NLS needs to seriously reconsider the kinds of electives it’s offering. And if they are rigorous enough. It seems like there’s an informal quota system with At least 1-2 courses every term on gender, at least 1-2 courses on caste, 1 course or maybe two if you’re lucky on private law. To be fair there are always a couple of what seems like rigorous courses on constitutional law. But identity is not the only prism through which we can see the world. There are very few elective courses that deal with class , labour, technology, medicine, regulation etc and even few that would take an interdisciplinary / philosophical approach to studying categories like crime, evidence, corporation etc.

Do your students need courses every single term on queer theory ? Is that because your students don’t study or are stupid or because your teachers don’t know anything else or because ideological indoctrination requires repetition ?

And I don’t think it would be indoctrination if these courses were rigorous and seriously dealt with opposing view points. But just looking at how the courses are constructed - and who they are taught by- it’s clear that there are no big debates or questions expected. Only conformity. The law school once had a vibrant atmosphere where people disagreed with each other about everything and still were friends, where you expected verbal fisticuffs and drama in the classroom. Bms college of law is one of the worst. They mint for ur monetary worth and there's not a single good thing about that college. If u are from middle class family God help u. Only a handful of Faculty will actually teach you stuff rest all of them read the bare act and ask u self study urself. I know many of you will say self study is good for students. Honestly - with the academic culture the way it is now- and the terrible way students behave. Almost everyone who can leave academia to go do something else will. The job simply isn’t what it used to be ten years ago. Ten years ago students competed to do well in class, tried to work with and

impress professors so they could get LORs. They were ambitious and motivated and keen to grasp at the opportunity to attend a good university. Now students sit back in class look at their phones, don’t read and it seems are only there to judge you should you commit a wrong think or a faux pas. They behave like judges before they’ve learnt a line of law. And they might never learn it given how ubiquitous gptfraud is. The breakdown of the teacher student relationship turns teaching into a chore. And if I had to do a chore of a job why on earth would I or anyone else do it for so little pay as teaching affords ?

I want to know if these writing competitions have any utility. I do think so because such a competition entails deeper research and articulation of legal thought, and maybe even better writing skills. Still, I'm looking for reassurance, I guess, from more qualified professionals and law students.

I moved to a T2 firm in January and am on probation for 6 months. I know for a fact that my immediate manager is not happy with my performance, since he has brought it up a few times. I am hardly being staffed on projects, even when other team members are quite overloaded with work. I am about a year into the profession, and feel like they are setting unreasonably high standards which are not feasible to achieve.

By the way, and please respond only if you are comfortable, why does NLSIU select so few in its PhD programme while leaving more than half of its advertised vacancies unfilled? Last year alone, they only took 1 our of 4 vacancies in law and 2 out of 3 vacancies in the interdisciplinary stream? Is this normal? Or is there a crisis somewhere?

Having worked in-house (MNC and PSU), I would recommend that you opt for a law firm in the beginning and then move in-house around 3-4PQE. Most no of opportunities are open at a given time for this experience bracket and fetch you comparable CTC (ofcourse you will be subject to tax structure and hence expect a dip in your in-hand salary). Consider moving to FMCG or IT sector. A big no for Pharma/Chemical sector, they wont even pay you the industry average.
