I did. But, the plan is to shift to litigation later on. I believe it will be a smooth shift from being a sarkari vakeel to an independent litigator, additionally being a sarkari vakeel will help me to make connections and do networking in many districts which will later on help in independent practice at HC.

On the other hand, if I join judiciary then problem would be with networking, as one needs to live like a hermit and hardly I will be able to connect with advocates.

I have come to notice that it is almost always people from extremely well off backgrounds who enter or try to enter corp law. A couple months ago, when I was interning at a T1, one of my co-interns was the son of a VP of a pretty successful company, he still wanted to slog off in a law firm despite the fact that he could be literally doing anything else. The guy had money that is beyond reach for anyone already, hell he used to arrive to the office in a luxury sedan that is dad got for him. I just don't understand why someone who is already so well off, with the luxury to be doing anything else that they love be willing to slog off infront of a computer screen for 12-13 hours a day.

Lololololololo...kiddos to her, but it's a personal glory. Many have got it before. Many will get it later. Does it do anything for the institute? For the judiciary and litigation ? For the country ? No. Does NLUs become important ? No. They remain state universities that need to beg in front of state govts for basic amenities.

It is an incredible achievement for vibha certainly but the programme is still quite shit. You yourself know how the average from your batch and your juniors have been performing. But yes, kudos to Sudhir. Handpicking students for the first batch through personal interviews certainly helped in getting the right people in. Now that it has stopped, even you know the standard of your junior batches.

Vindicates Sudhir’s decision to start a 3 year LLB. This programme is got off to a great start and will be another jewel in NLSIU’s crown. Other NLUs are cooked because the admin are not investing in improving the college and faculty are leaving for NLSIU and Jindal.

I don't know if the VC lobbied, but even if he did so what?? Wouldn't you want your VC to similar lobby for scholarships and funding for students?? I say well done to the student and well done to the VC and alumni if they worked behind the scenes. We need more Sudhirs in other NLUs, instead of rotten, corrupt and lethargic people from the TLC mafia.

I don't know who she is, but I just hope and pray that she specialises in commercial law and is not ideologically left. Because too many Rhodes scholars are ideologically left and specialising in human rights. The scholarship was never meant to favour one ideology over other. If an arch right-wing person like Viktor Orban can be awarded a Soros fellowship solely on the basis of grades, then surely an Indian student with libertarian or conservative leanings should also be awarded the Rhodes scholarship, looking solely at grades? Barring Arghya Sengupta and JGLS VC C Rajkumar, I can hardly think of any non-left people awarded the Rhodes.

It's also really unfair to prioritise one branch of law over others, especially given that commercial law subjects are really difficult and involve hard law and lots of technical analysis.

Credit to Sudhir and efforts by alumni. For 8 years the Rhodes committee denied NLSIU in the interests of diversity and affirmative action in favour of other NLUs. Sudhir and alumni requested them to return to business as usual. Looking forward to another two decades of dominance.

Just keep a laser focus on studies (when in college) and work (when in internship). I can understand that it's difficult. Have gone through it myself. But you can pull through it with focus on right things. Consider yourself lucky since you aren't at home. I was at home when I had my issues. And yeah, remember one thing, for a talent, there would always be a place. May be slightly late, but surely there would be. You're in a T1 NLU, so I assume some level of basic intelligence and capability. Just put it to use, ignore distractions and despair and you'll be through. After five years, you'll probably be reminiscing about this and patting yourself on back at how much you grew from this phase.

And why shall I overlook tech salaries or FAANG salaries in your opinion? Getting into these companies and the T1s entails a similar level of probability and effort and yet at least there is a better WLB in the former than the letter and still, the difference is huge. Saying that look at other people's pay in the profession is such a fallacious argument. Are you such short-sighted to be able to see that all of this works like a cartel and pick any firm whatsoever and it reflects a lala-type business model and etiquette in itself. The ass burn SILF got from the notification allowing foreign law firms in India even though subject to high level of restriction is an evidence that how we all are exploited in this field and only the previously established ones have power polarised to themselves. Like we have got the same workload as that of Merchant Bankers but a pay of plumber when it comes down to the value of time we invest. I will say just get over the fear of feeling inferior if you see the whole wide picture and accept the facts as they are, to at least not be a roadblock to any change which the upcoming generation might be willing to bring in.

You're right. Just that you need to be sure of your basic economics. You're at a starting stage and can actually experiment with the things, with your financial cushion. But do make sure that you don't burn any bridges with the profession. You may end up coming back in any capacity.

Actually T1 lawyers are paid way above the average. If you only look at FAANG or tech salaries, you'll always feel underpaid. Sometimes looks at earnings of others in legal profession also and you'll realise how better you're paid. Don't even suggest about stagnant starting salaries. It's also to do with margins and rates. And yeah, economic reality - Associates execute, for which you get paid for execution. At each level, responsibility rises and for which comp rises. If you think you're underpaid, just go for other options you've instead of cribbing. Really will make you much happier if you don't crib and just do it.

ICUL Funds team is paying exorbitant amounts forget just matching the payouts of others. Also the counsel did not move alone but moved with other team members too. Several junior to mid senior fund members have shifted from Trilegal to ICUL Funds team over past couple of years and all are continuing there so pays must have been taken good care of.

I've 1 PQE in White Collar Crime litigation with strong grades from a Tier 3 NLU. I'm considering transitioning into law firms and am exploring the best approach to make the switch. Could anyone share advice on positioning my experience effectively for corporate/transactional roles or if any specific firms are receptive to litigation backgrounds in similar cases?

None of it is integral to being a good lawyer. Classes aren’t integral to being a good lawyer- many good lawyers in this country have degrees from universities they barely attended. Legal education at one point was just interning with a lawyer long enough until you learnt the ropes. You are free to pursue that path if you like- it’s just not what the nls promise is.

So , I’ll ask again - why are tutorials not an opportunity to get more out of law school ?

Not really, you will get a draft along with an earlier sample to work on. Then your SA / PA will give comments while reviewing. Atleast thats I how I learnt. Then when the draft goes to the Partner, he makes further edits / gives comments which you can then note.

I am from a state government university law college which doesn't even come under decent college, and is not even known anywhere, the only plus point I consider is, it is in the city of high court of our state. Now, I had given clat was getting tier 3 nlus, and private colleges, same with mh-cet was getting pravin gandhi at best, and these are not considered that good for placement, so I thought I would stay here and do better. But since 1st year was partial drop I don't have good grades, and now I am in second year, and I still havent done anything I thought I would. I have done 1 internship normally, one online with ngo, and a content writing for legal writing, which is more than most ppl in my class, but I don't want to compare myself with anyone around in my university (other than marks), as most ppl are not interested in much of anything other than getting a law degree. Writing papers, or articles seems daunting, my peers don't seem to have much interest in moot courts or such competitions, and internships without any connections seems impossible. now all this comes off as very cry baby, and maybe till now it is. But I would really like to improve my situation, so any thoughts on how to do at least at par, and have doable skills that help for future placement, or just for getting better internships.

Hi. Is it a good plan to work as a sarkari vakeel for first 10 to 15 years of practice and then shift to private practise, if one is financially constrained and too add to that is the meagre pay in litigation. Would be a good plan to work as a sarkari vakeel in district courts and then jump to HC as an independent counsel?

Any suggestions?

Done and done baby boy. My best bosses and allies were women. I also had some really kind male mentors and a couple of aggressive women but no woman ever went as far with bad behaviour as the men with their fragile egos and shouting and screaming.
