Hello,

Is it considered solicitation under Bar Council of India rules if a lawyer sends cold emails to potential clients offering legal services? Just want to understand if this is allowed or strictly prohibited.

If allowed, are there any specific disclaimers, or aspects (such as payment consideration) to be left out? For instance would initially offering free services and then building clients on a regular basis be cold calling.

I ask this because I'm quite confused as to how one builds clients if it's strictly prohibited. Personal referrals may only work to an extent, specially when you are young and starting out.

I am writing this post out of sheer frustration. Once again the Management of Saraf and Partners have delayed our appraisal and bonuses. While most other firms have paid them out, effectuated increments, these folks haven’t even bothered to start the appraisal process. After that Lord MS and his Management Committee stooges will take their own sweet time to make the pay outs. Is it really ethical on their part to do this without regard to the plight of the associates and other counsels in the Firm who may have EMIs, loans and other financial obligations and commitments! Not everyone lives in their Kapashera farms and Panchsheel ivory towers that these things don’t matter.

Would they have delayed this if it was a client deliverable? More pertinently would they have tolerated this delay if an associate is unable to complete an assignment on time once, forget doing it repeatedly? It’s sickening. For all the chasers they send us to bill on time and come to office on time and deduct half days for delays etc. why can’t the overlords apply the same discipline themselves?!

I don’t want to bitch about the Firm on a public forum- but I am beyond frustrated. Just venting out here. Apologies for the rant.

Situation is pretty similar to what it was before, it will take some time to gage how different it exactly is. When you refer to situation I assume you mean overall situation and not just admin. See you'll get whatever support you need for studies, moots, adr and other such things. Seniors definitely help you to their best abilities and that definitely makes the overall situation better. The thing about NLUO is that you get what you want, as in, you want to party hard? You'll get your people, you want to study your ass off? You'll get your people, you want to debate all night long? You'll get your people. There is a little bit of everything for everyone here, and that I feel makes the college a very good space.

Basically the title. The market seems to be bad. Number of PPOs is definitely less for us. What should we focus on doing better in this cluttered market where the next CV is as good as ours? Should we leverage alum connections? (For those of us in T1s) Networking? Improving on basics?

I am from Gurgaon and want to build a career in IP. I know IP pays less than corporate but WLB is better. I want to understand if this is true or not.

Also, what kind of salaries can I expect?

I know K&S, Remfry has office in Gurgaon. Any other big IP firm in Gurgaon?

I am in my 2nd year of law school and want to start early, please guide me as no one else in my family is a lawyer and I have to figure this out on my own.

Christ is decent enough, don't take a loan for NLIU. In your vacations, make it a point to have as much exposure through various kinds of internshhip that you can. You may have limited chances to get college placements to a T-1 but if you intern well enough you should be able to get a decent PPO in your 4th or 5th year. Worst case scenario, you can move to a T-1 after 2-3 year work ex if you're on top of your game. That's not something NLIU can guarantee you anyway.

I understand that being in a pretty unknown or a random college for law mostly doesn't do you good.

I'm talking about decent private universities like Symbiosis Pune or Jindal or Christ here.

I've gotten through Christ Law School's entrance examination now, but I also have a shot with NLIU Bhopal.

Now, any sane person would go for the NLU over Christ, I get that. But being from Bangalore, Christ is so much more affordable for us + saves us the travelling expenses when compared to NLIU.

Is an education loan worth it for NLIU? Should I go for it? Please help

Know a few folks who work there as SAs / PAs / Partners. What I can say is - fantastic experience working against them. the PAs and Partners are all super sharp, and knowledgeable. Great fun negotiating with them, and generally their DD quality, transaction docs quality is pretty good.

From what I hear, the Pay is not bad at all - think close to top tier 2 bands.

For god's sake - please get the terminologies right. They had Day Zero in July 2024 - and now celebrating offer received in May 2025 as Pre-placement offer (PPO). Seriously? That's called a placement offer not PPO. PPO is an offer before the day zero at the campus. . Grow up man

Hi! Looking for disputes roles (PQE ~ 4 years) (mix of tier 1 and chambers)

Trying to look for openings in tier 1 law firms (SAM, KCO, TRI, AZB or any other firm that may pay at par) in Delhi. Well paying chambers (70-80k and above) would also work. I know my workex would be discounted in tier 1s- so looking for a3 roles.

Would really appreciate if any leads can be shared here. bit of urgency on this and recruiters and cold emails are not seeming to work due to the cluttered vacancies.

At the time when things were bad, NLUJ had just one exam left. The Jodhpur Collector had already issued an order suspending all educational institutions and examinations. Despite this, the university initially planned to proceed with the exam. However, the night before, IIT Jodhpur issued evacuation orders for its hostels, and the situation was visibly escalating. Following multiple student requests, NLUJ responded by offering students the option to take a re-examination at a later date, although the exam was not formally cancelled.

The biggest suggestion would be to intern under the Judge you want to be an LR with. Do a long term internship, get to know how they hire LRs. Possibly talk to the PS or Court Staff about hiring you as u have previously worked under that Judge.

As of now, Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju has a vacancy for an LR. You can try interning there, you can easily convert that into LRship.

You seem to be misinterpreting what a hiring freeze is. Of course, the firm will still hire based on requirements - i.e., if someone leaves or a new partner has been elevated, requisite hiring will take place. However, unlike the BO 2025, they will not hire 100 new people this year as they do in good years and 60-70ish in average years. This year the level of mass hiring will be much smaller, to my understanding, maybe 20-30 people, to be revisited around Day0 based on Q1 performance (which, needless to say, is terrible). If people wish to take a few ppos as evidence of no hiring freeze, that will soothe any anxiety but take the advice of someone who's heard it on the inside, aggressively look for back ups.
