No. Like 95% not. Sorry the way we appoint Supreme Court judges in this country requires one to have great connections and a lot of luck and be exactly the right demographic at the right time. Most lower court judges also never see elevation to high courts. It would be a better tack to become a really really good litigator, get elevated to a high court and then try from there- but even if you became a really good litigator the rest will still take a lot of luck

Possible but improbable. One of the less-talked about consequences of the Collegium System in India is the complete destruction of federalism in the judicial branch. Judges of the Supreme Court look down upon their brothers and sisters in High Courts and who in turn look with nothing but scorn at their fellow judges in the district.

Could you tell us where you live? At the very least, you should aim to study in the capital city of your State as it will lilely give you access to better law offices for your internships and more people to build your network. A non NLU will not matter as much if you can maintain good grades and pursue quality internships.

Building networks involves meeting new people, finding common interests, and recognizing each other's value. You can do that in a library, a conference, a Moot Court, in a restaurant, on the metro, in a plane, on social media.. there are as many avenues of networking as there are people and activities around you.

To repeat after what other good folks have already said, DO NOT GIVE UP, dear fellow. Persuade and fight like hell. You must! This is not just about your prospective career. It is also about other challenges and opportunities that a bright individual like you will face in your life. If you let others dictate the path of your life today then will not just stop here and will keep harassing you to do their bidding till the end of time. Do everything you can and ensure that you do not become that person who, later in life, ends up regretting what they could have been if only they had fought harder and longer.

Is there nothing like Archbold Criminal Pleading, Evidence, and Practice in India that combines both criminal law and practice? If not, why is that so? Publishers could make a killing if they were to publish something like that. The closest thing to Archbold that I have been able to find is an old book by A.C. Your concerns are valid. And all one can say, without casting aspersions at the people in NLSIU, is that the paper is meant to test your critical thinking. The ideal way to prepare for this is to not rely solely on facts and theories but to also write in a way that is clear and analytical.

Yet despite all that, there is an element of luck that comes into play. Questions with subjects entirely unfamiliar to you may still come up. And the timespan of the written test does not provide you the luxury to rest for more than a few minutes before you try to change your strategy. You have to simply start from anywhere in the paper and anyhow.

Now add in the cost and duration of NLSIU’s admission process and it can be extremely frustrating for even the most promising candidates. It is also worth reflecting that they ask you to upload a research proposal at the stage of applying itself and then use the written test to short-list which makes very little sense given that only 125 people even applied in 2024 for Ph.D. admission at NLSIU. Having Junior Research Fellowship in Law and other social science disciplines does not exempt you from the written test either.

Can NLSIU improve their admission process? Yes. But that is something beyond our control here. In this respect, even NLSIU is not very different in its bureaucratic inertia than other universities in India. To repeat after Henry, “And there was nothing we could do about it.”
