Former JGLS faculty here. You raise a valid question which I think is the back of the mind of all faculty who try to make the shift abroad. I had no idea students and alumni were thinking about it. Let me breakdown a few potential reasons (some of which you have identified).

1. The promotion system is a joke:

There is no set criteria for promotions - ranks are often subject to favouritism/negotiation. I know exceptional academics who were offered positions which I believe were one rank lower than they deserved during the recruitment process. You will also see faculty being promoted without a substantial body of scholarship but solely for their administrative roles/appeasing the institution. ▮▮▮ is one such faculty who I believe benefited from implementing some highly questionable policies towards students which did not take their best interests into consideration. I urge you to do a quick search on Google Scholar for his academic work - you will find no publications and no citations.

Then there is the question of foreign faculty. JGLS wants to maintain a foreign faculty ratio - which is one of the metrics for the ranking systems in place. Some foreign faculty would have no chance even getting to academia in established universities abroad. Sure some have an academic interest in India but others are quite frankly unemployable elsewhere.

2. Biases in Recruitment at Overseas Universities

Universities in the West rarely value Indian qualifications or work experience. The two scholars you mentioned are well respected, but ultimately it is not an even playing field.

3. Willingness to Compromise on Rank

Ultimately, many of us are willing to compromise on rank if we get a position at a decent university overseas. There are so many factors at play: salaries (a postdoc overseas can earn more than a senior academic in India); the administration being a mess (random teaching allocations and more favouritism); comparatively less resources (research grants for example); teaching loads; and of course - quality of life and Sonipat (I would love to work in a metro - but there can be a major gap in salaries at national law unis vs private unis).

Curious what your thoughts are about ranks of professors at JGLS v/s their teaching abilities in the classroom (obv just one factor in being a solid academic).

There are many litigators languishing in boutiques and chambers like me who would put up with all the toxicity in the world to get paid the way some Tier 1 associates are. Not only do these boutique/chamber associates work longer and harder, they tend to be more skilled with direct exposure to courtcraft and grassroots litigation. Many tier 1 partners and HRs don't realise that if they got over their NLU and Tier 1 obsession, they could recruit far better talent from boutique and chamber associates at 50% the rate they offer to associates switching from other Tier 1s. Tier 1 freshers are getting 18-20LPA with no experience whatsoever whereas an Associate with 5 years of good experience would work at the same rate. There's a serious lack of awareness among Tier 1 partners and HR managers on how broad the litigation market is.

I am genuinely worried about the mental health of my roommate. It is not unusual to see her cry late night. When asked what is wrong, she never gives straight answers. I chose to turn a blind eye towards her antics, as I have been busy with end-semester exams, but yesterday I caught a glimpse of her arm which was full of blade/knife cuts. I have got good reasons to believe she is suicidal, but she threatened me not to talk about it to anyone, especially college authorities. What shall I do in this situation?

I am confused about this choice. I have the financial resources to attend both, but I am leaning towards NMIMS because it is located in Bombay, it can give me more opportunities to secure internships and consequently placements. I would love if any alumni from either schools could help me decide which one I should pick.

My theory is that the University deliberately omitted the "Meet Our New BA LLB (Hons) Students | AY 2024–25" announcement. It is now up to the Student Bar Association of NLSIU to ask the obvious question to the University Administration: why has it refrained from making this announcement?

Sudhir is planning to shut BALLB so that the BALLBs cannot take away the limelight from LLBs. You will see similar announcements on multiple fronts. When BALLB students win something moot/nego/scholarships they post it as "a student from NLSIU". When LLB students win something, they post it as "a student from the 2nd year of LLB programme". Slowly, people will forget BALLBs and Sudhir will do good to shut this programme in his final year.

Every year, NLSIU publishes a webpage titled “Meet Our New Students | BA LLB (Hons) Programme.” However, this page appears to be missing for the academic year 2024–2025.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that I might have an answer to this missing puzzle—but I seek your application of mind. Please take this seriously, as it is very important to understand what prompted the University to take such a deliberate step.

NISM Mumbai has brought back it's flagship one-year LLM in securities laws and cap marks after a one-year discontinuation. It has produced some great placements in the past and NIMS is considered as the gold-standard institute when it comes to studies in securities market.Can anyone shed light on the same in terms of market value, academics, exposure and average /highest package. The closure of the course in 2024 prompted me take up job in cap marks and have been working for almost an yer now. Would it be worth to take up the course now??

I have 3 years of post-qualification experience (PQE). I worked for 1 year in the M&A team of law firms. I quit due to micromanagement, thinking I would have a much better life working in-house with better work-life balance. However, I feel that I am not really growing in my present role. I have seen many competition lawyers doing LLM from abroad and getting in-house roles at big tech. How important is LLM for the competition law space in order to grab opportunities in such big tech companies (both in India and foreign)? Also, does foreign LLM play any role in becoming a partner in an Indian law firm?

Hello. I am a first-generation law student from a baby NLU. I have been browsing LI since the clat days. I’ve explored and have decided to litigate in Delhi. I have a good batch rank, some competitions and publications but my biggest asset is my internship performance and my passion for knowledge. I want to intern at the chambers of senior advocates/AORs that give me substantial work and pay me an apt stipend. (the acknowledgement of my work matters more than the amount)

Overall, I am looking for suggestions where I could utilise my skills and diligence. I don't care if the work is 13-14 hours a day as long as I am able to make my boss’ work easier and I am getting to learn something I have some prior drafting experience and I can work for long hours without any problem, basically implying that I don't have a life.

Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I want to work in places where the junior gets a handsome salary but I know that is impossible in third year. Agree. Faizan's NALSAR background make him acceptable to students, while his religious background and anti-BJP positions make him acceptable to the TMC. However, Faizan's track record suggests he is honest and has not indulged in corruption. He also invited NALSAR alumni to get more involved with the institution and personally wrote emails to alumni. Will TMC want such a person? Wouldn't they like a ▮▮▮ puppet who keeps alumni out?

A&O and other magic circle law firms have been using it for a few years now. They haven't seen any hiring freeze. What AI will do is cut down the time for deals. The deal that took 6months, will get done in 3months. Court cases will start moving faster. The need for junior lawyers will not go away.

It is true that the TD team or anyone else in team ATU is either better or extremely good in comparison with that other team. If anyone tries to list down the “actual” issues with that other team then those comments won’t be posted by LI. May be that other team does what it does intentionally or they genuinely do not know how to run a deal or how to deal with team members or peers. This is a genuine comment and not an attempt to malign anyone but to save young lawyers and their morales and confidence.
