Now, nepotism does exist, be it in chambers or when it comes to getting into corporate law firms. But at times connections come into play and may play a very detrimental role in your career.
In terms of pursuing a conventional career - litigation in the Supreme Court or High Court - yes connection, generational reputation, and financial backing can make your progress smooth. But as said it's not the only way to progress. Working hard and having the zeal to new challenges is what the profession demands.
Since this profession is very client-centric in nature, most of the time if not always you have to be at your toes, to meet your client's expectations. (goes both for conventional and corporate law firms).
When it comes to corporate law firms, the biggest challenge is controlling your emotions. As you get into law school, you will find that the majority of your colleagues have connections, which will make getting into law firms for internships a cakewalk. However, you may struggle. Don't get afraid of it. Just have a good CGPA and have a good participation and citation record (moot court competitions, debating, article publishing). People have even got jobs through connections, no doubt about that.
But always remember real progress starts in the Job itself, if you have the right knowledge and interest to work hard and smart, then you will go strides than your entitled batchmates.

There exists a compromising side of every profession and aspect of life. There is a bad in every opportunity, but it's on you which one you want to choose: the less bad or the worse.

In grade 11th , chose law for my career now i am scared after reading Li post and reddit replies that what happens to first gen lawyers i am genuinely intrested about studying law and making a career in it, but is it is true merit has no need in this field and nepotism is what matters.

I thought i can sustain with enough money and good lifestyle but all of these comments are now fking scaring me ..

While I do regret leaving T1 NLUs for NMIMS, he was once invited to one our events. Reached on time, extremely polite and humble, spoke to as many students as he could (individually). No arrogance, No snobby attitude, No "I look down upon you since you are an intern/law student" attitude.

He was delighted to judge all my colleagues on the basis of their merit rather than college. He informed us that he was looking for Khaitan & Co. to have Interns who know how to work and have fun at the same time. Some of us (without connections) got into Khaitan & Co. because he agreed to judge us on the basis of our CV rather than how grand was his welcome/treatment from our college.

He is one of those people who you know are humble just on the basis of how they speak to those who haven't reached their stature.

Days after vowing to "go to war" to defend the H-1B visas, tech billionaire Elon Musk on Sunday said the system, which is used to bring skilled foreign workers to the US, is "broken" and needs a "major reform".

Indian lawyers are eligible as well but if a candidate goes for LLM which as per me is a decorative degree and law does not come under stem opt so a person gets only one year to apply for H1B which itself is lottery based. People who go to Harvard/Columbia end up coming back to India, because USA law firms/companies want candidates who have done JD there itself.

Tech bros are what law bros think they will be when they graduate from a tier 1 to join a tier 1, realising pretty soon that they're at the bottom of the barrel in the corporate structure and are nothing more than corporate disposables. I have never understood how JGLS is not at par with NLUs already. If we have a pros and cons list made of either. Yes fees is almost double, but the education facilities and opportunities at JGLS far outgrows by huge margins even if compared to the top tier 1 NLUs. JGLS graduates have been placed at tier 1 law firms in india consecutively for a good time now. On the other hand NLUs no longer host the best faculties in the country, taken by JGLS again. NLUs have reservation that too in huge nos, this creates a huge disparity in student quality, which again i agree is not great at JGLS either but if you're at the top of the batch you get the best quality everything. The campus itself is crazy good at JGLS as well. Not to mention the insane differences in partner universities JGLS has NO NLU can even compete with JGLS in this criteria. NLS itself doesn't have even a single decent partnership with any decent university abroad. Whereas JGLS has partners with ivy leagues and some of the best law schools abroad.

I think there's a gap in reasoning when it comes to people in LI. Logically speaking NLUs are great options no doubt atleast the tier 1s are. No one getting tier nlu should choose JGLS over it until and unless they just hate the one they're getting.

Even BITSLAW has started working like JGLS. Even though not as great as JGLS, they have done a great deal within a 2 year span. Definitely impossible for any NLU to tackle other Law Schools at the pace they have done it.

SLS Pune is a great choice too, they have a good alumni base too. Yes they do have certain problematic section of students but the education isnt that bad.

People point out at various occasions how JGLS and other Private Colleges have a drug culture. I think its not only JGLS its every other NLU as well. TIER 1 NLUs included. There's every other student scoring and drinking.

Put up this with the proper authority at the college pointing out to any specific instance rather than writing this here. Under the new Administration, your complaint will be resolved in no time that you have yourself seen. Admin doesn't support any such mentality. It was the thing of the past when no action was taken. I don't find anyone from the junior batches so submissive that they put up with these kind of behaviour. And several complaints have already been resolved. So try it out

NLSBLR's editorial process is very intense and rigorous. It has a great student editorial body along with a strong team of peer reviewers. Although I have published a blog with them, the level of scrutiny my paper underwent was substantial. They place a strong emphasis on an analytical approach rather than a descriptive one in the paper. Every point or argument presented is subject to close examination, requiring proper substantiation with authoritative sources or an elaboration that demonstrates its relevance to the topic at hand.

NLSBLR also maintains a stringent standard for the structural integrity of the paper. The editorial board has a great understanding of how a paper should be structured, and they meticulously review every aspect of the submission—from the introduction to the conclusion. If a paper is accepted, it is typically conditional upon the author making the necessary revisions in accordance with the editorial board's comments. Overall, NLSBLR is very competitive and has one of the most high-quality publications.

One of the best places to write about corporate and commercial laws in India. A few of the people on the editorial board are really lazy though. I know this from personal knowledge. So I would suggest that you be in it for the long haul if you do decide to send your piece to BLR.

NLUD any day. Surviving 5 years in some back of the beyond jungle without access to any food delivery apps and social life outside campus will be hell. As far as opportunities go, NLUD has far better research centres and faculty but NALSAR corp placements may be slightly better. But this isn't 2010 anymore and NLUD has long since overtaken NALSAR in most areas.

And you have no iddea how to do logical argument, which clearly shows that you went to an in-the-toilet uni (or don't deserve a place at whichever uni you did land up in!). My logic is simple: not too many places in India offer a legal education quality worth writing home to mother about. That's it. You clearly are in one of the more numerous kind of places (where the legal education quality is so bad as to be one rung above nothing).

Anyone who didn't go to NLSIU, NALSAR, NLUD, GNLU, NLUJ, NUJS (maybe also add NLUO, HNLU, RML if you feel generous) is not worth bothering with. That many options, you can't cry about. I thought we weren't infected here on LI by the western hard left mentality of "you are forever a victim of your circumstances?".

Hello. I am a A0 working in a T1. I wanted to pursue LLM in the US after a year or two. I came across a bunch of threads on LI on how pursuing MBA has more job prospects than LLM in US. I would like to know if a person who graduated law in India, be employed as a lawyer in the US after MBA, as several posts on LI suggest.

Please let me know if you or anyone you know, have taken this route. I really would like insights on how to pursue a legal career in the US. I understand that the LLM route has several visa restrictions.

2. Do JRF students in NLUs are in reality availing 60-80k from govt for their studies or is it just on papers and never really implemented?

3. How's the situation of current JRF students at NLUs? How feasible is it to take up full time PhD?

4. Does full time PhD require candidates to be in the campus on daily basis? Does it mean being stuck in that university for 3-4 years? What's the success rate of PhD students at NLUs?

Why are we comparing Sibal with Salve and not his contemporaries like P Chidambaram? It’s like comparing Jai Sai Deepak to a Sandeep Sethi or Chander Lal, or Jayant Mehta with PPT! Salve is much younger to Sibal, and it would be more sensible to compare him with the likes of RF Nariman, UU Lalit, Mukul Rohatgi, Dushyant Dave, Aryama Sundaram or DRAMS. PS - I know that the first two are former judges of the SC. I am comparing them as jurists, and top lawyers of their time.

Hi, if you are getting NLUJ/GNLU, no matter through what category, reserved or unreserved, I would suggest you to take it. Shut the outside voice. You might face certain individuals like you said who might demean you in the start, it doesn't matter because once you get selected, the rank will be USELESS. What you do in the law school will matter. Go in there, work hard, participate in extra-curricular, your seniors will help you (take help from them, you end up learning a lot of seniors at law school) and give help when you become senior, contribute positively to your peer group and Law School will be the best thing which happened to you, trust me. Just stay positive and hang in there, no matter what the circumstances are, give your best and contribute positively! Placements will not be determined by your CLAT rank, but will be determined by what you do in law school! I wish you all the best for your time at law school and congratulations!
