I would rather question the retainership agreement of law firms. Based on the limited understanding of labour and employment law I have and my discussion with labour and employment lawyers, the law firm model is no way a retainership model. Retainership is like an independent contract. Many companies especially insurance companies have retainership with lawyers (advocates) for consumer cases. Retainership means you are an expert at what you do and the company just need to tell you what to do and not how to do it. That is real retainership. Now compare that to a 23 old law school graduate, how law firms work in teams and there is seniority and supervision at different levels. Literally, everything is like an employer-employee model of any other company. Law firm literally have arbitration agreement with list of lawyers who can never be afforded by an associate. The entire agreement is a sham contract. We should be treated as employees and once that happens let us really enforce the law on overtime and spread over under shops and establishment act of each state. Yes, we would might lose tax exemption under 80 ADA but that imo was never meant to be law firm associates who barely have any professional expenses because guess what they are not retainers nor independent. But we will gain on overtime wages if such laws are strictly enforced.

Hi, I quit my first job at a Tier 1 after 2.5 years and had no offer in hand at that time. Maybe it was an impulsive decision - all I knew was I didn't want to be in that space. After that I made the mistake of not thinking what I actually want to do, got a bit overwhelmed and applied to law firm jobs yet again! (Corp). I got an offer from a "nice firm" in less than 2 months. When asked why I took a break - I confidently said I wanted down time to figure out my next steps. I don't know how appropriate the duration of 1 year is but from what I have seen people who quit without an offer also get back in the system within 6 months.

The bill sharing part is the best part at JSA. Yes, it does mean chasing clients to pay up but most clients do end up paying. Also, if your bill share is less, it means you have done less work. For example, most M&A and Banking associates at JSA make much much more than their peers due to the bill share. Most associates will bill a crore so you will in all likelihood make 8 lakhs over and above your fixed. Also, it means that if you are working more than you are also making more money.

Big4 won't discriminate. Can say from personal experience. Merit plays much bigger role in big4s as opposed to law firms with much better work life balance (though for tax, even in law firms, work life balance is better compared with corporate and M&A) but downside is lower pay compared to law firms (though it's still very good pay).

Have you never been to a law firm? majority of the meetings are all online or outside at over lunch/coffee etc. No client cares about your fancy interior and neither does your team get to see which car you drive. It is purely to torture associates because they can. It is their boomer mentality that no one works from home and will watch netflix 24/7

How exactly can you compare a college whose campus is now occupied by one batch only, who will graduate after 5 years, to colleges which have alumni working in firms at the top levels? Which metric do you want to employ here? On what criteria should one compare these colleges?

Thankyou very much for such advice. I can't explain how much confidence it has given me. Bcz if I don't even try, it's gonna be regret for life. And if I try it's a risk. But still, I've got some questions in mind that, what if I tried, and in worst case, 4 years I've spent.

Now, what options will I be left with. And for coping up that, how can I work now. Or it's not possible to forsee.
