My client a software engineer married a girl last year, the girl was a lawyer and the niece of a hc judge. Soon after marriage the girl left his house and went to live with her parents. She never came back and kept asking for money from my client. My client kept giving her money because he thought he'll win her over. But exactly after one year of the marriage she filed for divorce. She filed 498a, DV and even a 354a FIR against his father and brother. She demanded 25 lakhs alimony in order to settle. To make things worse the marriage wasn't even consumated.

It was not the end of it. Her uncle a sitting HC judge threatened my client that he'll throw him and his entire family in jail if he doesn't do what she wants. He's influencing the proceedings in the lower court. I'm at my wits end here. I thought of filing a tranfer petition but I don't think so the hc will even bother to listen anything against a brother judge. Other option is stalling, I stalled the proceedings for an year and the girl got desperate and was willing to settle for 10 lakhs but now my client doesn't wants to pay her anything. What should I do? The judge in question is a rather notorious judge.

I have been interning with the disputes team of T2 firms for the past six months, thinking it would change my perspective and prove to be a lucrative field that I could pursue for the initial few years before shifting to counsel practice. after the worst clat paper in its history, I ended up with a rank of around 1200, which could POTENTIALLY get me into nlu odisha in the best case scenario. however, I am sure that i will secure a seat in nlu patiala (and other lower ranked nlus) or most likely, in the DU ba/bba llb program.

right now, I am leaning towards DU, mainly because I already live in delhi and am drawn to its legacy along with some personal reasons. I am also considering a career in litigation, especially after discussing it with my parents. as a to be first-gen lawyer, i'm still a little confsued, but I am willing to improve my speaking skills and would be open to pursuing CA alongside my law degree if the circumstances and my mental capacity allow. I can’t really picture myself in an office job, so that’s not something i’m interested in. I also am slightly inclined to pursue higher studies.

the small network of people i know in the courts might not be as helpful outside of delhi, so i’m seeking advice from people who are already involved in the field.

It's certainly more than 0.1% cases. 498a and DV/Dowry are thrown up in every divorce case in order to strengthen the case. I'm myself a divorce lawyer and we file such cases because it gives us leverage over the husband and we can use it to settle the case in mediation. And quite frankly in many cases women do face abuse. But then again there are women who even go as far as to file rape and molestation cases against the family of the groom.

Stop comparing NLS (or any NLU) with IITs. IISc, IITs, IIMs, AIIMS', IISERs, and NFSU are INIs with different levels of mandates, missions, and funding. NLUs are state universities with their remit limited to the respective states. This is like comparing a state Ranji team with India's National Cricket team. The fact that NLUs want to be compared to INIs just reveals NLU's inferiority complex and insecurity.

Good points. Yes, that's true. The Karnataka Government has been nudging NLS to become a regular degree college (to take in more local domicile students). Being a state university it has to adhere, not having much of a choice. A lot of people don't know but even the land that NLS is located in belongs to Bangalore University (just leased out to NLS). So NLS has not been given its own land even after so many years. As someone mentioned, NLS will be subsumed within Bangalore University - that's the medium-term direction.

Nalsar is better imo. Even though NLU Delhi preaches of its location, but we all anyway come to Delhi for internship during internship break so, it doesn’t matter.

I'm going to be BALLB Hons. from a tier 3 NLU and after, LLM in ADR (preferably a foreign uni). But my main dilemma is, that for now should I get admitted into the tier 3 NLU or go into private colleges- just for BA LLB. Will the status of tier 3 have any negative impact in the future when I'm going to pursue LLM?

Hi- please read up the basic concepts of TOPA (bare act), RERA, Stamp Act rates for conveyances (might come handy- relevant state) and basic of Registration Act in relation to immovable and moveable properties. Also, goes without saying Contracts Act, and Companies Act, in relation to basic principles and inter play in case of transfer of property. These should cover the bases- hope this helps. :)

Let's be realistic. Post MBA, at most places, you're starting from scratch. The work is same in Big 4, in fact, even more toxic. Whenever I e asked legallyindia on this, I haven't recieved any good response. Life after an MBA doesn't look that different from life in a law firm

kiddo CAM PF lawyers charge peanuts for their debt financing transactions. Doing a 200 crore deal for a project outside India comes with a billing of 7-8 lakhs at max. Don't talk if you don't know how the world works. Even if each partner has more than 3-4 transactions of such sort a month, a lean team involving a partner and 2 A0s at max can wind up the documentation. Projects is a volume game and all about undercutting since another firm outside CAM will do the same deal for half the cost. While I'm nobody to comment on the KCO vs CAM debate, Real Estate teams charge a fixed % of their large scale transactions unlike Projects (which more often comes with a better chance of billing higher sums).

Visit CAM someday and see how much the project finance teams bill as compared to your real estate teams in Kco billing peanuts lol. An article in the NYT (links below) mentions Trump Tower Kolkata and quotes a buyer, Sumit Bhalotia from Khaitan & Co, as saying:

The article says he paid a mere $ 700,000 (5.6 cr approx) for his apartment in 2019. Let’s assume that to be 6 cr now. And since Mumbai and NCR are more expensive than Kolkata, let’s multiply by 3. So that means you could get a Trump Tower flat in NCR or Mumbai for 18 cr. In fact, I googled and saw that 99 acres and Magic Bricks have a much lower range: 10-20 cr for a pad in Trump Tower Mumbai. Just 10 cr for the cheapest one!!! 🤩🤩🤩

These amounts are much less than the 100 cr one would pay for DLF Camellias or some of the luxury apartments in Mumbai. And they are easily affordable for T1 law firm partners, many of whom are already buying apartments for 15 cr which don’t have a prestigious brand name like Trump.

So could Trump Tower then be the right fit for law firm-ites? Frankly, it’s baffling why Trump is charging so less, because it’s a prestigious international brand unlike DLF.

When I moved here, I tried to cut down costs and moved into a PG with minimal sunlight, fungus and close to no space. I was practically living in a shoe box. Moved into a studio later - its fairly small but good enough for 1 person to live comfortably. Rent is 34K and is manageable. Never really lucked out with roommates but I really love my space.

Every thing depends on how much time you are in the practice. The more time you are in any field, it will make it exponentially difficult for you to switch. If one were to consider switching from b&f to CM, it is quite tough as the scope of work is very different (Note: I'm talking about Equity Capital Markets, switching to Debt Capital Markets can be a viable option)

Vepa P. Sarthi on Evidence Law (don't go past 6th edition). Cross & Tapper is also good if you want an English law perspective. Woodroffe and Amir Ali's Law of Evidence is also an excellent commentary at least when it comes to providing a comprehensive account of case law.
