1. Are people not allowed to comment upon matters pending in court? No, they are. There is no law restricting it. So, what's the issue if Samay Raina comments on it?

2. Is it unlawful for a person to travel abroad and comment? No, the rights of an Indian citizen under Article 19(1)(a) are not limited by territory.

3. But, let's probe further: Can the court direct that someone not exercise their right to freedom of speech & expression? No. Only the Parliament can, by virtue of a law - which would fall the exceptions of Article 19(2). But in absence of any law, the court cannot prevent an Indian citizen from saying whatever they want (whether obscene or not). This too has been clarified by the SC numerous times.

4. Did Samay say anything wrong, obscene or contemptuous in Canada? Based on the news report, it does not seem so. By no stretch of imagination can it be said that Samay's show in Canada was disrespectful to the Supreme Court. The institution is Supreme enough that it cannot be put into disrepute by any tom-dick-and-harry, let alone a wannabe chess player/lousy comedian. Not unless the court itself takes offense at it and actually turns the public's eyeballs onto those comments.

In these circumstances, to say that a comedian is being "oversmart", in my very humble & respectful opinion, is just being "oversensitive", and ought to have been avoided. Let matters be decided by the law; there is no need for a future CJI to flex muscles (though, thankfully, these were only verbal remarks and no muscles were actually flexed by way of orders - but then there's the question of why should any oral observations of this nature be made when neither the said party is before the court nor is there any legal issue regarding it).

It is evident the archaic form of 'respect' provided to the Courts of India have got to the heads of your lordships. Look at how the Executive and Legislature remain at everyone's crosshairs 24/7. Why should the Judiciary, which directly impacts the lives of every citizen and even non-citizen in the nation, not be exempt. Unlike our Judges, at least we can choose our politicians and then criticize them as well!

From what I know, the pay is quite similar at equivalent levels and experience, however, how much do the activities & roles differ? M&A lawyers often help in business modelling, due diligence, checking financials (then valuation) and also regulatory & compliance matters, which is exactly what M&A bankers do, excluding the legal part (regulatory & compliance). Capital/Equity-Debt Market lawyers advise and assist in raising capital through IPOs and/or raising capital through loans and/or bond issuances, which is again, exactly what bankers do. What is the real difference? if any.

I have seen many seniors of mine get into corporate law because they feel that they will meet big-shots and gain their support, which is crucial for them to succeed in the future. Their plan is that they work at a corporate firm for 3-4 years and build a good connect with some executives, managers and businessmen, so they can build their own firm or business with their connects as clients. Does it really work out that way? Or is it no good?

Sorry to offend anyone here, but the influence of local M politics (you can use your head and figure out what the M stands for, and its not Muslim) has finally pierced the prestige of GLC. From several years, we have seen notable legal luminaries stop their visits to the College and the intersection of M state politics with the educational system here is clear. For God knows what reason, the entirety of Mumbai University has suffered since the past 2 decades. While DU retains its status as a frontrunner despite many political issues and clashes, MU has suffered. The downfall of GLC is the final straw. Hell, I've heard from associates that even DU has started hammering students for low attendance now. Sad state of affairs for historically significant colleges like these. GLC needs to sack their administration ASAP. Just sacking the principal and keeping the position vacant would do good to GLC, as student bodies are self-sufficient and seem to work independently anyways. At least a vacant principal's seat will not jeopardize the already-crumbling repute even more.

It is impossible to suggest that the management is in anyway interested in the affairs of the college. This college couldn't even call an electrician to fix the fans and lights, but acts with such haste to set up some gym equipment and do basic renovations to impress the NAAC team.

The student committees recieve less money than promised and are always told about how the college is low on cash.

They have now implemented a shoddy digital attendance system that doesn't even work properly. Moreover, previously, teachers would forge attendance. Now, teachers tell students they have no time for a lecture so give Attendance and leave.

There are very few decent classes to conduct lectures in. There is either construction work going on in classrooms, or the windows are all boarded up, or are so dirty that even the teachers request us to search for a different class.

And let's not forget the professors themselves. There are very few professors who are actually competent. Most are quite incompetent and do not know how to teach. There are some who are disinterested in teaching and prefer to talk about their ideological/political beliefs, some beliefs that reading the textbook of their own subject disproves, and they give good marks to only those who they perceive to believe in their beliefs.

Then there are those who act so vindictively towards students as if they have a personal vendetta against us. And then there are professors who will give you poor marks in viva/presentation for no reason, I've had a semester where this specific professor have most students between 14-18 and only a few students got about 20.

I even had a professor who, during vivas, required to quote the definitions from the acts that they are written in. One of my friends has wanted to work in arbitration and has interned in that direction since the very first year. After asking a few questions on arbitration, the professor declared that since he didn't quote the definitions from the acts, he will give him no marks for viva and proceeded to grade him only on his assignment.

Why would any student want to join such an institution. And from what I've heard, and opposition to how things are going seems to result in vindictive action from the administration. Even senior professor Ratho wasn't immune to this(I expect you guys already know about that case).

GLC in my opinion is done. If anyone you know wishes to join the institution, recommend that they don't. For those who are students in GLC, keep your head down and just graduate unless you are willing to risk being targetted by professors and the administration

I'm an ex student of GLC, batch of 2024. GLC staff is incompetent, lazy and straight up rude. They don't do any of their jobs properly. Our batch is facing difficulties in getting enrollment in any state bar council outside of Maharashtra. Because the college has not completed its enrollment with the BCI. GLC only had validity till the year 2020 and not beyond. We have been trying to get our enrollment since September 2024 and the college staff kept ignoring us and refused to help. Especially Siddesh Sir from the admin department. He kept disconnecting our calls and said that we can't do anything.

The OP has gone ad hominem multiple times, even without which the point of the post could have been equally well put across. I am guessing that's the reason the mods have erred on the side of caution. Please note that it is good to highlight the institutional problems and fallings in this platform in order to get your voice heard, but you cannot remain anonymous and individually target any person including your faculty members. LI can be brought to trouble by those people if that happens. Just to clarify, I'm in no way associated with GLC, and I encourage the students to speak up about these problems. Just saying this as a veteran LI user who has figured out the platform's stance over time.

Yet another rage post. This has been the situation for a long time now. Principal, Professors, Administration does not care. Whether students cry or die, they are gonna get their salary credited at the end of the month from Government. Nothing is gonna change.

Now it's our responsibility to caution all the young minds about the situation. Please avoid GLC. Don't come here with high (or any) hopes.

Pasting this from one of my letter to principal -

"Attendance - the attendance does not get updated regularly. It is redundant to put mandatory attendance on final year students as they should be free to intern. For e.g.- Symbiosis Law School, NIRMA, etc has system of last year internships.

Faculty - The main concern with GLC is substandard faculty. Students wouldn't have a problem to attend college if the college had quality professors. We feel that we can study more at internships than at college. The substandard education will result in substandard students and bad alumni base. We will soon deplete in good alumni base and face a regressive phase.

Lack of communication - It is important to have communication between students-professors-principal. The principal lacks prompt decision making and when any decision is taken, they are not communicated with professors. It makes the attempt of students vague and result in frustration and sense of disappointment towards college.

Other- Principal needs to take responsibility and bring swift changes whenever needed. She shall address students and not delay them. Students do not feel inclusive. They are put out of loop. There cannot be a college environment unless there are professors and administratives who can understand foster the environment. The administration needs to study new and better college structures, such as those followed by NLUs and implement them immediately.

The gradual decline of college is evident with aggravated behaviour of students towards college's actions, such as various petitions filed in courts. Lesser and lesser placements shows the declining interest of Law Firms. One cannot find an alumni from recent years or current students who can give positive remarks regarding college. We feel very much disassociated with the college.

Last and sincere request, please don't transform the college into a school. Let student's voice be heard and make positive transformations. It will be a matter of time when GLC will be just another City College if it does not keep up with changing times."

Everything that glc stood for has just faded away. We have to wait for hours and hours to meet with the principal for something simple as getting her signature. They expect us to attend lectures, and we would be happy to do so, if only they atleast provide us with a decent teaching staff and basic classrooms. The entire college is under construction and i have no idea why this had to be done right in the middle of a semster.

I have never seen a college that is out to get it's students like this. They make studying in this college impossible.

Hi, as an ex student this is incredibly sad and heartbreaking. I have always raved about the autonomy GLC gave its student bodies and the benefits we reaped. AV’s behaviour is going tank the institution and her permanent position is a problem. Think students should try and arrange a protest/ think of ways of getting her to work with the student body instead of just promoting the two clubs you mentioned above. While spreading this awareness is a good idea, try fighting it.

Agreed! Asmita Vaidya is the ▮▮▮ stigma to this prestigious institution. When see the list of Principals on the wall near lift, you will automatically realise her ▮▮▮. ▮▮▮. And another stigma is ▮▮▮ (and I am deliberately not ▮▮▮).

The Principal ▮▮▮, she asks to get the bonafide application signed by all professors and if you don’t have adequate attendance bonafide certificate will not be issued. ▮▮▮ she don’t understand the very purpose of the bonafide certificate, why do you need professors sign, attendance for it?

▮▮▮ did not even allowed students to appear for Presentations and Vivas due to lack of attendance, and students were scored out of 20 and not out of 40. When we complained of the same to Principal, after begging to allow us to score properly, ▮▮▮ agreed to conduct internals for remaining 10 marks. ▮▮▮ she deliberately made it so difficult and conducted along with ▮▮▮ (another stigma). The questions asked had connection neither to the topic nor to the subject.

I am seeing students from Tier 2/3 colleges are scoring better than us. NLUs, ILS and other college students are performing better in competitions and winning them. Their college provides research platforms, mentors, they even conduct practice sessions before going to such competitions.

I came to GLC with lot of hope, but with my hope this institution is going down the line with speed of light. Whatever “izzat” is left is because of the meritorious students who are self studying for exams, self learning all the skills, trying to intern at good places, working their butt off to make it in this profession. All my batchmates/friends are fade up of these people. There are no good faculty left. And whoever is there, like Daswani sir and Pithawalla sir are also fade up of the principal, ▮▮▮.

Change in the administration and a competent Principal only will change the current situation.

Wish there was some way we could call this nonsense out rationally, reasonably, calmly, point-by-point and not anonymously. What's the point of a so-called "marketplace of ideas" if there cannot be a genuine clash of ideas as a fair fight? It is about sharp analytical ability, the ability to distill thousands of pages into few lines of legal issues, and for a law firm lawyer, great commercial understanding and numeracy skills as well. The best lawyers are the ones who write the most simply and convey all issues effectively. Yeh sab kya bakwaas laga rakha hai - human is your adversary and all. In literally whatever field you choose to work in, an adversary will always be another human.

Because if you think about it, the conditions that lead to mental health problems were WORSE in previous generations. They got much less pay, had poorer parents and didn’t get luxuries that we all take for granted (e.g. AC in the home, Uber, Netflix etc). They were also more sexually repressed.

Look mate. Let me give you a perspective, based on meeting one Amity graduate, and one graduate only. I once knew an Amity graduate who went for a reasonable quality foreign master's in law (LLM) degree (full disclosure: I myself was doing that same degree at that time). That LLM's admissions requirement is that you have performed above average (if not spectacularly) on the academic front during your undergraduate years, but their admissions staff didn't really have all that fantastic an understanding of what an above average grade from certain Indian universities meant, so this Amity graduate was admitted. She was one of the intellectually most under-quality students in our entire cohort (it is only a small level of liking for her on a personal level that prevents me from labelling her as the least bright). Not kidding. I had almost zero idea about Amity law school before I knew this person and just thought, 'Oh, she's from the uni others love to hate on'. After meeting her, I must say it will be slightly harder for me to look at other Amity graduates without any form of preconceived assumption (though I promise to try). This is because she was finding it hard to cope with a level of coursework that was difficult enough to keep the rest of us on our toes, but not to give us fits. There were, as I say, other Indians on that LLM, including from DU and NLUs, who managed fine; she didn't, however, and she admitted that the reason was the substandard quality of her undergraduate education. I hope that this is helpful in terms of looking at your choices. Take this into account with what others have said or will say about Amity graduates who did other things after taking their law degrees.

Totally agree. As an aspiring teacher, I have been really conflicted to join academia now seeing how poorly students talk. Imagine walking into a class after reading all this. Students have become teachers of their teachers. While no profession is above scrutiny, the manner in which educators are discussed betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of their role and challenges. Teaching itself is a life long learning process. But in online spaces and informal discussions here, we often see a growing tendency to reduce professors to caricatures: outdated, disconnected, or merely obstacles rather than enablers of learning. Such narratives fail to acknowledge the structural limitations within which they operate: e.g. underfunded institutions, overwhelming administrative burdens, or the ever-increasing expectation to publish at a pace that leaves little room for genuine intellectual engagement. I totally believe being mentored by many of the silent workers that while teachers are not infallible, they are indispensable.

Instead of anonymous posting, students and disgruntled faculty should formally complain if they have issues or are unhappy with their colleagues. Defaming people anonymously is cowardice.

If you're in a public role, you open yourself to the scrutiny of people. A person may have Post Doc from the best university of the planet, but it means nothing if they are unable to convey their knowledge to the students. A person may be an expert in the field, but s/he may be too much theory oriented for a law school.

It's good to debate and discuss openly, rather than talking in hush hush tones on WhatsApp groups.

Moreover, the National Law University Delhi (NLUD) has experienced a tremendous surge over the past two years, marked by some spectacular performances from the faculty, students, and administration. This has resulted in the establishment of a UNESCO chair, an International Arbitration chair, and various courses, such as the WIPO course and an insolvency course, which saw participation from all NLUs, including NALSAR and others.

Additionally, the university has set up an incubation center, an AI unit, and a SOAS project. We have also appointed four world-class faculty members, among other achievements. As an alumna of this university, I can confidently say that NLUD is on its way to becoming the undisputed number one law school in the country. Rather than chest-thumping, try to draw a bigger line.
