So my internship cell has posted about "infosys" legal internship. I wanted to know if someone has interned, do infosys or any in house like that for that matter give actual work? Also is there any conversion happening in these companies? What is current starting salary like in infosys just straight outta law school?

This is extremely unrealistic and rude behaviour. But on the other side, if this is the behaviour all over the Firm, I think the associates are doing you one big favour. You should not be at this kind of a place for your own happiness. Complete your internship and look for more dignified places (I know it is difficult to find in this industry, but they exist).

I was once an intern and am now an associate, and there are people like that who take pleasure in putting others down. The timeline was unrealistic, and it was crass on their part to laugh about it - don't let it bother you that much. Interns are expected to assist in the best possible way, and I am sure you would have done your part.

Find a better firm bro. In one of my previous internships, there was this one associate who would never explain the work properly and would be passive aggressive if I asked doubts. They yelled at me once for not doing a work properly. On a second occasion, I heard her laughing over an email that I had written to her. It was just a two line long email attaching the work that I had done. This one internship had a huge impact on my confidence. I started sending a draft of my email to check before I pressed the send button. So trust me, it's not u, it's them.

Interestingly, I worked with 4 other associates who never had a problem with my work or emails. I got a callback and decided to change my team.

I’m currently interning at a firm where I’ve noticed a concerning behavior. Whenever I ask associates for work, some of them laugh it off. Recently, one associate sent me a 237-page document very late, leaving me just 9 hours to review it. I couldn’t complete it within that unreasonable timeframe, and the next day, he called me out and laughed about it in front of others.

Am I truly at fault here, or was the timeline simply unrealistic? I’d really appreciate your honest guidance.

Environment will be a global issue. Leaving that apart, totally agree that India will be a very difficult country to live in the next 15 years for the middle class. You will be fine if you’re in the so-called lower class (enjoying freebies) or the top class. The middle class with suffer.

Yes, a growing number of people doing this. I would say take a loan, go abroad and settle there — any developed country will do. It’s worth it and you’ll recover the amount. It’s pointless being a lawyer in India unless you are a nepo kid. Also, India is going to be unliveable within the next decade: scorching heat, overpopulation, and horrible governance by our politicians, who are busy appeasing votebanks and using your taxes to give freebies. Even if you can survive with populism and overpopulation, your body will not be able to tolerate 50 degrees heat. According to this report by CNN, some parts of India are ALREADY approaching the threshold for human survivability. So imagine what will happen by 2035-40!

I keep seeing this question on LI. Understandable, because IP is one of the most interesting and exciting practice areas. But please understand that Delhi is not Palo Alto or Munich or Tokyo or even Shanghai. The level of innovation in India is very low and the cost of IP assets created in India are very low. The money lies only in protecting foreign IP assets. But even here, only a minuscule number of IP lawyers do cutting-edge work. Also, certain Lala firms have kept salaries low and even firms set up by NLSIU graduates have done the same: partly because these NLSIU grads have turned into Lalas themselves, partly because they need to compete with Lala firms and cannot justify higher fees to clients.

Thus, IP lawyers in India are very underpaid. The situation could change a bit if liberalisation takes place, but a sea change will happen only if India becomes an advanced economy like China has become. We are 50 years behind in that respect. Everyone hoped that Modi would undertake big bang reforms after 10 years of decay under the Congress, but he hasn’t done jack.

Can we quit the unnecessary gender wars? What is also "emblematic" is women fooling around in professional spaces too. Seen with my own eyes. There are women having flings when they are dating someone or married in our own law firms. Sometimes one after the other. Sometimes its part of the career ladder. Power imbalance? Can't tell you the times I have seen senior women fooling around with junior men in law firms. Men just suck at sneaking around. Women are born discrete.

Forget professional ethics - lots of people with shitty relationships are rampantly having office affairs. To be honest - its all fair to catch feelings in office, we are human, but once you mix business and leisure - lots of conflicts of interest arise. Emotional control is equally low for men and women in my opinion. Women are more sophisticated going about their dysfunction, men just more raw. End of the day, Byron - the CEO was equally involved in this as Kristen - the HR head.

Which part of the comment is "BS"? What does it say about you that you are so anxious to fight? I was refuting the proposition that only money will get you in. Are you one of those people who has just about enough money to be able to survive in such places but not the brains for them?

BS...any decent university along with the living expenses will cost you atleast 40-50 lakhs per annum. So no matter how intelligent you are, financial aid is definitely needed. If you actually want to pursue something abroad that will help pay off the loans quicker, it's MBA or Tech related.

If you are bad at math, don't even think of core engineering subjects. ECE, EEE, etc. are all calculus heavy. Trust me, I've been there and struggled.

May be you can manage CSE or IT related subjects. But if math is tough for you, engineering won't be easy.

Law is good but it's vastly different. Anyone can study law and do well in it. But the money is only in tier 1 law firms and the life there is something you need to consider if you're up for it.

There's no guarantee your drop year will lead to a Tier 1 NLU. Think well and decide what you really want. Rest is noise.

The grass is always greener on the other side. Most of the engineers in India get placed in companies like TCS that Pay 3-5LPA. In terms of growth opportunities, the career of an engineer usually finishes at 40-50 unless they do MBA.

The only positive about engineering is that work life balance would be better than lawyers but in terms of pay, there is no competition.

I am a dropper myself, I know it sucks to be 1 year late than everyone. But, I personally like it. This is not a degree one should take drop for. After doing law, there are a lot of things you can do, not just becoming an advocate. Like Policy making etc. etc. But, keep that in mind that this degree is not just about the law school and law subjects. It is about making connections, and a lot of hustle in general. If you are a first gen., like myself, and you don't make it to top law schools (I hope you do), it becomes insanely hard. But, it's all part of the process. Hopefully it's worth it.

A good engineer earns much more than a good lawyer, straight out of college. You have better chance of earning in 8 figures being an engineer than a lawyer.

A decent engineer earns as much as a good lawyer, or even more. A decade down the line, if engineers keep upskilling, they're likely to earn much more than law firm partners.

A mediocre engineer has more prospects of growth than a mediocre lawyer.

I have told this, now you can decide.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 state NLUs are clearly losing out to DU. Next will be Tier 1's.

1. Location makes a huge difference. Delhi itself (not NCR) has three good government law schools. That creates a cluster effect.
2. The first batches have not even graduated, and this is the scenario. Imagine what will happen in 5 years.

We haven't even spoken about the NFSU Law School (Delhi Campus) with its massive funding and impact, and the INI status.

COO CHRO CFO CMO etc in Indian law firms are overrated - add little value because they don't understand the firm dynamic or business environment. Their experience in big 4 or call centers translates badly in an Indian law firm setting - a collection of individual books with some cross sell. Indian firms are not brands with institutional clients and most of the COO CHRO CFO CMO etc fail to understand that.

Because currently it doesn’t make a difference. A-list recruiters just visit a handful of NLUs and JGLS, blindly shortlist the top 10% and recruit them (sometimes via internships, sometimes without). They don’t look at the quality of training received, but rather expect students to pick up skills during the job — exactly why Sudhir Krishnaswamy said at the India Today conclave that he doesn’t care what firms want.

I have heard him tell someone that he will quit the profession in a few years. I think he is definitely up there because he holds his own against Sibal, Rohatgi, Singhvi, etc., but he doesn't have the interest to cultivate a social media profile or to travel to other cities and tribunals. Maybe that way his profile may not be as high as others.

Pretty bad college in terms of faculty and placements. Especially for the fees they're charging. A lot of scandal surrounding the new director and his fake phd. He's blatantly lied about it on LinkedIn as well, claiming it's from a uni that it's not from. And pretty much anyone who addresses his PhD is removed from the job (note recent exits of 90% of the faculty). Bo '25 saw a stellar amount of people receiving campus placements (7 in a batch of 250)

Anyone that makes it to a top firm from that college is usually through merit and hard work.

Almost all of the top NLUs do have multiple good faculty with publications and project records. NFSU doesn't have any. Even more importantly, despite having so much funds, it is not even being able to attract good faculty with credible profiles. The only people who seem like a broken record are the trolls who keep singing NFSU law department's praise without there being anything tangible to show for it.
