You cannot have a coherent national identity when every decision is reduced to it job-related utility. It is ridiculous to argue against Hindi while arguing for English in the same breath. Why the false distinction? More people speak Hindi than English and yet you would rather prefer to learn English, a language which is anyway spoken by a small minority and is completely divorced from cultural traditions of all Indians. Why? Because it makes access to employment easier? So you are willing to sacrifice your own cultural identity just so that you can have a slightly easier life? It upsets you that there are regions in the country with greater population than yours and who are comfortable in speaking a single language and its associated dialects. But that is no reason to accuse them of imposing themselves upon you. It is a historical fact that the freedom struggle was primarily led by people in the central and northern Indian subcontinent while the political and economic elites in peninsular region were happy to piggyback on their coat-tails to achieve domination in their provinces. The region of Bengal has contributed immensely to freedom struggle but even they lack the kind of hatred that Tamil Nadu and its elite have against Hindi without reason. The state of Tamil Nadu is singular in its hostility to a single language today. The evidence for Hindi imposition is mostly anecdotal and consists of no more than a few errant public sector employees or a few uncharitable private folks who are always looking for a fight on any issue, including language. That is what gets picked up on news and over internet. A large majority is simply trying to make an honest living. Sometimes there can be misunderstandings over language but that is no reason to judge and condemn an entire community of its speakers. Learn whichever language you want. It is certainly not natural. It is imposed to a huge extent. Most of the PSUs and banks offering services demand that the customers speak in Hindi rather than their mothertongue. Public infra is being connected closely with Hindi even in states where Hindi is not the prevalent regional languages. People not knowing Hindi are being told to leave the country. Imposition does not only mean that you have to speak it on gunpoint. It is a simple argument. Hindi is the mother tongue of a group within the country. Nothing more than that. People not knowing it are not missing out on any great repository of knowledge etc. There is no reason why any Indian citizen will have to learn a third language other than their mother tongue and a common language. That common language should not be Hindi because that would give the group of people whose mother tongue is Hindi an unfair advantage. Hence it should be English especially given the usefulness of that language outside the country and it being the means to access a huge knowledge repository.

Thanks. It is nice to have the perspective of a current PhD student. In case you are familiar with PhD students (NLUD, NALSAR, NUJS, etc.) in other NLUs, can you draw a comparison with NLSIU in terms of coursework? Also, any idea where are the recently minted PhDs from NLSIU working at currently?

Many of the supervisors are not really domain experts regarding the subjects of the theses that they are supervising. Most of the coursework does not focus on the practical aspects of how to conduct various types of research and analysis of the data. Almost no insight into how to use tech for research ethically for instance, nor software for qualitative data analysis. Most problematic thing is that even if your thesis is deemed approved by your supervisor and external examiners, it is still up to the VC whether to pronounce it satisfactory, even for those subjects where he is nowhere near an expert, yet keeps sitting on those theses for months at end.

I saw that the discussion on NLS PhD was scattered over here. I thought I'll make a new thread specifically for it.

Pros:

1. Best supervisors (on paper ) : Sudhir has hired many good people, so you'll have good supervisors.

2. Quality: The final product that you'll have will be pretty good because of the rigor of the course.

3. Insights into working of NLS: You attend classes and you do some TAing or RAing. So you get a preliminary idea of how things work at NLS.

Cons:

1. Ever changing system: The rules and the system keeps on changing. Which rule will apply to you is mired in ambiguity.

2. Non responsive admin: There have been reports where people have mailed the university and heard back after an year or haven't heard back. Things are getting better on that front.

3. Extreme rigour of coursework: The coursework is extremely rigorous. A trimester of research methodology course, plus 2 other courses- core or elective, are essential to take. In addition, there's a requirement to become TA/RA or offer your own course.

I feel a lot of this could be done away with. There isn't a point of an year long coursework other than adding the stress. A person selected already has a good idea of the basics. Specific seminars on note taking, using research tools and statistics would be far more useful. Personal opinion.

4. Overworked supervisors: This creates a problem again. Everyone in NLS is overworked. It's just one subject to teach, but the rigour expected in the course is of a good level. And you've to finish it within 2.5 months. Plus, a lot of elements in a course now, like moots etc. make it even more rigorous. So, it will be a lot of time before your supervisor gets back to you.

I'm not getting into more controversial aspects of the PhD, because I feel that is an exception.

Besides that, I honestly dont think students are qualified to judge teachers. They dont know the subject, all they can judge is whether they like the person and whether they find class entertaining and fun. Most indian students wouldnt know rigor if it hit them in the face. and studies demonstrate huge biases in how different kinds of teachers are evaluated in student feedback. You want to evaluate teachers? Thats what VCs and deans are for! do spot evaluations, come sit in my classroom and tell me what im doing right and wrong, thats what universities abroad rely on to make tenure decisions.

I'm making a rhetorical point—teachers won't do it even when their students say and write and behave horribly because teachers are more mature and professional than that. Its a shame that students these days aren't parented or even expected to behave professionally at all. Universities die by doing this. The system is completely broken and disincentivises merit and academic excellence. Barring NLSIU, the faculty is mostly mediocre. When a rare good teacher with good qualifications comes along, he usually faces resentment from corrupt admin and colleagues. They also give him excess work and make him teach unrelated subjects. Then you have entitled and woke students demanding high grades for poor work. They also don’t pay attention in class and use AI for projects. Smartphones have fried their brains since childhood.

Why not go speak to the manager and ask how you can fix the situation? You can start by mentioning you notice the difference in work load between others and yourself and would like to take on something and also suggest that you will make a daily plan on whatever assignment she/he gives you and look forward to weekly feedback. Sometimes the easiest way is just to maturely address what most people don't like to talk about. Of course if you aren't able to make headway with this approach then maybe it is time to look.
