Depends on the competition in the law school I guess. There'll be competitive environment always and everywhere. But it might be more in T1s, I've heard stories from my friends in NALSAR and NUJS that competition is high. I passed out from a T2 NLU, and I think except the 20-30 odd people, there was little to no competition amongst the rest. So it was pretty chill, and great socialising imo.

From a T-1 NLU. Three years in, all I have happened to see is that everyone hates each other, and would probably stab them in the back on any given opportunity. I really don't see myself having more than 5 friends after passing out, and the same goes for everyone else too.

While I do understand socialising is not the same as befriending, doesn't socialisng require you to be helpful by nature? And that's a virtue so in dearth in law schools. So folks who actually manage to socialise and have made use of "contacts" made in law school, how? What is the catch here?

I'm a 4th year law student at one of the better private colleges (not relevant here I suppose), interning in a capital markets team for the first time, having done only M&A and PE for the last year and a half.

Same. Absolutely no peace of mind. Seniors have also left the team so too much responsibility, pressure and workload when i barely have any experience as an a0 and came hoping to learn. Seriously, losing all my patience now due to meaningless work in this sector. There is no manifestation of output of the work that I do. To me, both corp law and litigation, seems to be the same wall seen from different angles. For those who say, litigation (vis-a-vis corp law) involve the real work where challenges and exposure groom an unblossemed lawyer, I ask what is the field level impact of the work that he/she does. Zero. Right. The system does not enable any importance to what courts finally hold. It is trite that Indian public do not trust courts and abhor the very idea if they are unfortunately compelled to approach courts. The system of ADR has largely failed, because ofcourse advocates want to fill their pockets by taking matters to the courts.

Saving at least 20k- I am A0, I save around 50-60K Per month.

Foreign trips- depends on person to person, if they have responsibilities, they would avoid initially, but manageable.

Major cases- depends. If it's a big transaction, yes. If it's a big case, then you are just a research assistant and don't get to argue and that part is done by senior advocate's office. Usually T1 peeps don't argue big matters by themselves.

Every university in the world has admitted people who have objectively turned out to be horrible human beings (Ted Bundy, the cerial killer, received admission offers in the 70's from two reasonable quality U.S. law schools). The job of a university is to try and make better people out of those it admits than what they were before they came in. But if people actively resist that, there is nothing the university can do.

For example, I don't think any faculty member at Oxford would have taught Boris Johnson that the rules didn't apply to him/he could play merry hell with the Queen and democratic system by carrying out prorogation of parliament illegally for his own malicious ends, but he did it anyway; in the same way, nobody at Oxford would have given a green light to Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton (David Cameron, the UK prime minister whose career as PM ended shortly after the BREXIT vote) during his student days that burning 50 Pound notes in front of homeless people is the right way to behave, but he did it anyway.

In this way, if some NLS kids (like you perhaps?) refuse to take into account the values of hard work and serious, sincere engagement that your institution is trying to teach you, there is nothing NLS can do about it.

It's work regardless. It's legal application regardless. You're saying transactional work is something anyone can do and you think individual practice is something unique? Do I need to remind you the passing percentage for the bar exam? Do I need to remind you the number of lawyers with their own table at every district court, Mr 'Self-made' Second-Gen?
Sorry, we chose a desk in a corporate office than at a court for some stability because daddy/mommy didn't raise us in a court, but in no way does that mean you demean a practice field over the other. A first gen lawyer who wasn't born into a family of lawyers

Nothing to say except for that this is incredibly parallel to my own experience as a person with 2.5 years of experience at a T1, including the mental exhaustion, and it was nice to feel not so isolated in that experience when reading this post. May we all gather the strength to change something in our lives, even if just the mental trap.

Go ahead and keep venting. Can't wake up someone who isn't asleep. Hope the real world introduces itself to you quickly. Else, go ahead and do something where you earn more, if you think you're underpaid. No one is going to hold you back because you didn't learn economics 101.

So, I'm thinking of leaving academia to join a litigation firm. I need the opinions of Rishi Munis of LI for the same:

1. My PhD is not going well. I've already invested 2 years into it, have a very good supervisor and doing it from one of the best places in India. Yet, not much progress yet due to several reasons- mainly because I had to take up the job due to lack of funding.

2. Job Dissatisfaction: There isn't any satisfaction in the job I'm currently doing at the same place I'm doing my PhD. Students, staff or faculty don't give a shit about us, have to come in vacations and the work we do often feels very redundant. Researching on mundane topics, TAing, helping in organizing seminars- can't see practical relevance of most of it.

3. No moving up in the hierarchy - I've applied for AP positions at many places, including the place where I work. Somehow, they've preferred people with 0 experience with Oxbridge over me, who has about 5 years of Research Experience. I just feel stuck here, by the time I'll pass the PhD and have a good API score, I'll be 35 and then someone may take me for an entry level position.

4. Actual Imposter: There's imposter syndrome and then there's actual imposters. When I read papers in constitutional, international or human rights law, my writing feels very uninspiring. What's the point of producing boring papers that nobody's gonna read.

5. Finally, I'm ready to slog 13-14 hours in litigation, at least some result may come out of it. At the age of 35, I may start earning as much or more than an AP, while living in my hometown. What's the point of living thousands of miles away in a place you don't relate to and can never call a home.

The reason is simple, and has much to do with how we find ourselves. Most of the compulsory courses are absolutely rubbish, we get 1/6 good prof every semester. (Mostly noojie profs who deserve credit.) The rest 5 are taught by really really really really horrible profs; in terms of quality. Profs who have absolutely ZERO idea of the subject they are teaching. Cgpa then becomes something to be 'gamed' to 'look' good on your CV. Because, ultimately batch rank is almost the sole determinative criteria from internships, to jobs, llms everything - at the most basic level even if you do v well w extracurricular - a bad batch rank/gpa will significantly limit your opportunities.

Overall this scoring marks is "well known" to be totally divorced from learning (and for good reasons); and ordinary prudence dictates that you avoid risk.

Now enter good electives like Lovely Ma'am, SKG's etc. If you take them, you are sure to see your GPA and Rank dip. For your competitors ( rent seekers) will for sure go for these 'sub-standard' electives where marks are freely distributed as the holy man from Nazareth distributed bread. Bad profs give high marks to refined rent seeks. (good profs make you work.) (and remember that throughout the compulsory subject marks 5/6 times are already 'gamed' entities.) Barring Tri, KCo etc., most firms rely almost exclusively on GPA for the very round of screening - dayz and internship. Ofcourse again this GPA is nothing but a stack of proof how how well you game the system - people w high GPA just know how to do it well. You can choose to opt out of this game, get good electives - but you risk losing - worse, others will keep playing and winning. Zero sum, infact. (System rewards rent seekers and punishes people who wish to learn.)

Ofcourse, this is goddam despicable. 'Somebody' wanted to be different and focus really on learning. But NUJS and the free market punished 'everybody' who did it. These 5/6 profs highly reward bullshit and have little care for true learning. They give marks to 'anybody' who can do a set of few tasks and pander to their ego (an important move in the game, you see.) Fighting w the system is useless when 'somebody' has a loan to pay. And the flame for learning extinguishes when 'everybody' realises that sucking up the these 5/6 is really needed for the high GPA otherwise " almost all" HRs will throw 'your' CV in a bin.

Anybody who wonders who the 1/6 profs are, here's a simple test: they read the projects you submit carefully, so you start working on it atleast 7-10 days in advance.

Look buddy, if you want to just cry, nothing will happen and what you wrote would be a self fulfilling prophecy. Just throw all these things aside and give your best shot to whatever is left. Crying, drinking, dying nothing is going to change this but if you really want to change everything, just give it your best shot. There are many who don't get placed (assuming you don't get placed), so start small. Then make your way up. As I mentioned above, I'm assuming a basic intelligence. I'm sure using it, you can do it.

I had a confirmed virtual internship from a small Mumbai based boutique law firm - based on a call for interns the firm itself had put out on LinkedIn. I applied and they reached out later and confirmed. However, when the time came for the internship to begin, there was no communication from the firm. Plus, the mid-level associate whose contact info was on the confirmation email went incommunicado when I tried to reach out. All my calls went either to voicemail or she would not pick up. Also, her official email had me blocked since all my emails bounced. This firm is supposed to be 10 years old. Has anyone else been scammed with virtual internships?

Again, no one owes you a job. Expecting that strangers should employ you because you did well in a couple of exams is the definition of entitled. Firms are doing just fine without your HR advice. But please feel free to cold-email and announce your entitlement to everyone so that they understand who you are.

Lol, what great faculty have the IoE brought to India and what amazing research or students have they produced till date? IoE status doesn't bring foreign faculty unless they are paid a lot more which means the fees are much higher. The central government institutions don't have any decent faculty, hence can't even use the grants that they get to produce any good research.

- How can you confirm if a person is gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer/questioning? What if people lie about it and get a government job on that basis? Did the Congress mean trans persons and intersex persons, or the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole?

- Even assuming only trans and intersex persons are meant, does the Constitution permit it? I believe the Karnataka HC has suggested that the answer is YES and asked NLSIU to consider it in the context of student reservation, but is that enough?

Enough with this central university nonsense. You people clearly lack any other argument and obviously flunked CLAT/AILET and for some reason remain bitter about it. No one is choosing Jamia, DU or BHU over any NLU despite the former being central unis. If a university is well-supported and funded, that's really all that matters and on that front, NLUD is one of the best NLUs. And honestly, NLUD wipes the floor with DU. Don't bring in some CLC guy from 50 years ago who became a senior advocate/judge. The quality of students in DU's 3 or 5 year program are worse than NLUD any day.
