I am a fifth-year law student graduating in June 2025. My experience so far has been heavily focused on trademark prosecution and litigation, having worked with top-tier IP law firms such as Anand & Anand, Remfry & Sagar, and K&S Partners. In addition, I have completed advanced courses including CopyrightX from Harvard and have authored multiple international articles.

However, despite this background, I have yet to see concrete job prospects, which has been unsettling. I am now considering a switch in practice area but am unsure which field would be both highly rewarding and provide solid job opportunities before graduation. I am ready to put in long hours, as long as the work is challenging and well-compensated.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Is the maintenance good? Are the hours restricted? Does everyone get a chance?

I am a final-year law student from Bengaluru. My parents moved here only for my education, and I was always an above-average student. I did my bachelor’s in arts with the sole intention of preparing for civil services, but due to family circumstances, I had to join LL.B. I gave two UPSC attempts with all my effort, but I couldn’t clear them.

Now, I have completely stopped UPSC preparation and am fully focusing on law. Unfortunately, I am from a tier-4 law college with no alumni network in law firms. In the past two years, I have managed to do only three internships, and I am desperately trying to get an assessment internship. I have sent more than 200 emails to law firms, partners, and chambers, but till today I haven’t received a single positive response.

With high expectations from my family, I am under constant pressure, yet I am still struggling to get even one opportunity. What makes it harder is that many of my friends are getting internships by lying on their resumes, while I am left behind. Sometimes it feels like it’s better to remain unemployed for a year than to get caught lying.

Every Sunday, I spend my whole day just mailing firms in hope of a chance. The frustration has been piling up, and I had no one to share this with. Today, I thought this might be the best place to let it out.

Any advice would mean a lot.

I suggest that you study global trade and supply chains at MBA level rather than practice international trade law, which is not at all a viable field for lawyers in India. There is good demand for this subject in international and Indian companies and you might end up in a strategy role as you advance in your career, which would pay really well. Don’t waste your good years on international trade law.

After clearing my interview was asked to work for two years! As an intern. Lol. I asked directly my chances at an offer - was told will think about it. After finding out there is a difference even between the stipend given to NLU and Non NLU kids. Refused to go. Hopefully they find NLU kids willing to intern for 2 years.

A part time PhD is usually for people with an established career. Who have extra time and income to do a PhD. On the other hand people just out of grad school are expected to do a full time PhD. Also, a JRF is always given preference over others not just in phd but in professor recruitment.

PhD across the world is a peanuts paying endeavour. Unless you enter a grant or funded project of the government. This is usually for STEM, very rarely for law. As a fresher with a pg and net will fetch you anything between 23k to 35k per month. JRF is more. Also, after 8 years when you apply for a promotion from assistant to associate professor, a PhD is mandatory. So instead of waiting 8 years, do it now. Moreover, in a few years, because of the competition, PhD may become mandatory from asst prof itself. So better to just get done with it.

A PhD is a final degree, and it's a weird place between student and scholar. You aren't expected to produce a Noble Prize research, but you are supposed to use it as a launch pad for future research work. That is why a PhD is 3 to 6 years. It's upto you in the end.

No real change will happen. These universities will on paper double the number of seats and reserve half. Very few from actually marginalised castes will be able to get in due to financial constraints. So the Reserved seats will largely go vacant and the classes will be similar as before.

I mean this with complete goodness of heart. If despite 4 years in the profession, such questions torment you, please consider if you should still stay in the legal field, let alone litigation. This field is brutal. Your naivety will burn your career or whatever to ashes. You might be academically sound to survive for some years. Can your general personality back you up though?
