This is the difference between our so-called "great universities" and good to mediocre foreign ones - this sarkari culture of sucking the balls of administrators. I had a few years' acquaintance (as a graduate student) with the culture of a prominent university in the English speaking world, having been based at their law school. I once came across the VC in a university cafiteria and the catering staff called him "old ducky" and pretended to scold him for "shoplifting" - telling him, in tones of mock severity, to "pay like everyone else". Student representatives called him by his first name to his face (upon his encouragement) and other students openly said (some in his presence, according to some accounts I heard) that the hashtag #FatCatVC was applicable to him when discussing issues around the pay of faculty in the lower rungs of the academic ladder. Naturally, nobody interacted with him in jogging pants or something, but nobody had this backside-oiling mentality of suits and ties.

And you? You are teaching this kid that sucking the balls of authority figures is how to live life. What an atrocious example to set to people.

PS: For all the trolls and embittered old uncles who infest this platform, this is not some tribute/veneration of a foreign university, society or culture. There was enough shit and nonsense to be going on with in my experience at the foreign uni I attended, and there are aspects of that society and culture which I would fight to keep out of Indian higher education.

Hi, I would be starting my 4th year and have a CGPA of 6.2 out of 10. I am from a Tier-3 NLU. I have good publications in my CV and a couple of moots. I have interned in Tier-2 firms, majorly in dispute resolution and IBC. I have 2 years ahead of me and have a Tier-1 internship lined up in December and a callback from Tier-2 in October. The journey ahead looks difficult with too much competition all around. What would be your advice for me to go ahead?

The problem with Gen Z is that you have not bothered to study the history of the nation. Please look up the history of the Shiv Sena and Bal Thackeray. Room for interpretation in indirect taxes is too low these days. What remains is only reconciliation part. Even a small time tax practitioner can argue GST case at GSTAT.

The correct answer is that every single NLSIU graduates is very successful, even those who entered through reservation and may not have had social capital and contacts. That’s because NLSIU is an exclusive institution that selects a small number of people and gives them high-quality education. It may not be the Harvard of Asia, but it is certainly the Harvard of India.

You literally had zilch activism from Gen X and Gen Y. In those days, NLUs were dominated by privileged rich kids. But nowadays, NLUs have students from the “real India“: lower middle class, poor, villages, small towns etc. Also a greater intake of SC/ST/OBC students, because of a hike in caste reservation. As a result, you see a lot more political activism than before. Not as much as JNU, but still a hundred times more than before. The question is will be see these students join politics full-time, like the many Left and Congress leaders who were once JNU snd DU student leaders?

Indian firms seem to think that its just a continuation of the servitude and bullshit until a specified date. You dont see 3 month notice periods at the Associate level (like, wtf??) in the UK - maybe that’s got something to do with the fact that the charade of “we have 100 people waiting to replace you” is just that - a charade. Maybe Indian firms should consider shorter notice periods so that they don’t have to pay these supposedly replaceable folks. And this is without going into issues such as deferred bonus components, which essentially ensure that people dont get paid for work they’ve ALREADY done should they dare to refuse to being subject to further unprofessionalism.

@OP - do your work and try not to burn bridges but do set some boundaries. No need to pick up calls or respond to emails late into the night, identify reasonable timelines for turning around deliverables and, if you’re being staffed on new matters, subtly keep mentioning that others should be staffed too since you will be leaving soon.

What does the traineeship entail? Do you do similar work to an associate but just get paid lesser? Also if you have not interned with CAM before and apply of this traineeship does it set you back? Have an interview soon for a traineeship position but dont know how to approach it and what the role would be exactly..

Agree with you.NLIU is the best choice, old and reputable institution, and have given great legal luminaries.l and far better than GNLU. GNLU is new on the block and not even comparable. I work as a legal head in a top corporate and we do not prefer GNLU. GNLU has180 student, large batch whereas other NLUs has smaller batches with better attention. NLIU

We recently learnt that he has finally submitted his Ph.D. thesis. The internal presentation happened sometime in June 2025, so he should get his degree later this year. While we were sad to see him go, it appears that the move to NLS has been good for him. At NALSAR, he was teaching more than 3-4 other professors combined for several years. Hope to see him writing and publishing more in the coming years.

What are we going to be flaunting? Vac Schemes, TCs, even LLM acceptances have all completely vanished from BO25 onwards. T1 firms don't hire nearly as much as they used to (our favourite Bengali firm for example). Maybe it's the grade scale, maybe it's the COVID batches, but something is wrong.

I hate to be blunt, I thought this of myself, if you are not from a t1 NLU and think of i have 5-6 months of Internships, guess what so do they.

I have now started getting internships at T1's but the fact is my CV when i started applying for t1's thinking oh I should be getting in was not good even though I thought it was.

There's only one option, but it will take time. Take a year off, and prepare for CAT. Study smart, clear the exam and join an IIM. Align your MBA choice with law, so once done and join a company, look for legal related fields. One example is international trade and investment law. Majority of MBAs don't know jack shit about this area. But legal background folks can easily work in this and also get to travel and live abroad.
