- rampant construction: NUJS had to grow vertically as the space was limited, the construction has more than doubled the available floor space in the academic block; created new guest house, faculty quarters etc. New 14 storey AC hostels are also being constructed. Talks are ongoing to get the VSNL block next door for moving VC residence, sports faccilities and more quarters, would be completed this year whereby the campus size would grow to 7 acres. I agree it is taking a bit too long but as they day during metro constructions 'todays pain is tomorrows gain'
- PWD - most of the money for the construction came from WB govt (they have given over 100 crore in the last two years, about 5 crore was given by a reputed SC lawyer, some money was given by industry houses), it was WB givt which insisted that the executing agnecy be the PWD. ANy other VC would have highlighted all this but NUJS has always been a bit shy to beat its own drum.
- BSc - all NLUs are exapnding their student count, let us be honest, the only way for NLUs to pay salary for their lecturers and VC is to get money from tuition fee, with the UGC scale from 2018, it was impossible to pay salaries without doubling fees, however, all NLUs instead chose to double student numbers, now they needed cheap faculty otherwise the same problem recurs, so they hired TAs to do the tutorials etc. is it a good thing? absolutely not, I am not defending the situation merely explaining why. So the question is how did messiah do it - if you look at the fees structure and the amount of money they pay to the faculty members you would find out the answer, do some basic maths and you would find that they also employ TAs but their TAs are qualitiatively better
- gpa scale - it was an unmitigated disaster to change the gpa scale without appropriate checks, this is what happened when we get trapped into provicialism without necessary idea as to the wider market. the current EC has no one from the industry or anyone who has any degree from outside India or even PG degree (except the academic members), it is difficult for the EC to actually understand whatis going on and predict how gpa scale change would affect. the problem can be squarely led at the feet of the VC.
- Menon, Chmini and MP Singh as VCs: all stellar academics and very honest people
- Top SC lawyers like KKV, Gopal Subramanian and Dipankar Gupta on the governing body
- No interference from the government in administrative and academic matters
- Erudite politicians like Jyoti Basu, Buddhadev Bhattacharya and Somnath Chatterjee backing the institution (two of them being UK-educated barristers) --- not semi-literate goons.

For me, the key date that will determine the future of NUJS will be March-May 2026. If the electorate votes for status quo, then I'd prefer that the college be shut down rather than operate like this.

I completely agree with your perspective! The scope of legal tech is massive in my opinion. I can think of AI contract drafting and contract lifecycle management which many startups are already eying on. Apart from them lawfirm management tools are another opportunity. The present ones in the market are quite average for the price they charge. There are some American AI integrated law firm management softwares that actually bill firms around 1cr per year. I'm sure Indians can replicate the same thing at a much lower cost.
Apart from this, the biggest opportunity for legal tech is judiciary. The court systems and litigation as a whole in India is still a generation behind other industries when it comes to tech adoption. The use case scenarios are endless. But it will also be the toughest nut to crack as the entry barrier is too high. You need prominent lawyers and judges to back you if you want something implemented there or else getting an entry itself is so difficult.
My exposure to legal tech is still limited. I'm just a young 2PQE lawyer with a strong interest in tech and I'm very curious to explore more in legal tech specifically. I'm looking forward to a new path developing for lawyers away from the toxicity of law firms and litigation.
Yes, I used AI. And I have no problem saying that. This isn’t a writing competition; it’s a conversation about an industry that badly needs change. The ideas are mine — AI just helped express them better. I see AI as a tool that levels the playing field. If that makes some people uncomfortable, maybe it's because the usual gatekeeping—based on polished English or presentation—isn’t working anymore.
It’s a tool, like any other. Ignoring it doesn’t make you more authentic. It just makes you slower.
- Is there a joining bonus? (Pay is 18 LPA, right?)
- I have not been enrolled in CAM’s Associate Training Program (ATP), and it seems my team hired me as a dedicated resource for their team. Is this a good or bad thing?
- Should I speak to my team or HR to request inclusion in ATP?
- Is there any disadvantage to being a dedicated hire rather than part of ATP? I’m experiencing FOMO since almost everyone else is in ATP except me.

2. Learn to bookmark pdf files. This helps a lot when you are dealing with large files. It will save you a lot of time and impress your seniors while briefing them
3. Drafting will come over time. Don't stress it but at the same time try going over as many drafts as possible available in your office and try to understand the style of what is expected. You can use chatgpt but it shouldn’t show and also PLEASE verify the citations.
4. Learn to use SCC/manupatra/HC websites/ecourts. Especially helps when you want to understand whether a precedent has been overruled/followed/dissented etc. learn how to check whether HC order/judgement has been challeneged.
5. For those HCs which dont have live streaming - carry a diary/piece of paper on which you write in a few lines what happened in the matter, next date etc. for T1 clients this helps making client updates which your partner will hound you about
6. DO NO ATTEND CONFERENCES WITHOUT READING THE MATTER. No matter how junior you are, now you are expected to read the matter. Even if there are seniors on your team, prepare the matter so that you can step up if required. And trust me, it is noticed.
7. Download bare acts from SCC/manupatra. What i have found is most of the time they are up to date but some acts like the Income Tax Act which is amended yearly was not up to date but that is an exception. Point is that use up to date bare acts so you dont end up looking like an idiot. Also for state bare acts, run a google search to see if you’re missing any amendments because these are not updated periodically
8. If you’re assisting your partner/SA/Counsel in court have all relevant pages handy + print outs available if required to show the Court. Same applies to judgements etc.
9. Try becoming friendly with the court masters/registry if you go to particular courts. Initially all will seem distant but overtime they will help you out in exchange for (obv ₹₹₹). But what people dont understand is you cant just walk up to them with 500 and say do this. There has to be a relationship.
10. Keep a worksheet of the matters you work on from day 1. Whether it is research, drafting, preparing a matter etc as this will help you update your CV when you plan to leave. After 3-4 years no one remembers all matters they did unless they spent a good amount of time.

I apologise for the inconvenience my query caused. I had posted my doubts on other forums as well but most of the answer weren’t useful and some were outrightly trollish. I don’t wish to spend money on something which I regret later, I posted this here anticipating a positive response from individuals who have been in a similar position at some point. The thought Moving to the other end of the country is very daunting for me and I was only trying to be cautious.

As for freedom with small breaks - it really depends on finding the optimal chamber for your needs and wants. Its really a matter of luck because most chambers come with their own drawbacks.
