Hey everyone! So I have just begun my internship at a boutique firm in Mumbai known for M&A work. To give some context, I am from one of the top T-2 Nlu and my other co-interns are from well known private unis (not Jgls). It's been some days since the start of internship and I don't know for what reasons, I am not being allotted any work since the start let alone quality work. I have asked from my associates multiple times for assisting them from my end as well. However, my co-interns are readily being handed down work by these associates, though that too isn't much.

I have begun to think that since almost all of them are Non-Nlu people they might be biased against me for their personal reasons. I am not sure if this is really true or just my hunch. I am hoping to find some really genuine advice to get out of this situation and perspectives from people here.

Ps - I had readily introduced myself to all associates however there was no such initiative from my co-interns. Secondly, I am in my penultimate year and the others are in their final year.

The term assessment intern used by them is misleading. Saw an intern who had been there for 5 months in a hybrid role with no guarantee that he/she will be absorbed. Additionally, many assessment interns don’t show up on their first day, and we all know why. You will be assigned to team where you have no prior experience, so sending them your CV and video won't help, as they don’t even review them and assign you team on their own whim. Wasted a month there, and I can’t even include it on my CV because it negatively impacts my GC/transanctions consistency. Just imagine me trying to explain in an interview why I interned in this team which i am not even interested or am gonna pursue in future. TIP- better leave asap, save yourself time by doing assessment somewhere else

Why did the faculty like Dr. Anindita Jaiswal or Sarasu leave NLS? Even if it is lien. Many younger ones joined and left since he took over. Why is the faculty discontent in NLSIU can someone explain?

I want to know because the conversation in this post seems to make Sudhir the God of all VCs and legal education system must adhere to what he says. If something like Sudhir is done in NLUD, would ANY exisitng faculty remain here? Would the Delhi Government behave same as the Govt there in Karnataka? What am I missing?

Arrange a protest to get her to work with the student body? ▮▮▮ She has transferred a senior Professor , made another one leave, and another senior professor says she just stays of her way.

What do you think will happen to us if we protest? These professors that she has gone after are experienced in their fields and leaving GLC won't cause them much harm, but us? If she comes after us, our entire career will be in jeopardy.

Thats true the students should focus on studying rather than such stuff. Also the principal is academically qualified in every way for such a job. As students we should respect that. In addition to what we all know ,have heard or witnessed, the principle is the epitome of castism and communalism. I have came across news and have personally met students who were denied NOC for internship due to cast and religion at the same time somone from a higher cast was given the same.

She is genuinely is propoganda Maschine in herself. Which propoganda is quite well known to each and every student of GLC, including those supporting her. In pursuance of the same two other cultural committee (Gujrati and Urdu) are no longer functional, even their nominal presence is absent.

She despise even marathi speaker doing anything other than cultural fest that is why Marthi Moot Court Association has not been able to organise a single moot court competition.

The college has failed to organise SC visit, Delhi Study Tour, Alumni Meet.

There is a registered Alumni Association of the college someone who knows who whose should contact them. Seems our Alumni too have abandoned us.

The college governing council must make a note and so do Alumni of this no longer prestigious college that there is still time, college can still be saved, debate discuss dialogue should be the prime key. Delegates should be sent to Ministers, UGC and BCI.

Anyone who is having enough political support or can muster political support shall start agitation why wait, if VC of RGNLU could be changed, many more things can happen. And yes a curse to AdHoc students council, we need a Full autonomous and powerful and functional students bar association.

Completely agree with every single point my friend, not to mention her pathetic treatment of a very senior, beloved, and esteemed professor Iqbal Panjwani. Panjwani ultimately left the college after teaching for 50 years. Those who are in the know, know that he joined GLC very shortly after the famed Prof. Pithawalla. While leaving, he made this remark, "50 years of relationship with the college was destroyed by her in 50! seconds".

Look I feel GLC is a government institution and blaming a person entirely for the affairs is really wrong. And calling someone incompetent is just too extreme and a narrative building exercise in my opinion. There are lot of people involved in the decision making.

Also since everyone is focusing on the negatives let me highlight the positives since everyone coin has two sides and even on earth its not dark every where at all times there is sunlight!! The college provides a great experience of academic and extracurricular education.

Till now the teaching has been quite insightful and student friendly! There is also flexibility for those with jobs and other commitments.

Faculty is also approachable!

Students are interactive, helpful and engaging!

Job opportunities are also plenty!

However it might be more skewed towards the Five year LLb course compared to 3 year as far as I have heard since firms prefer 5 year students.

But overall the journey has been great till now!

1. Programmes are conducted on a regular basis for students to develop an interest in law.

2. As far as I have seen almost all the committees are actively engaged in different activities most of the time.

3. The canteen and other infrastructure is being developed. Look i feel students need to have some street smartness. Its a construction activity. It definitely takes some time so please be calm and let things happen and once that will be ready obviously it will be for the benefit of students

4.New courses are being introduced like certificate courses on Direct and Indirect tax. I have a first hand experience of that and they are amazing.

5. The library is also accessible and open for students to sit and study. This is not a school that we should expect spoon feeding for every single thing. We hopefully are grownups thus we should focus much more on studying.

6. Also the students portal is now made open so we can discuss whatever the complaints are with the principal directly. So rather than debating it here that has the most potential to yeild a solution on the effectiveness and efficacy parameter.

7. As far as i have interacted with the Principal she was very helpful and interactive. Also she was patient in listening all doubts and problems. Also she is approachable and never discards students and very much open to feedback.

So i feel we are grown up students and we should stop this cry baby mindset and seek help on a website that shall do nothing. Rather focus on positives. Also what i have noticed is that students actively enjoy participating in these programs and activities but on the other hand put blame on one person. This somewhere sounds like hypocrisy. And the internship part is i feel a subject of debate. Since what internships give u is a certificate for doing clerical level stuff rather than actual learning. It might also be positive. Most importantly i feel people are happy when things go according to them but hate when it goes against them. There are international students as well. Look i have been a student of engineering and the principals there dont even interact with students. Atleast the principal here is open to feedback. My experience has been great till now

Government Law College has been a goal for many law aspirants since decades but only till late have we started seeing its decline. The top comment in this thread does talk some sense when describing the bleak status of GLC today and the desolate conduct of its employees in managing the institute. It is important to note however that the employees ( office staff, teaching faculties, administrative start, advisories, etc.) are mechanical components of a larger system ( calling them tools would be derogatory so this was the closest I can get ). Severing the head from the rest of its body will not guarantee a better functioning ( for the oblivious, I am referring for the several demands in this thread wanting to vacate Asmita Vaidya from her office ). Asmita Vaidya is at an important position in this institute and mere vacation of her from her offices will do us no good, instead we have to preach to her wisest counsel in an organised concert, that could be only achieved when we as students, maximum capacity, have a mutual agreement regarding our agendas, and then approach AV to change the state of affairs. Do help me out in outlining more issues in following replies and/or reframing the ones I lay down in this reply.

Issue 1: The Committees

It was the contention of the top comment that some committees are unnecessary in a law college, but NAAC accreditation would be significantly lower had we not had the Cultural Committee or the Marathi Mandal. When we read GLC do we really forget its identity as a college? It is not merely a law institute. Fests are important to a college as important as its academics and ancillary co-curricular activities. Its Maharashtra, why not a Marathi Mandal that handles the vernacular side of collegiate fests? It would be subjective and redundant to restrict our views to arguing on the individual capability of Committees. The only takeaway from this issue should be the Principal's conduct with the Committees and her biased nature towards some. The Senior Cores of the respective Committees alongwith the Student Council should remind the Principal of their necessity in this College and that too with the statistics they need to back themselves up. If the Principal still persists on such biased conduct then the Committees and the student should take it up with her superior authority.

Issue 2: Corruption in GLC

Corruption and Government institutes are oftentimes synonymous, although we should not be assumptious in dealing with them and nor can we turn a blind eye simply by labelling the staff of GLC as a "lost cause". If we have the statistics then we demand an explanation for the unexplained revenue and lack of reasoning then allows us two routes ( do correct me if I'm wrong ), a police complaint or a complaint to a higher authority. Corruption is another evil in society and has to be dealt with as they come. Student Council's shoulders are heavy with yet another responsibility but alas that's the job description.

Issue 3: Handling Internship and Attendance

One of the most important bullet points an interviewer notices on your résumé is the longevity of your internship and they have their rightful reasons for the same. However the world outside has unrealistic demands from Law students and these are often made to work like a clerk but on the pay of a Guard. There is rampant exploitation in the corporate field for young pre-lawyers. At the end of this issue I will affix a link or two regarding one Supreme Court regarding the decrepit status-quo of the current generation of lawyers and their approach towards this field. For those who wish to know more do look up Justice Abhay S. Oka's speech on the Luthra Memorial Moot Court Competition. To continue with the issue, and I am venturing into a controversial area, since the students are wishing to intern earlier than is thought of by MU ( 4th Year was the standard ipso facto of its early morning classes ) then the classes should be conducted early morning, leaving the students with untethered time for their internship and personal indulgement/s. 3rd Year might be the correct time for the students to begin early morning lectures to match their résumé needs. Simultaneously, an appeal with the state Bar Council to issue parameter guidelines for offices offering internships should be placed. It is the practice of corporates and offices to hire interns on no salary or a sub-par salary whilst making them work full hours or even overclock to meet the Office deadlines. The State Bar Council has the appropriate authority to look into such matters and can also issue guidelines and/or refer this matter to the appropriate authorities for further deliberation. However this can not be a one student job and as I have previously mentioned, a concert of students is required for effective dealing with this issue.

That's middle school logic. If you did go to the best institutions in the world, you would know that not all the teachers are good at 'conveying knowledge'. Adult students make their own efforts instead of sitting and waiting for spoonfeeding. There are good teachers, there are teachers who will improve but a mature student will find ways to learn from all of them.

Literally, law school is the place for theory. A student may be too interested in acquiring skills to be interested in getting an education. Being a professor is not a 'public role'. These people didn't run for election. They are just offering a service to people who don't respect them or their privacy. The problem with this website is that it allows people who know nothing about education to come and hold forth about it.

Correction - started by 2 ex-Trilegal lawyers (non-partners). Now onto the firm, both the founders are quite nice, and so is Nidhi, the third partner who joined a couple of years back. However, the firm lacks a solid mid-level, leading to over-reliance on the partners, and at times it becomes too much for them to handle. And at times associates with 1-2 years PQE have to work with little to no supervision, which is not ideal. And the work for some can get a bit monotonous - for example doing retainer commercial contracting work for some clients - quite templatized and boring after a point.

Young person - there are no guarantees for anything. Your career is in your hands, so feel free to work hard and try and make something of it, or go chill and see where that takes you. Your call entirely.

My problem with your post is that you assume that someone saying that hard work is necessary equates to toxicity. It does not.

There are many of us 'oldies' who have worked really hard for 20+ years, and this has involved many instances of cancelled plans at the last minute, missing out on parties and birthdays and other fun events, sometimes letting down our loved ones, seeing acquaintances drift away, bouts of anxiety and depressive behaviour, and many other 'sacrifices'. We are also very aware that we would not have been able to get to where we are now without this hard work. In many fields (including law), if you want to be successful professionally, this will be the price.

You can choose that this is not what you want, that you want to prioritize personal time, and that is ok.

Do also be aware that, by the time people turn 35 or 40, professional achievements (and consequently, financial position and ability to provide for the family, send the kids to good schools, go on family holidays, have a nice house) tend to mean more to many people than having attended a few additional concerts or seen many movies or hung out with buddies. It's just that this occurs much later, and right now you will not be able to visualise this stage of your life. Again, this is just a perspective and the ultimate decision on how you want to work and live your life is yours. Just stop thinking that hard work is toxic.

Then you should work at a senior advocates office or a busy chamber. Then you will understand what urgency means. Problem is thinking too high of oneself. Seriously dude, litigation is a tough practice area. You seriously don't even have an idea how a busy chamber works. Idk if you are aware, most senior advocates wake up early in the morning and work till late night. Their chamber work accordingly. Their juniors work accordingly. So is it toxic, slavery and what not? Either you don't even practice litigation or are just being an ostrich.

Hi, I spent around a year at TL, Bombay. While I left to litigate, if I ever had to go back to a firm it would be TL.

I felt there was a proper collegiate atmosphere and that I could approach anyone with any questions I had.

For all the criticisms the firm gets (and I've had my share of problems / whining too), I think the firm does have fantastic, competent people across levels.

Things may have changed in the last 3 years, but I do not think that culture would have eroded substantially.

If you get BITS with some scholarship, take it. It's being run like Jindal 2.0, and the admin is very active in placing students in internships. The quality of students is fine.

NMIMS is OK but it's sometimes run like a school. The admin is extremely conservative in their approach.

I'm writing this post upon being stuck in my career.

Currently i'm working with an advocate, I have extensive experience in arbitration, appearance before various courts. I'm able to manage the entire arbitration disputes by myself. I can calculate claims, prepare the entire pleadings, admission and denial, evidence and arguments. I can review contracts and prepare legal opinion for government clients. I mean there is much more too it, but, i'm stuck at this place in Uttarakhand. I'm wondering if i can enter a tier 1 or tier 2 law firm to escalate my career further because i have worked enough in item rate contracts, turn key contracts pertaining to infrastructure development, power infrastructure development and supply.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance during in this period of dire need of mine.

The first overall is nice except a few teams led by ▮▮▮ (like ▮▮▮). ▮▮▮ team is possibly the worst is what I saw during my internship, specially that one ▮▮▮. The exposure is good, they have big clients on their roll. The entry level pay is 30k. There is no pay parity as such. The ▮▮▮ (▮▮▮) is a true gem.

Where should I intern this smer? Which firms are looking to hire for disputes? What are some realistic places for me to apply to convert the internship to PPO? I dont have much time and want to allocate my breaks meaningfully

I hear the team is small, the SA is leaving. They only have one SA now. What is this? Another Lala Firm with 20% transactional work and 80% GenCorp/ Employment Advisory/ Fund Formation/ any other work they can get on their hands which may be close to be called as Gen Corp? OR Is this one of those underdog boutique firms with decent work (80% transactions) where you can learn for a year or so and switch to T1.

The team is relatively small for handling so many VC transactions as they claim to.

Hi, I am planning to switch my current role in a boutique firm. I have almost 2 years of decent experience in M&A/PE/VC work. However, all the job openings that I am coming across are for B&F and Capital Markets. While I understand a bit of B&F, but I have not worked on it a lot. I have zero experience in CM. I am willing to put in the work to learn B&F, possibly because I understand debt to be close to how equity transactions work. I know firms would not hire me at A2 without prior experience in the field.

I am confused what to do. I have no good offer in my hand for M&A/PE/VC and then there is this ambiguity regarding B&F and Capital Markets. Any suggestions? Please do not shoot me down for this, looking for genuine advise.

Whatever they want. My colleges get paid different rates based on how effectively the firm has manager to whittle down their offered retainers. If you’re home grown you may have some luck but mostly not since they have different hidden bands and by the time you find out “teri band already baaj chuki hai” (pardon my French)

I am a second year student at a upper t2 NLU. I am currently in the top 5 of the class rankings. Got 81% and 87% in in 10th and 12th respectively. I want to start preparing for the LSAT and don't know where to begin. Also would this ba llb serve as an advantage over other applicants in USA. I honestly just want a t25 or t30 law school. Visa won't be a problem.
