is no pressure on bill share on large mandates, does not rationalise, where there is rationalisation required to keep client happy, gives us his and other team member hours both. I'll be going to HNLU and I'm really concerned with regards to the placement scene there. I have heard that since the past few years, AZB has been the only T1 to come to campus. On top of that, including the PPOs and the DayZ placements, the total seems to have stuck at 16-17. Now, I acknowledge that the market can be bad at some times but in a T1 college, I would at least have a good chance with all the T1 firms (CAM and Khaitan don't even come to NLUs below NLIU). Then, the PPO scene - colleges like GNLU end up bagging so many PPOs (like 40). I was under the impression that college tag matters only till internship, then how good of a job you do during that internship, decides your PPO, is that actually the case now? I ask this because in terms of PPOs, GNLU seems to be leaving NLUJ behind so what is happening?

At last, I am thinking that maybe I should give another attempt (would be my third) and keep on trying till I get a T1 college. The first attempt didn't go well due to a surprise analytical reasoning question (2025) which messed up my mental and subsequently, the whole paper. Then, in 2026, a similar mistake happened, which cost me 7 marks and didn't have proper GK coverage (even though I read from two compendiums, facilitated by my own research and another magazine for state exams). Though, the rank inflation also facilitated me getting into HNLU.

P.S. - At least in my second attempt, I had a fire inside me that told me that I couldn't reach my potential due to my brain giving up at that AR question and not turning back on (like when you keep on reading but you don't understand a thing), therefore I still had room to improve before I would hit my ceiling, however the same thing happened (I tried all the methods I could during my preparation - giving mocks with a 10 minutes deficit, when extremely sleepy, with a lot of disturbances, etc., and on the day of the exam - box breathing, doing something else and coming back to it, etc. to no avail).

The world where "everyone speaks with each other in English", if you see, is the world where people have financially lucrative opportunities. You can get on your working class high horse as much (and more) as you like, but that doesn't change the facts. Even in the much praised (only on LI) government sector, this working class high horse goes only so far. Nobody is going to check, for example if you are an agent controller in India's spy service, the RAW, who runs a hypothetical Chinese double agent whom the RAW officer has an arrangement to meet in Geneva from time to time, if that agent controller can speak Tamil or Kannada. What will matter is that the RAW officer can speak the languages that matter to make sure she doesn't stick out in Switzerland, and can interact with that Chinese agent. In my book, the essential languages for such a project would be English and Manderin, the desirable ones would be French or German (because of Switzerland in the hypothetical). Ideally of course, my guy would be able to speak the essential languages and one desired language (though many other criteria would matter). If I saw Tamil, kannada or Hindi in addition to the essential languages I'd dismiss as "superfluous and unhelpful". If I saw them instead of the essentials, that person isn't suitable for my needs. Simples. That's how I'd think if I did that kind of work, which I don't, but you can't argue that there is common sense in it.

In that way, I could question whether you ever were admitted to study law. You can't even respond to an argument, or your post wouldn't have dirty great redaction marks on it. Play the ball for once, not the man, why don't you? Also, as we are talking in these terms: how many ▮▮▮?

The new govt tasked the DMs to start salary recoveries from teaching and non teaching staff who were identified by the SSC and CBI as having got appointments via illegal means. But what's the progress and why isn't the govt ensuring that SSC etc publish the names with relevant details. The recoveries if done right will be substantial. And why aren't these 5000 or so individuals being pursued to name those who took cash for jobs?

If the Centre can pull in paramilitary forces from all over the country for security during and after elections, why can't they bring in additional officers including retd officials for surge support?

I can't find the articles on the web rt now. But I can distinctly recall that The Telegraph (Aveek Sarkar was yet to be ousted) did an entire series and came under heavy TMC and govt fire. It involved an elderly couple in Garia with a large land holding that bordered Adi Ganga or one of its canals. They had a small single or double storied building but kept the rest of the land open for gardening, play area etc. The couple were likely child free and did not disallow local children or others from accessing the free space whenever reqd. But they had access control and no adverse possession had taken place for decades. Likely the couple spent years travelling abroad etc for work but would keep returning home. They had already retired when the TMC took over.

Under the camouflage of access given to locals, a local club fronted TMC egress who built permanent structures including gym and various other facilities. When the old couple protested, threats followed including forceful takeover and eventual eviction from their own house. The couple then took refuge with a relative in Park Street. Eventually then won reprieve from the Cal HC because local police did zilch.

The club with tacit TMC support even contended that the old couple had given them access for their own protection and the takeover was in public interest since the old couple had no children nor could they properly exploit the property to full potential.

The HC ordered Surajit K Purkayastha IPS who was likely the CP then or something senior (later the first state security advisor to Unkind) that he must personally restore the full property to the old couple and demolish all unauthorised structures. But that remained unfulfilled citing local law and order problem including threat of suicide by local men and women who later got unmasked as local Unkind goons.

Two prominent ministers, Partha Chatterjee and Arup Biswas were the ringmasters and used their ministerial position to abuse govt finances to forcefully acquire the land using central funds under Ganga Action Plan. The then KMC mayor (likely the now discarded Sovan Chatterjee) enthusiastically got involved as well. Invoking special powers that property was "acquired" for a measly amount that was declined by the old couple.

This was spun by the wretched Unkind that the old couple did all the drama for money. Except it was later revealed that the old couple had previously desired to donate the land during Red admin if that helped the cause of Adi Ganga rejuvenation. That standing offer had remained with Unkind govt as well.

The Cal HC was exasperated. But judiciary has its share of ahem too. So a certain judicial restraint crept in when the state govt through its venerable AG (not the usual suspect KD) made its intent abundantly clear. The case was allowed to meander in the judicial jungles. Surajit kept getting promotions. And the old couple stayed away knowing that they wouldn't survive the local goons.

I don't know what happened eventually. But the state did acquire the land but it was not used for the pumping project. Maybe it came up eons later. But the gym and club remained.

Why isn't anyone looking into this? After all now we get to hear wonderful details if how Unkind acquired multiple lucrative plots, organised loot via police, KMC and worthies like Sona Pappu. Why is saffron so quiet about shady deals by Merlin Group and other real estate majors of Kolkata? What about the illegal Wow Momo factory fire? Are we getting warm?

So I am from Tier 3 college with very little placement support. Graduated 2 years. Could not convert any assessement internships into a full time role. Seeing my friends getting into top law firms and constant panic from my family I had to join a consulting firm through reference. Little did I know it had nothing to do with law and I was surrounded by CAs and MBA folks. I though maybe if I go to a B-School I can get into top tier consulting. But of course got a reality check when I gave all MBA entrance exams even after preparing for an year.

Now its been almost 1.6 years working in this company. I am not interested in their work. I really want to get back into law now specially in M&A, Gen Corp practice (now that I have a decent knowldge of finance and functioning of a company). So is it even remotely possible to go back in law?

Do people really care about stipends while interning? The stipends offered by law firms are in no way comparable to what is being paid by the tech and consultancy firms. Whether they should is a different conversation. Whatever is offered is not enough to meet your internship expenses, assuming that you've moved to a different city for your internship. Sure you might feel a little valued (as you should) but the most important reason is to secure a job for yourself. Why do people bother so much about the stipend?

Please don't feel down because of some comments made by a stuck up judge. Always remember that you built your own practice through grit and hard work. It is people like you who sustain all that is good in the Bar and pass it onto the new generation of lawyers (while hopefully paying them more than a pittance). Elitist comments like these are not the worth the time of day and should be rightfully treated with contempt and disgust.

Actually I never been in any debates or any such competitions throughout, I feel my nlu would have naturally good speaker who could articulate better than me not that I can speak or have public fear just comparatively. Can i become a good speaker for moot court honestly at this stage and if I can then how can I proceed to learn and practice that, another reason is I am scared as hell what if I mess up or do a blunder?
