Been there since time immemorial. In the wake of MeToo, there were lots of posts of FB, X and Medium against certain “star” students of NLSIU and NLUD. LI had covered it too. All forgotten now and some of the perpetrators went on to study LLMs in human rights abroad — with scholarships no less. 🙄 Unfortunately, if your grades are high, you are literally a god at NLUs and you can get away with anything, including violence against girls. This same mentality carries over when these people become partners at big firms.

Thoughts on this? So only jobs available will be in government? And will lawyers be immune from it?

There are no deserving institutions for the second place award. India is in a situation which can be best described by thinking of the following hypothetical: Oxford (or Cambridge, take your pick) being no. 1, and many other major law schools (Edinborough, King's, LSE, UCL, Queen Mary, SOAS, Warwick) all shutting down. (With NLSIU being the Oxford or Cambridge of the hypothetical, of course.)

this is all my opinion:

Best: Unquestionably H.R Khanna. To take on tyrants even at the risk of harming ones career is sadly not a quality often observed among Indias supreme court judges.

Strong second-place contenders: Chelmeshwar, Hidayathulla, Sathasivam, UU Lalit, RF Nariman, maybe Kurian, maybe Indu Malhotra. Fairly independent minded judges, many of whom demonstrated deep appreciation for the Constitution and for the rule of law generally. No major corruption allegations; they did their work quietly and did their work well.

Worst- I don't know, maybe Ranjan Gogoi, or Dipak Misra, or K. Subba Rao. Maybe K G Ballakrishnan Big corruption allegations make everyone lose faith in the law.

Both best and worst: Krishna Iyer, Bhagwati, the Chandrachuds, Altamas Kabir, Katju.
These I go back and forth on. They're really good on some issues but seem to lose objectivity on others or have unseemly public lives that lead to loss of faith in the objectivity of the judiciary. They are all impactful though. Not forgettable. Law people can discuss their legacies for years and not come to an agreement.

Even if they don't. it is undeniable that they have consistently beaten NLUs in national and international qualifiers, as well as international moots. They were runners-up in the OxPrice South Asia Qualifiers (which had "NLU participation"), reached the semifinals in NALSAR CCI, and each Vis team won an international Vis pre-moot. They did not perform as well in their own Indian Vis Pre-Moot due to an institutional policy of not advancing their own teams to the knockout rounds of competitions they host. But both teams performed well in their respective Vis moots in Hong Kong and Vienna. They won the Leiden CRC (last year, NLUJ reached the semifinals, and this year, multiple NLUs participated), and another JGLS team reached the semifinals. They were runners-up in the Asia Pacific rounds for Manfred (which also had NLU participation), with the only team they lost to being SMU, a Singaporean university. They were the best Indian team there. Last year, they won the international rounds of FDI, reached the quarterfinals in INTA, won NLUJ Antitrust, and were runners-up in PAX (which had Indian teams participating). In fact, SMU did not perform well in PAX, and if you're familiar with mooting, you know that the Ivy Leagues don't have a strong mooting culture (the last Ivy League team to win a grand slam was Harvard, which won Jessup nearly five years ago). SMU and NUS are the undeniable leaders in mooting, and jindal has been able to compete with them. JGLS, however, has consistently excelled in all grand slams and other prestigious moots over the past five years. All these wins and achievements isn't a simple coincidence, its reflective of a larger pattern. No NLU is even close; JGLS has surpassed them. Brother, it’s not about the Ivy Leagues, but rather about creating a healthy mooting culture that fosters the success of young mooters—something JGLS has achieved, while other Indian colleges have not. It is that simple.

Since OP asked for Litigation specifically, I wouldn’t mention KCO, a simple perusal of the causelist will sufficiently explain why. Trilegal on the other hand still regularly appears and SR’s team does actually churn out good content for the field. For actual work, it’s recommended to go through a week or two’s causelist and check which firms appear regularly because that means they have matters, big ticket or small doesn’t necessarily matter since its entry level that OP is looking for.

Not sure about the rest of the firm, but I’ll tell you this, was at the Mumbai office of at a Tier 1.5/2 firm (Hint: Name of the firm starts with ▮▮▮ and ends with ▮▮▮), and saw a pretty good looking/ cute associate. He works under one of the ▮▮▮ partners team (▮▮▮/▮▮▮/▮▮▮), and also had a very unique profile from his LinkedIn (dude was selected by one the armed forces- ▮▮▮ or ▮▮▮). Decent guy, to the point and just overall sweet.

Not an answer to your question, but: This is one of the first useful pieces I have seen posted on Legally India. Thanks. I am completely blind, and this sort of thing tends to get very confusing indeed for me, because of the criptic way assistive technology software packages (often called screen readers) often announce/describe these emojis. (And BTW I am Gen Z.) Even the piece isn't perfect, because it doesn't use the exact language which a common screen reader like JAWS or NVDA would use when encountering such a thing, but I can correspond most of the descriptions in my head to what words the piece uses.

So yes, if you do want some sort of an answer, you might send such a message. But if the associate on your team happened to be blind, they might just wonder what the heck you meant!

Ishwar Bhat was a hardcore RSS man. Yet he was the one who handed over NUJS to the TMC on a platter and executed the TMC’s orders. Thus, we shouldn’t read party politics into it. These VCs are chameleons who will change their loyalties overnight. It’s up to the students to stand up and resist corruption and misgovernance. Unfortunately, however, the present generation is simply not interested in that. All they want is inflated grades and they are happy.

Drafting and maybe even arguing, in tier 1 firms I've worked on drafting pleadings and research mostly. The partners argue as well if the client doesn't request hiring a senior advocate. Arbitrations are entirely handled by them. Even due diligence in some cases, very few corporate teams actually pursue the litigation aspect of their subject area, they may advise. For example, the banking and finance team advised a client regarding cirp but all the applications and the pleadings were drafted by the disputes team who actually went to court as well to file and argue. Disputes work is 90% drafting and research. The significant amount of evidence and documents makes it a very time consuming process, like in an arbitration you get like 50,000 pages of evidence which you have to turn into a statement of claim, list of documents, requisition list, etc.

Bo25, got medical issues so physically couldn't intern much during the fourth year, got a callback from trilegal and cam in the fifth year but it would be post july, when I graduate. Im from a pvt college (Was in sls Pune but had to switch due to financial and other reasons). College will be of no help, I have interned with 3-4 tier 1 firms wrt to my practice area (disputes). What should I do after graduation, is it a possibility that the callbacks could be converted into A0 position or should I just take whatever firm or advocate that would accept me?

Most communist regimes in the world have always been very suppressive of individual rights and liberty. Stalin outlawed homosexuality in erstwhile USSR, which was not repealed until the regime came crashing down. The hero of modern day lefties, Che Guereva, along with his mentor Castro were known to be vocal homophobes and racists. Communist China continues to censor queer media (well, pretty much any media which they do not agree with). Civil rights for gay and trans people have been primarily spearheaded in Western free market capitalist countries by center left to center right political parties (circa 2001, the Netherlands), not by pro-authoritarianism commie whackjobs.

Personally, I strongly support trans rights, but I feel many activists shot their own feet by needlessly pushing on the sports issue-- something that is unfortunately, unjust.

I posted a status on how the Katy Perry & Co space trip led to unnecessary excessive emissions-- she took it personally and said that women who earned their wealth are allowed to spend it the way they deem fit. Following that, next day in office she sarcastically commented how I too am adding to emissions by driving a non-EV car to office daily.
