JSA and TL are true T1. They are truely professionally run, no papa or mummy on top holding lions share. TL started seeing its potential sooner, JSA is a bit late. All others have survived because the papas and mummys have agreed to dilute a little. Either that continues to happen and they too become professionally run one day. Or they wither out.

Just my opinion people, you dont have to agree, or lose sleep over it.

So you have to understand, Tiers of law firms isn't a thing, its rather the specific team.

For example, CAM ECM is tier 1 obviously, but its IP practice may not rival some others. JSA B&F is obviously t1, but its GC generally isn't. CAM/ SAM GC is strong, but can it rival Mr. Iqbal at JSA. Can NKUs Comp practice rival any other firm? This affects pay in bonuses and partnership as well.

Gonna speak from an Associate’s pov- We take interns to do the work we don’t have time to do. When we ourselves were interns the same thing happened with us too, you’ll realise this once you reach the other side of the tunnel.

Further, sometimes we might also not give interns work and this work has come directly from our own seniors to whom we are accountable. We can’t tell a PA that we’re waiting for the intern to send in the draft so we could review it and send it further to you. We know the transaction at hand, we know the client and if possible, we do actually involve interns.

Would you be able to guide me on what steps I should take to be able to gain an internship at LegalLogic? As in, what do they look for in a candidate? Even though it is my second week of LLB, I've thankfully already managed to find an internship under an advocate. I plan to learn the basics here, and score well in my first sem. After which, I was planning to apply at LegaLogic. Would that be good enough?

Shashi Tharoor proposes new law legislating fixed working hours for private sector. This should soon become a reality and shall also apply to law firms, CA firms etc. 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day. You can leave at 6:30 with no questions asked policy. You need to work 7 hours a day + 1 hour for break including lunch/ tea. This will prevent exploitation of corporate slaves. Honestly It's not even 90th percentile, possible 97th onwards. I gave the NLSAT in 2024 and got ranked AIR 435 and even had a friend who ranked 220th but neither of our part B was checked. Just a simple message which stated that we have no been offered admission. The reservation is all the way up to 64.5% and this is not even including Karnataka reservation. There's barely 15 seats for general male and at max 30 for general who aren't under Karnataka reservation so it's honestly barely worth it. Plus you'll be stuck studying 24/7 and working on assignments because of their trimester situation. Plus no history of placements because the first three year batch has not yet graduated. If you're fresh out of an undergraduate and have not had time to create a career out of anything, I would honestly suggest going for other law entrances such as MHCET or CUET etc. Most colleges in maharashtra 3 year llb don't have attendance criteria so you can work part time or intern legally. It's a better chance at creating a career there. NLSIU is known for its 5 year course but you don't want to be stuck in the 3 year course paying close to 11 lakhs to wonder where you might end up.

Sorry, how did you legally do this given the attendance requirements? If someone is smart enough they might catch you and your entire degree might come under suspicion. The right thing for you to do is HIDE your work experience while applying for judiciary, say you did your LLB with nothing on the side and get in. Don't post your work ex on LinkedIn or in any social media bios etc

Changing jobs is not easy for everyone. He was 42, most probably would have a few dependents, if he had left the job, he would have died of hunger. Getting a job at 42 is a tough task, have seen this happening with my father as he lost is job as his employer went into liquidation. Suicide would have been final resort for him, because having no job at that age causes a lot of miseries. Those days are really bad, no one should have such days.

There's no lawyering to do in those corporate jobs and that's why most lawyers look down on them. Also, speak for yourself. I'm doing pretty well for myself financially. Instead of wasting your time here, go work and help those lala firms get richer, or they might lay you off.

Why do law firms find it so hard to do anything good for the people working there? Other than the money being paid (which is not something anyone could be applauded for), there is hardly anything meaningful done for the employees. Firms make it very hard for normal people (especially without any support - either professional or personal) to survive. Stringent expectations from employees to make work their life and workplace their family are rubbish, demeaning and absolutely contrary to productivity. Case in point - a law firm planning to stop its 1 (ONE) day wfh policy and make it mandatory for employees to come 5 days a week. No lawyer should be at their partner’s mercy or (even worse) law firm’s mercy to be able to work from home just because they want to. If an individual wants to work 5 day from office as a matter of choice, they are more than welcome to. On the contrary, if an individual wishes to work 3 days from office, it should be their right to do so as an option without any guilt or shame. Policies being drafted by uneducated HRs and toxic partners to please their maaliks and make themselves relevant are truly unprofessional and backward. There is no forum where anyone could afford to raise a voice without any backlash, consequences or fear of consequences.

Indian law firms cannot compete with their foreign counterparts due to the sheer lack of trust on the employees and toxic positivity. Clearly not having a union for law firm lawyers does not help. Indian law firms are broken with no respect for their associates and with no positive REAL change being undertaken for the workforce.

Something small needs to change at all levels to make the work environment better. What are some meaningful real changes that you would like to see in your workplace (which are not just a hogwash) and how do we raise it?

I have shifted from capital markets to M&A. Honestly I never worked on M&A deals that time so I didn't know anything, I knew how to do DD. I prepared for interview and when it came to practical knowledge I lacked there. FEMA related thing I didn't know that time. So I ended up in a small firm (but my package is similar to tier 1). So I am happy I managed to change my practice area as I am never going back to caps market.

I am a non NLU student (but a well reputed college) who, by some stroke of luck, was able to score an assessment with a T1 which eventually translated into a job. However, the practise area is not something I particularly enjoy, and see myself doing for the rest of my life.

Only issue is that the skills in this practise area are not transferrable at all. I will have to start from scratch wherever I go. Firm also has no rotation policy unfortunately.

If I go look for opportunities in a firm for another practise (Disputes/Cap Marks/M&A), will my T1 experience in a completely unrelated field boost my credibility, notwithstanding my sub par grades and lack of internships in the area?
