A good employer should give these perks:

- Medical

- Laptop, tablet and phone

- Car

- Driver

- Amazon vouchers

- Taj/Oberoi meal vouchers

- One foreign holiday per year

- 25 days holiday per year, excluding national holidays

This will keep employees, happy, reduce attrition and attracts a better quality of employers.

Ensure you do not leave holes open that can get you in further debt- get insurance. Try to pay back substantial sums from your salary, but nothing too much that you are cutting down on essentials. Don't engage in any other debt instrument like credit cards.

Be very careful. I am saying this because you said you are dealing with a life time of indebtedness. There are many reasons sometimes out of our control - but I want to say something that is not often said.

I helped my parents with the debt clearance and it did not help. My father just made newer and bigger ones. My mother refused to intervene to keep the peace.

I paid off a crore in debt and helped with the house repairs, car etc. Dad kept throwing money into a fire with a business project that did not take off.

So ask some deeper questions - is this a rope tied to a sinking ship? You may really want to confront that reality. I did not and suffer for it in lost opportunities etc.

If people who are supposed to make responsible decisions are not doing it - please ask tough questions. Because we are ingrained to help our parents out of a tight spot.

But demand responsible behaviour, otherwise you just become a new revenue stream for them with extra gratitude steps and they think they have a longer rope with irresponsible finances.

You will notice people, especially men in their last chance saloon moments take crazy financial decisions. Be aware of this phenomenon.

If you need to deal with your guilt of cutting the rope, get your parents on a good health insurance plan funded by you - just cover it.

You got their back health-wise, but if the money just keeps going missing - you need to put down terms of financial responsibility as they get older.

You can also say you will only put money in a joint account with them - where transactions need your approval. They get the financial security but you need to monitor things.

From my experience - its do-able if the sum is a few crores from a job in T1 - but think beyond just debt repayment too. You have your life too.

The university has many problems and the protest was justified until it was commandeered by a horrifyingly unethical subset of students pushing SAC and mess food quality (?!?!) demands, shouting at the admin like that would do anything. These folks didn't even know ▮▮▮.

What's embarrassing is that this is the second damn time a student's death is being politicised to push an agenda. Fight for the SAC in its own time and space, damn you.

I'm a student at a Tier 1 law school (where Magic Circle firms do recruit 3-4 people every year). I wanted to enquire whether they hire for positions in jurisdictions outside Europe and the US - specifically in Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE, or other regions closer to India. If they do, is the recruitment process similar to their hiring procedures for Europe and the US?

I know an associate who works there and they are pretty content and happy with the pay and work. Their working hours are good (except if an urgent transaction has come up- in that case you may be required to spend late nights) and the partners are understanding. Does not seem to be toxic. The partners are from AZB and SAM.

They don't take freshers usually. Not so sure about the pay increment over the years but they do initially match your last pay. I think it's a good firm to work as an associate but I'm not sure if there is enough work for interns. They take max 1-2 interns at a time, so it must be atleast better than most bulk intakes in T-1s.

Delimitation is about effective representation. But Araghya short sells the extent to which India really is a Union of States. We very nearly were not a country because of the language issue, delimitation would cut even deeper.

Southern states are arguing that theyre being punished for being successful in limiting population growth and punished for having successful economies as they contribute more to the national kitty than they take in. If one only sticks to the principle that representation must be based on population—one in effect encourages bad behaviour—the more people you make, the poorer they are, the more voice you will have in parliament. It starts off a race to the bottom.

This really isn't about which party will win or lose. Karnataka routinely votes for different parties or delivers mixed electoral results. It's as likely a state for the BJP as it is for the congress. However, even kannadigas would be wary of delimitation because there is a real bipartisan sense among people in the state that they are being taken for a ride.

These states are not successful because of some flip of the coin or because of the beneficence of the central government. They are successful because they have routinely voted based not on religious or caste based issues, although those factors may be present in a minor way, but on governance. Culturally as well, religious divisions run less deep in the southern states. You only notice the difference once youve lived in the north and the south, theyre like different countries in this respect. Political parties in the south know that they should have a list of accomplishments come election time or be prepared to lose sorely, that stoking religious or caste hatred would not tide them over in the face of failures in governance.

So they invest in the law and order, invest in schools, and keep their economies from running into debt by trying to attract new industries. Why do so many people from all over the country come to Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai to study engineering and medicine and management and heck law? Why did tech companies set up shop in these cities rather than in Patna, Lucknow, or Ranchi? It certainly isnt because the people of Ranchi, Patna, or Lucknow are less industrious or less capable- many of those people work in tech and attend schools in the south. Its because their governments have neglected to invest in the same things- law and order, education, new and emerging industries etc.

We all want to live by noble ideas of one person one vote, one vote one value, southern states are not disputing the validity of that claim. But they are arguing that if we are so unequal in our priorities and our development, they would lose by artificially imposing a legal requirement of one vote one value on these disparate states. And they arent wrong. No amount of clever legal/ theoretical argument would convince them to give up their own self interest. Perhaps what would quiet their fears for sometime is a firm commitment by the states north of the Vindhyas to improve governance in their states over a definite period of time. But these commitments will have to remain essentially unenforceable.

Southern states would not be wrong to argue- if you dislike that you do not have effective representation, one vote one value, perhaps you should ensure that your state governemnt invests in family planning, education, and poverty reduction measures. The inefficiency is not caused due to choices made by the southern states after all but because of choices made by governments in the northern states.

We do have a negotiated federal compact. It's in the Constitution. If the southern states are dragged to a negotiating table against their will to redraw that compact, you might have to prepare for them being willing to walk away altogether. And- it won't do to point out that there arent enough military capabilities in the southern states for them to be able to sustain independence. Thats just a naked threat to comply or be subject to a conquest. And when we are at that point of negotiation- we will might have already lost the Constitution anyway. We are a union of states. We are not a conquered people and their conquerors.

What about the most neglected constituency of all: the middle class? Can’t we have more seats from middle-class constituencies, considering that we pay all the tax in the country? In my view, all the top 15 cities in India should have 30% of all Parliamentary seats. And that will also balance north-South representation.

I really dislike the fatalistic attitude on display here. One would think that general category middle class students from lowly ranked colleges never get anywhere but its patently untrue. Your career options are what you make them. I know folks who went to- christ or CLC and ended up at ivy league schools with scholarships and I know folks who became famous litigators and folks who worked their way up the corporate ladder and are partners now.

You wont get any of that stuff handed to you. But if you start and work hard theres really no reason why you cant eventually get to the top of your field.

It will likely depend on you college + practice are (corp / litigation). Campus hires receive uniform pay 16 for noida, 18 for Delhi (including bonus). If you are a PPO hire, you might end up getting as low as 70k pm for disputes and 80k pm for corporate. You will only know your retainer amount on the day you get your first pay cheque.

I have been researching on this for a bit, some says it adds alot of perspective in understanding some say its worth the hype. I am also exempted from SQE 2 examinations (if i apply). Need to start reading more, need to add discipline by and through an exam hence this question. Thanks alot!

Even the most ardent supporter will have to admit that NLIU has fallen behind many of the law schools it was once clearly ahead of, or at par with. It’s been a story of neglect by the admin and also the state government, which has wasted crores setting up a tier 4 NLU in Jabalpur when it could have used the same funds to upgrade its existing tier 2 NLU and spring it back to tier 1.

Can NLIU ever bounce back?

Then how did he become a judge and get a transfer from Allahabad to the most prestigious HC in the country?

hi, I passed my +2 in 2024 and I moved abroad but realised that doing law in another country is so lengthy and not much worth it so I came back and now thinking to give clat this year but I am 19 rn so if I drop for clay then I will be 20.5 next year while going in law school. and the topmost option for me right not to get into decent school is NMIMS otherwise slsp or Nirma and other needs either entrance test or clat. The trigger for this post is the GNLU suicide. Even without this case, we cannot deny there is a mental health epidemic in a national Law universities. There are many reasons for that: too much competition over grades and jobs, toxic seniors and batchmates, lack of genuine friends and relationships, and depression from social media.
