I can not tell the exact amount. But I have interned under a decent trial lawyer in bangalore where most of his cases are in district court and very few were related to HC.

He was paying a rent for his office around 30k(the office was fairly big and near the court, although I am not really sure about the rent part) and he also has 2 junior one was getting 30k and other one 15k.

His consultation fee was quoted around 5k but I seen him consulting even at 2k also. Depends on the client capacity.

I would say he must be making anywhere bw 2-4 lakh per month. The frequency of the cases depends. He rarely rejects any client even though he has to lower his fee. All the fee he receives is in cash. So I don't think he is paying any major taxes.

A leading trial lawyer in Pune, especially very highly regarded for his knowledge of commercial and real estate law and of civil procedure, is known to charge Rs 10 lakhs as a retainer each brief, and Rs 7.5 lakhs for each effective appearance. He easily makes around 20 cr plus with a 5 day work week and 2 months of vacations. He can live like a king in Pune. Instead of living like a king, he lives in a one bhk "because that is all i need" and has instead a 2 storeyed air conditioned building which is perhaps the world's the finest private collection of Sanskrit and Pali manuscripts.

I say this as someone who has been kind to everyone. It's not worth it. The people that I have seen succeeding in law are always those scheming douche bags who are always trying one up you. They resort to manipulation to capture all institutions. Nobody succeeds just by being good. All successful people are evil. The only thing that varies is the degree of wickedness. Some resort to it in less measure, some go full throttle. Anyways, I have maintained my inner goodness because it helps me sleep at night. For people with questionable morals, they can sleep at night even after harming others. If all you care about is succeeding at all cost then being nice is not worth it. If you care about your peace and consciencence then it's worth it.

I agree with this entirely. I've learnt this exact lesson and boundaries are so important. Be kind, know your people, but take care of yourself first and foremost. Being selfish is being nice to yourself, and that's the most important. It doesn't mean you can't smile at people or be friendly. However, friendly should not mean giving your notes and assisting others with your strengths, without any return. Even if there's no return, helping may be viewed as an investment, so invest in others wisely. If you want to be charitable, be charitable to those who need charity.

In competitive environments showing nice behaviour is just like giving a free goal for your rivals. Throught my life I have studied in both competitive and non-competitive places in India. And no also infra, classes and prospects were brighter in the former, the people were just not up to the mark. On the flip side while the latter lacked these facilities, they had way much warmer people so much so that I never had a single bad experience/memory from that place .

Yes. It is. You won’t see benefits from it right away. It will take time. But it absolutely is worth it to be nice to people. The best person in my batch sent her notes to the whole class, tutored those of us who needed it separately, never had a single fight or disagreement with anyone.

It paid off for her in a big way because people would work with her on anything she wanted. And after graduation - would do her any favours she wanted. You could be competitive with everyone else, but you wouldn’t be with her. There were very few instances of people being nasty to her in law school ( far fewer than most) and she basically had an easier life in law school because she was nice. Her five years had less drama than anyone else’s and she was allowed to focus on learning and improving herself because she was so nice no one wanted to bother her with drama.

Here’s the thing though. You should actually genuinely want to be a nice person. It cannot be an act. I don’t mean that there shouldn’t be some animal part of you deep down inside. That’s there for everyone. I mean that you should sincerely want to be good to other people and tame parts of you that are more primitive.

I disagree completely with the poster above who said there’s some deep distinction between nice and kind and to be kind instead of nice. I think that’s only true for “nice guys” who bother women. For most people - how you treat them is what they’ll remember and being nice is a good pro social thing. It just is. And people who aren’t nice often justify to themselves that “yeah they might be rude or have an outburst or be emotionally disregulated but they’re not all bad.” Of course no one is all bad. It just does take extra effort to be nice and people who do it are trying to do so must learn to be more patient and even tempered in the long run.

We have an off from 28th to 4th Nov at Indus. We have already informed our clients that we will not be working. The firm has agreed to fund our teen Patti games as long as we share 50% of the winnings with them (up to a max of INR 50k).

Essa and Ashwin are both great guys from AZB. But their working style and manner of interaction was never traditional AZB i.e. both were generally work focused and peaceful guys and most importantly, nice guys.

Even if pay is market or lower than market, it’s a place you can work at, happily, peacefully and without fear. Go in with your eyes closed.

I am a fresher who graduated this year (did an LLM in IP and Tech). I have applied to T1, T2 firms but sadly, no luck yet. I know it is hard being a fresher with no big connections, but hang in there. Keep applying. Instead of think tanks you can also start applying for in house roles because they usually require some IP skills.

title. the saying "work till you no longer have to introduce yourself" means nothing for law, investment banking, consulting etc because no matter who you are in Mckinsey bain kirkland etc., if u dont tell ur name nobody would get to know. over the past few years, ive had this realisation that everybody's deck of cards is different and no matter how hard u work, special status like that of legendary athletes, movie stars and businessmen is reserved for a special few who may or may not work that hard. just felt like venting it here. so be happy with how much u make, how far you've come because there is no chance in hell why someone doing a regular job working 16 hours a day could ever make it big in the eyes of society (like cr7 big, mark zuckerberg big). you do you my friend. love to all my bacchas <3

Hi everyone as someone in the law field how can you become rich enough for an international vacation atleast once a year without compromising on your savings, insurance, etc. Is there anyone here who does that? If so, how do you do your investment? Also, can a lawyer set up a side business?

As someone who observes the news closely, I have come to notice that certain quarters of the media, in active collusion with key power centres in the bar, are being excessively harsh on the Learned CJI, and that too right before his demiting office. Dushyant Dave was particularly unforgiving in his critique (see the interview he gave this week to Thapar on the Wire). Now, even the powers that be at the SCBA (without even consulting its own members, like me), are using their clout, questioning DYC for “unilaterally” altering/ embellishing (I’d rather say enhancing and updating) the get up of Lady Justice. I for one believe that DYC is doing a stellar job as CJI - miles ahead in many key aspects compared to his predecessors, integrity being one of them. Like, I joined this profession when KGB was the chief, so ya! 🤦🏻🤷🏻 I believe that we’ve come to an unfortunate point where the hunger for power has gotten so desperate, rabid and out of hand, they’ll throw stones on anything and everything - even when there’s hardly any reason to.

So then 1 cr pa is a pretty meh salary? Assuming 50% of these 2.3 lakh people live in Mumbai, then there are over 1 lakh people in Mumbai earning that much. That’s a lot!
