I am an A1 in a tier 1 firm private equity general corporate team and I would like to know how much can I realistically make as a in-house counsel over the years till retirement. In tier like mine a newly made partner gets something like 80L-1CR. Assuming you become partner at 33, you have about 30 years of partnership. It is a good chunk of money but obviously comes with a lot of pressure. Minimum you would be making 60-70 crore over all.

I want to switch to a high paying in-house like ITC. How much can I realistically make in ITC or other such companies if I move as at an A2, A3, SA level. Because I have heard home grown inhouse lawyers dont really make into GCs.

I like to live a minimalist life. All I want is that my kids don't have to struggle with competitive exams to get into good colleges and that they can pursue education abroad, something I couldn't and still cant. Other than that I don't see any point in having lot of money with this kind of life.

I am guessing this OP who posted this is some envious Indian NLU kid that went to read for an LLM in something or the other at a British law school who recently got his or her marks, found that their degree classification was merit (despite participating in class with fantastic English speaking skills, thinking they'd impressed the teacher) but found that the seemingly dumb Chinese kid who kept his head down in class but did the work quietly had earned a distinction. I have Internship Interviews with both Trilegal and Khaitan in this month. Please help me on how to navigate this interview. What do they ask in the interview? Will they only give preference to higher ranked people? Do batch ranks matter?

It's not as easy as people make of it. The subject diversity score is only of 5-10 marks at most places. To compete with a GEM, you need to have the same percentile i.e., 99.5+, good marks in your 12th and Grad, and work experience of 24 months. This is primarily what keeps you at the top to even get a call. And then they grill the fuck out of you over quants in the PI.

It's definitely not easier. An engineer from IIT likely outdoes you on most of these parameters, while also being able score better in CAT than you because of the grip they hold over DILR and Quants.

More than the actual so called urgency of tbe client it's also the optics that gives rise to these long hours.

There are firms/chambers where no matter what if you have finished work early or don't have too much work for that day, you're supposed to be in a office till a certain minimum time.

Totally empathise - I hate to see how a lawyer no matter how technically sound can be considered a 'top' lawyer only if he or she is willing to burn the midnight oil (often times not even caused due to emergencies but poor planning either by the lawyer or the client). I've seen mums on my instagram feed boasting about working at family functions and giving their kid '1' hour of time daily and acting as if that's supreme sacrifice. No, you CANNOT be a good lawyer and a great spouse. I know a lawyer friend of mine who has a great relationship with his wife but has good work boundaries, and no he doesn't work in India. But law as a profession is notorious for insane working hours every day.

This is coming for a 2026 batch jindal student who secure a PPO in a Tier 1 law firm - the placements for this year are ABYSMAL. Probably the worst they have ever been, and I say this with responsibility. Only 12 placements in zero day of which, tier 1’s you could count on one hand. Day 1 was also horrendous bringing about only a dozen more offers at 8-9 LPA. Some new RMC has been constituted and prof. Dipika has publicly acknowledged that recruited reputation for Jindal students is at an all time low with some firms like Saraf, JSA etc even refusing to come.

Regardless of your batch rank, you simply can no longer rely on Jindal for your placements. The horrible and arbitrary marking and grade inflation, students quite literally lying on their CV and tanking interviews being unable to answer even basic wuesyions

These advocates enjoy tax benefits that the common man does not. They bill lakhs per client and enjoy in their posh South Delhi residences. They should feel free to take up such cases not just for Rohingyas but all displaced individuals in our country which most of these senior advocates, barring eminent humanitarian advocates like Colin Gonsalves, will not. Preaching about this is all well and good in theory but are they even aware about the ground reality in states like Assam wherein SC/ST groups are suffering due to these invaders? Even a liberal counsel like Shyam Divan has taken up Assam's case against this menace, which should tell you something about whether these Rohingyas deserve to swarm in by the thousands and enjoy the benefits of regular taxpayers.

It may be recalled that on December 2, sharply reacting to a petition filed in relation to Rohingyas, a bench led by CJI Kant askedif there was any order issued by the Government of India declaring Rohingyas as 'refugees'.

"Where is the order of the Government of India declaring them (Rohingyas) as refugees? Refugee is a well defined legal term and there is a prescribed authority by the Government to declare them. If there is no legal status of a refugee, and somebody is an intruder, and he enters illegally, do we have an obligation to keep that fellow here?" remarked the CJI.

Taking objection these remarks, particularly the equation of Rohingya refugees to “illegal intruders digging tunnels” to enter India, the former judges have written to CJI Kant, stating,

“The remarks from the bench are contrary to core constitutional values. They have had the effect of dehumanizing Rohingya refugees whose equal humanity and equal human rights are protected by the Constitution, our laws and by international law.”

Objection has been taken particularly to the bench's reported statements questioning the legal status of the Rohingya as refugees, equating them with intruders illegally entering India, the references to persons who dig tunnels to enter illegally, the questioning whether such entrants are entitled to food, shelter and education, the invocation of domestic poverty as a reason to deny basic constitutionally guaranteed entitlements to refugees and the suggestion that they be spared third degree measures, in their treatment in India.

Yo, Sooooooo.... Genz vocab of therapy culture in law is wild! FOSHO it’s great for mental health, but ALSO it’s becoming a way for some lawyers to hide incompetence. Mental health is important, but using it as an excuse instead of putting in the work to actually manage stress and build skills is a problem. There’s definitely a balance between self-care and accountability, and lawyers gotta figure out how to take care of their mental health without letting it be a crutch for poor performance.

Been using LI for years and have been incorporating all the good advice. Combining the advice with my workaholic nature and a lot of luck, I'm fortunate enough to make a name for myself in my university and all the former workplaces.

Doing well but I need to know what is to be done in the next 2.5 years in order to secure a good placement offer from a good chamber. The problem I'm facing is that my NLU is a fairly new university and we don't really have any alumni choosing the road not taken (CBSE reference).

I don't want to indulge myself with law firms in general because I'd rather prefer peanuts over compromising my growth as an advocate. (I thank god and my parents for making me able to take this option)

I know it's unrealistic for me to wish to earn a living despite being a first-gen advocate and opting for litigation but there must be some place in Delhi giving fair remuneration.

So far I'm targeting AOR offices (given I liked their work culture) and/or senior advocate chambers where they have their in-house AORs. I want to become an AOR and set up my own chamber 10 years down the line.
