If you have been doing well at work, then law firms are generally more generous in giving some time off. Well performing resources are generally over worked and hence them taking sabbatical is not uncommon and is considered acceptable. However it is better not to reach that stage and join a team that values some work life balance atleast.

This is very partner specific. In the team I currently work with, the partner is on the heavier side and doesn’t believe in health exercise etc. The partner is a new EP who has to make ends meet and doesn’t care about teams health or even own health for that matter. They don’t have high billing or marque work. Still this is the case. My friend works with a more established partner who not only promotes physical health but also mental health and my friend and his colleagues go to the gym or Pilates/yoga almost everyday while closing newspapers deals.

The next NUJS VC appointment is not a foregone conclusion as some of you may think. We are inching towards the next assembly election and the TMC is looking vulnerable because of anti-incumbency and various scams. Plus, the TMC itself has different factions, especially the legal wing who are represented in the NUJS governing bodies. Though Sanjay Basu and Aquilaw are loyal to Bhaipo, Kalyan Banerjee (the godfather of AG Kishore Datta) has shown the power of the Pishi faction after the recent fight with Mahua Moitra.

Thus, the next VC appointment will see different players try to place their candidate. Some are loyal to Pishi, some to Bhaipo, some are loyal only to themselves and could switch to the BJP anytime. The students should definitely take advantage of the situation and push for a good NLU alum as a consensus candidate.

Hi. wanted some information on how is it to work in the chambers of young lawyers who left their partner roles to start their own counsel practice. Many had left, SAM, CAM and NDA to start their own. Any insights on nature of work and pay? (Examples - Indruj Rai, Moazzam Khan, AK Bhat)

The biggest reason you’ve to keep working is lifestyle inflation. If you want everything - fancy car, foreign vacations every year, own house in a posh neighbourhood in a top 5 city, every subscription that’s out there, sure you have to keep working. If you can be content with a wagon r or swift, rent in a cheaper part of town, delete Zomato / Swiggy, drink at home, then law firms pay enough to plan an earlier than avg retirement.

I was just going through this Bill and holy shit is it poorly drafted. Look at s.295A which is sought to be added into the IPC by section 19 of this Bill. The second proviso to this proposed s.295A uses the following words "....which shall be assessed by the factors as specified in sub-section (2) of section 5 of this Act." This proviso is referring to s.5(2) of the Bill and not the IPC. No one proof read this. At least the proviso sought to be added to s.505(3) of the IPC by s.21 of the Bill does not contain this same error. That proviso specifies that s.5(2) of this Bill is being referred to.

Law is demanding because you are easily replaceable- the work is repetitive after a point, there is barely anything that can be categorised as true innovation, and when there are tons of ppl ready to replace you, the only way to prove your worth is to squeeze more work in the great equaliser of 24 hrs. Then starts the toxicity cycle

This is not the case in non-law workplaces, especially in case of a software engineer.

The biggest advantage is the ability to move countries, something we rarely get to do.

pls drop mt kario, you'll regret later, you in the country's top law college, trust me things will get better in some time, focus on your skill development, study hard, do internships and extracurricular activities and get a job once you'll graduate, after you have become independent there is no need to keep ties with your parents either, trust me I have been in the same boat, hence speaking from experience. Remember career is more imp than relationships.

See a counsellor or psychologist. Do CBT and try to learn some tools to cope with your mental health.
Life isn't easy. University isn't easy. Most things in life are challenging. Try to learn to cope and develop grit. That is how you will succeed.

I am in the final year of NALSAR and have abusive parents. I connect with you on this, i have thought about dropping out every day, but now I have a job at hand, a girlfriend and friends outside campus because noone here talks to me lol. Please give it more time and introspect on your goals, because if I had dropped out like my mom threatened to, I wouldnt have sustained in this world.

tbh, there have been people who have been given makeup exams after momentarily taking a break. Write to VC, Regi and acad chair about your circumstances and hopefully, get a meeting to explain it to them. They would be able to give u makeup exams or repeat the year as you like and you can still carry on.

Further, you can also reach out to the Mental Health Policy Group and see if they can advocate regarding your circumstances with the important authorities, considering sometimes admin is not as supported as students are. They might be able to negotiate on your behest.

Additionally, in light of student suic*des everywhere, NALSAR has collaborated with MindPeers which is a good mental health support group as I hear and I think would be able to help you by giving important mental support via therapy, outside of the college therapists.

Lastly, since you are in NALSAR, you would have worked very hard to reach where you are, and I think its important to take a step back to gain yourself, but also not let everything you have worked for so far. If you need anything, I am also one of your seniors and you can reach out to us at anytime and we would help you. Your mentors, academic mentors, tutors and everyone else are all here to help you.

Full disclosure: I am the type of kid you are thinking of (no lawyers in family except for my mum's dad, who doesn't count because he stopped practicing in the 1970's). My dad's a venture capital person working out of a T1 city, I attended an IB school there and am studying law at university abroad. From this perspective, here are my opinions on this question and on some of your observations:

1. A middle class kid and a nepo kid can be of the same intellectual strength (after all, brains are not so much designed based on privilege as biology). Of course, very often you will find two kids - one middle class, one nepo - where the former is a lot smarter than the latter. You might also find the other way around (I wouldn't know, as I personally haven't seen the other extreme). Regardless of that, my experience is that middle class kids often have more initiative and a higher drive to make the most of the opportunities given to them, whereas nepo kids are more likely to become relaxed and think everything will become okay, once they achieve the baseline. For example, I know a kid in my uni who is from a deprived (in the UK context) part of London. He and I often study together. He is so visserally thankful to our uni (despite being very smart indeed and having achieved a tripple A* at A Levels) for giving him the opportunity to do law there, that that gratitude sometimes drives him to do (what might seem like) really crazy things, like staying up all night to do the additional readings that the professors give us as a topup to the essential stuff. Obviously, everyone with any sense knows that doing above average in the exams requires you to do some additional readings, but nobody is as committed as this chap - if your average weekly reading list contains five essential and five additional readings most of the time, the week this guy does four out of the five additional readings will be a once in a blue moon occasion. The logic behind this is that despite being British and everything, a Russell Group education was like a fantastic dream for this guy, and he'd rather torture himself into sickness doing extra work and find that it is a reality that he has this education, than not make the most and find it really is a dream.

2. Received wisdom in elite circles in India, which I have experienced, and in the UK (based on certain opinion columns I have read in the London Times) would have us believe that to be successful, we should surround ourselves with other elite, rich, successful people. The correctness (or otherwise) of that, I don't know. However, what I do know is that it is very important for us rich people to have middle class contacts and connections like my friend, described above.

3. You are right from a finance perspective, but not necessarily in other ways. The Amity kids paying independent tuition (and trust me, there are some of those) are not at all smart people, and add little to these unis' reputation or name (among other things, because they tend not to do very well in their studies anyway). I hardly know of any who end up staying back abroad once they are done with their studies, so TBH they can be a bit of a liability for the type of unis you are thinking about.

4. As for what you said about qualified teachers in the IB schools, again yes and no. For example, my economics teacher in 11th and 12th was an engineer with an MBA under the belt, meaning my friend who went to study Economics as an undergraduate in Toronto will have had three more years of economics education at university than her high school economics teacher! At the same time, my English teacher had a BsC in Microbiology from India, and a second bachelor's, followed with a master's, both in English literature, both done in the U.S.

How do you know his father is not paying half his salary to support his law school + coaching fees. Law is a long, and expensive degree.
"privilege" is not an argument against everything. For this guy/ girl to have a problem, they don't need to be as poor as to not afford two square meals.

Someone spent their hard earned money, and they equally have a case for concern. They are not as privileged to afford not being selected as a judge, unlike others who have forefathers in the profession.

Just because there are other arguments doesn't make someone's subjective experience bogus. Grow up.

As an M&A PA in a T1 I keep seeing this from competition teams - "Top Matters".

The quality of the deals is down to the M&A teams present in the firm.

They are not generating their own deals. Competition teams rarely originate work.

Most deal lawyers would prefer more certainty from competition lawyers - rarely get it.

Some people are overworked, some people are absolutely coasting doin nothing. Doesn't make sense. Partners have their favourites. Doesn't appear to be a team but actually different verticals with all the Partner level politics.., appease one of the overlords to get by or pay the price.

Comments sections passed the vibe check. Where are all these apparently grief stricken, emotionally intelligent sweethearts when the deceased was alive and well and needed support? The minute a kid passes away suddenly we need day offs and canceled exams? Unabashed exploitation.

if you are financially secure shift to teaching after doing an LLM, you can do a couple of taster lecture at your local NLU to see how it feels

if you have generational wealth you may consider shifting to private practice

if you have none of the above you may move to in-house for more stable work hours

I have a better hairline than Cavill, my spouse and I look better than the Ambanis, and I am more successful in my profession than ARK is in his.

None of the descriptors you listed are the source of happiness, and are pure luck. Ultimately, if I have more peace of mind than the three men you listed, I win (not that it is a competition).

I am much older than the Gen Z readers here. From my experience, I can confirm that the stereotype is true: rich guys have it easy. Be it in terms of career opportunities, educational opportunities, dating and marrying desirable women, and just general quality of life. The advantage they start with in life is just too large to bridge for those from regular backgrounds. At best, what regular guys can hope for is to earn a lot of money so that their children can have the benefits they could not. You can live your dreams vicariously through your children!

Word going around the Bombay office that CAM is set to introduce a new designation like KCo and 3L. This is to acknowledge PAs who have to be promoted early but can’t be given Partnership yet. This is different from the Director or Partner Designate tag which is for PAs who have spent too much time with that designation but aren’t ready for Partnership. They will announce in July with the Partnership elevations. Expected to earn upto 1cr. No confirmation yet.

There are 2-3 scholarships specifically for Indian students for the BCL - Ambriti Salve, Cornelia Sorabji, and Ratanshaw Bomanji Zaiwalla. The criteria for awarding these scholarships are nowhere available. I have been trying to find some common thread by looking through the profile books and the LinkedIn profiles of the previous scholars. I could find nothing.

Are the scholarships awarded randomly? Or is having contacts with Mr. Salve (or Mr. Sarosh Zaiwalla) necessary? Do they have a say at all?

Pay beats a few firms, may be behind tier 1s but the culture is unparalleled. Work-life-balance actually exists and interns and associates get incredible support from the partners.

Personally know several people that have applied to work at the firm because of Karthik's kindness and mentorship. I have interacted a lot with him even though I did not work with the firm but he has supported my career in ways that no partner/mentor I have worked with has. Anyone that works at the firm probably has it way better from growth and support.

Tier 1s have the same story across, no work-life-balance but high pay. They own your soul but have your back and you will grow with glass ceiling

Let me help you. If it’s SM’s or AM’s or KN’s or NG’s or DP’s team, please do join. These are the best teams to work with. But, if it’s AS or TD or UJ’s (acronymically ATU), then, do your thorough diligence (for instance, read up the existing threads about ATU and these partners on LI, talk to ppl who have been part of ATU) and advent at your own risk.

College societies are generally not seen as a mandatory exercise from a job or a career pov, infact you can save that time and invest on health, friends, hobbies, relationships or productive stuff like grades and publications. The entire notion of importance of societies stems from tier 1 law schools perspective where the seniors run them independently, two where socialisation with seniors bears fruits for you professionaly. In the private college where I studied college societies were hotspots of incompetent people trying to get some association, or even worse a podium for guys and girls to get laid in disguise of doing society work. None of which imo i would suggest you. Unless there is a society whose ideas you see as ideas worth living or something extraordinary, then you may pass on the idea of joining college socs. You may actually join Placecom of college if it's allowed this early because only Place Coms have details and work related to jobs/ career.
