I was in the same boat, decided to stick to Tier 2 for life, Tier 1 and the burnout not worth it.

One definitely will get paid less than T1, but the life, moments, and time you get, along with right to ownership of work, directly engaging with clients etc. is priceless.

You have one life, better to experience it rather than work 14 hours a day everyday to earn money you wont even like/enjoy spending. Not worth earning that much if the sowrd of additional work always hangs over you, even on leaves/holidays.

The solution is to have English as the national language and have everyone speak in English. Abolish the teaching of regional languages in schools. In any event, all the world’s most important scientific knowledge, fiction, cinema and music is in English (some perhaps in other European languages, but invariably translated into English).

As a student at NLS I would advise against joining NLSIU, the batch strength is too high as of now, you will be sitting and competing against a few hundred people for vacancies which might or might not be sufficient to cater to everyone, academics too at NLS are a different kind of a beast, all that for no job guarantee and an ungodly amount of stress, along with the new ten week trimester plan, not a good place to be if I am being very honest, I would suggest NALSAR over NLS any day of the week.

What makes up a strong CV is highly subjective, especially if you consider it from a recruiter's perspective. However, as far as my understanding and observations go, there are some common elements of a strong CV (one whuch is well suited for a job at a good law firm). (My opinion here is most relevant for the schools like NLS/NALSAR/NUJS. It may be true for others as well as a matter of general principle but please make sure to talk to your immediate seniors and 4th years/5th years too as my advice may be generic at some points.)

1. GPA/Grades: Maintaining a good GPA is crucial for a good CV. And a good GPA is not objective rather relative to your batch. If your GPA is in top 25% of the batch, I think that is good. Anything above that is excellent. People often overlook this, but more often than not, you CV itself is shortlisted based on your GPA. And I've people with very high GPA and nothing else in the CV land a very good job on Day Zero. So, focus on GPA.

2. Internships: Internships at T1 firms are most valuable. If you have narrowed down to a niche practice area and seek a job in that itself, try interning more in that area. Other than, generally if you have 2-3 good internships by your Day Zero along with a good GPA, you are going to be a strong contender for a job. This is specifically true in case of NLS or other top law schools where generally there is a higher number of willing recruiters on Day Zero. In case of other law schools, it would be wise to stay in touch with seniors who have secured a job to get tailored information.

3. Moots/Publications/Other Achievements: These achievements show your excellence and differentiate you from your peers. If you get a chance, don't shy away from participating in moots/debates/ADR activities. Participate for the sake of participating and in doing so you'll be able to enjoy the process and gain some experience that may help you later (for example in articulating something in your interview or as an area of common interest betwen you and your recruiter). If you win or secure a good position in any of these activities, it'll be a nice addition to your CV and might help in distinguishing your CV from others. And if possible, try getting atleast one paper in your area of interest published ata good place by the end of your law school course.

These are not sure shot ways of landing a job on Day Zero. I have seen people with a 'weaker' CV get a decent job. And I have seen people witha 'stronger' CV struggle. But tge above elements will, as a matter of general principle, work in your interest. Above all, if you aim to get a corporate job, try getting a PPO as this will save your time, effort and save you from participating in gruelling Day Zero process. In your second corp internship, try getting an assessment internship or if it's already a callback, even bettter. Communicate with your buddies/mentors that you are interested in working there and inquire aboutv vacancy and their interest in hiring. Be direct but not rude/offensive/ or give an impression that you are very needy. Hiring etc is also impacted by hiring pattern in that year and previous year. So all you can do is give your best and hope that everything else goes well.

Don't be very stressed as in the end you'll find that things will fall into place. Just be dilligent and trust and enjoy the process. You'll never get these years of your life back, so make sure that you dont exhaust yourself only in building CV. I hope i wasn't very idealistic and didn't scare you as that wasn't my intention. Be in touch with your seniors. I am sure you'll do good.

Discourse in India is either exagerration or obfuscation. In a country with little or no data, anecdotal experience is what passes for reasoning. The judge and soon-to-be CJI here figured that, him being from an agricultural background, he has an accurate and superior understanding of the situation. Now, of course, that is not true. But observe that even in elite and exclusionary institutions of India, this is what passes for intellectualism.

Absolutely worth it and you have the right attitude! Go for it! Why hoard money when the govt will loot it in the name of taxes and the value of the rupee will keep declining? And if there’s anything that COVID has taught us it is that life is short and uncertain, so we must live it it the fullest.

Think of it this way. This is a populous country. For every exam, you will find a large number of applicants. So every exam is already competitive. One way to differentiate between them could be to look at the common minimum threshold that an applicant needs to meet in terms of their preparation in order to achieve merit. In my own limited view, that threshold for law appears to be lower as compared for engineering. But bear in mind, this is only an observation on the level of preparation needed to achieve merit in either examination. And while my explanation here is qualitative, it would not be too difficult to collect relevant data in its support. Ultimately, we are all similar and different in many ways and there is no point in looking down at what we enjoy doing simply because others think they can do better than us. Good for them if they can! For there is nothing to compare between an incompetent engineer and a competent lawyer and vice versa.

Agreed. No one cares (or should care about NLS). It is a state university on the decline. The Karnataka State Government has not been able to create and nurture a single good university in the state (remember that IISc, IIMB, NIMHANS, etc. are all national/central entities) in the past 75 years. So why should NLS be any different?

Messiah is trying to build NLS into Apple. Create an ecosystem where once you opt for one thing, you are enticed by the second, and unable to refuse the third. Stay stuck in the ecosystem and not be able to get out of it because its too difficult to.

Make your choices carefully, aspirants. You don't want to be forced to stay stuck in one place when you might have better options elsewhere.
