This is a very cynical and disrespectful way to instrumentalize a classmate's tragic death. Law schools should work on creating a supportive environment but the way to do that is not compromising academic standards or their faculty's mental health with unscheduled exams. Who do you think sets questions and grades them? Gremlins? What about the support staff who have to print papers, open rooms and do all the admin work for extra exams? Are they elite? Do you think they get paid extra for the extra work?

You are right about the need for more support for marginalized students but this will go much further if you understand that law schools have small budgets and are run by human beings who are usually less elite than most of the students. Ask for things that can be given. Pitch in and say how you will help change the culture. It is not all admin created, students add to the toxicity and can add to the change.

To the First-Years: A Reality Check from Your Super Senior

It seems some of you are quite entitled, so let me clear a few things up for you:

1. The millipede issue is a regional problem affecting Gujarat, not just GNLU. This phenomenon occurs occasionally, and there’s not much the university can do about it. In previous years, it hasn’t been as bad, but unfortunately, your batch seems to be the unlucky ones. Entire villages in the area have had to evacuate due to these millipedes.

2. I’m not sure which floor you're staying on, but the housekeeping staff cleans every floor four times a day. Plus, you can request additional room cleaning whenever you want. Water coolers and RO systems are available on every floor—I’ve been drinking the same water for four years and have never fallen ill. Fogging is done twice a week to control mosquitoes. Dengue is a nationwide issue right now; beyond a point, it's your responsibility to take precautions. Maybe stay in your rooms and focus on studying instead of wandering around campus all the time.

3. Your Freshers' event was canceled because of your batch's behavior. Many first-years have been caught smoking weed or drinking alcohol, even after repeated warnings from the wardens and professors. Also, considering the semester is almost over, hosting Freshers' now is logistically impossible. But don't worry—Garba will be in full swing soon. Focus on your CETs for once.

4. College isn’t just about making friends and having fun. It’s about education and hard work—something your batch seems to have forgotten. You're spending more time on Instagram than focusing on your studies. GNLU is one of the most relaxed NLUs. There’s minimal academic pressure, and the administration gives you a lot of freedom. There are barely any hostel curfews, and numerous events and conferences are held regularly, yet you don’t seem interested in attending anything educational.If you’re finding it hard to survive at GNLU, maybe you should consider transferring to a local university because NLUs might not be the right fit for you. Schools like NLUJ, NLS, NALSAR, and NUJS have far tougher curriculums and fewer resources than we do. GNLU is one of the richest NLUs—you have vending machines installed everywhere, a metro just outside the campus, GIFT City nearby, a three floor library. You get access to pretty much everything. No other college offers such a combination of resources and a laid-back administration.

It’s high time you guys concern yourselves about what is more important. With the kind of attitude and work ethic you guys have shown so far, I’d be surprised if most of you manage to clear your first semesters tbh.

The primary reason is the lack of supply. Mumbai city cannot expand because of its peculiar geography. It is surrounded by sea from three sides so you can only expand north to south. This makes land availability a massive issue in light of the growing population . Even on the northern side, there is the vast Sanjay Gandhi National Park which is a protected site and cannot be urbanised.

Another issue becomes the lack of connectivity. Infrastructure is poor and things like the Atal Setu, Coastal Road and the metro should have been built 20 years ago. It's not convenient to travel long distances for work. So, people wish to stay closer to offices. This again inflates the real estate prices, specially in South Mumbai where the offices are mostly concentrated. The local train is humid, overcrowded and outdated and not a viable option to cover large distances daily. This poor transportation infrastructure compounds the first problem aforementioned.

Another issue is the city being home to billionaires, celebrities and business magnets. The fact that you live anywhere close or in vicinity of any VIP drives real estate prices upwards. Living in such neighbourhoods becomes a matter of prestige and rodomontade.

IMO this is a problem unique to Gen Z and will end with Gen Z. I meet with a lot of Gen Alpha kids: in my building, among friends, at a place where I play sports etc. I think Gen Alpha is a pretty sensible and mature generation. The problem with Gen Z is that they were brought up when a lot of the tumult confronting us happened too fast and left them and parents unprepared. Gen Z were born soon after 9/11 and the Iraq War. Then the Great Recession happened. Then ISIS, Trumpism, Wokeism, TikTok, influencer culture, YOLO culture, FOMO culture, PornHub, OnlyFans, extreme nationalism, consumption and finally COVID…. and now jobless growth and overtaxation. Too much stress and adrenalin for the brain to absorb, boomer parents clueless on what to do. On the other hand, Gen Alpha was born to Gen X parents, a little more savvy than boomers and prepared to handle shocks better.

Just my two cents of analysis.

Gen Z has absolutely been mentally battered by rising competition in academics and jobs, by social media toxicity and pressure, and by COVID. I am sorry to sound pessimistic, but nothing can be done about this generation and we need to save Gen Alpha instead before it’s too late. The issue of academic/job pressure can be taken care of with greater reforms and rising GDP. The issue of social media toxicity can be taken care of through a complete ban on social media until age 18 and a limit of 1 hour a week from ages 18 to 25. Remember that Instagram and Facebook are as addictive and harmful as cocaine. They want you to stay up the whole night scrolling on click bait reels and sex-related content.

Recently when IIT Guwahati students asked for their dean to resign, he did so within a day, along with a few others. In contrast, this RGNUL VC wants to hold on to his chair. See the difference between a national institution and a state university. Such people are in love with their chairs/positions - a stark difference in cultures.

The good students are tormented by these hoolingans but the innocent students are forced to join in the protests. These non-serious students party in restaurants till wee hours and still want entry without any objections by the security or wardens. Many of them do not attend classes but try to pass the exams.

This is the story of 2nd or 3rd tier NLUs wherein a number of faculty (not all the teachers) maintain total silence and enjoy the hungama on campus.

The Patiala VC has committed mistake by entering the girls hostel as he never knew that issues of female privacy can snowball into a controversy and it has really snowballed.

I understand that work is fluid, and there are busier times than others. That's not what I'm talking about. This is when interns are taken on when, for whatever reason, there is zero scope to give them anything to do whatsoever. Before anyone feels the need to be snide about interns 'not being good enough', again, this is before there has been any opportunity to evaluate their work or to form an opinion about them. The same intern was also clearly decent enough to pass your screening process, so it's a reflection of your standards if they are still deemed unfit to be given work at all. It is immensely frustrating to spend time and money going through the most opaque of application processes, setting up base in an entirely new city and hoping to do your best only to be met with "we have no work to give you". Leaving at a reasonable time is also frowned upon and so the expectation is to sit in the office doing nothing. If you're too eager for work or keep asking for things to do, you'll be yelled at for bothering the team. If you independently do research related to the work the team does, nobody has the time to read it and you shouldn't be 'over-enthusiastic'. You can't volunteer to help some other team out, because you're bound to the one you've been assigned to exclusively. The expectation then is to kill 10-12 hours a day. I've taken to studying the syllabi for courses I'll have to do in the future. It might seem like a non-problem because interns are paid and so, who in their right mind would complain about getting paid for nothing, right? Wrong because a) costs can exceed the stipend amount significantly and 2) sitting in a decked out glass prison when I could be making use of my skills isn't very fun. Just don't take people on if the end result is a waste of everyone's time and resources.

how stupid do you have to be to compare NRI reservation with caste-based reservation? The NRI seats should be allocated to general/reserved candidates proportionally, and not to rich brats that buy seats off their parents' money. The only partially sensible reasoning for their seats is that they help subsidise education for those in need. But again, the accountability should arise for state funding, and not a corrupt exchange of seats for funds.

Work more with individuals than firms and found the experience better. There's more personal attention, timely responses and industry knowledge. In my experience, I found the Bhargava sisters good, an individual called Michael Ronald helped me out a lot, Naina Rathore was great.

I'm in the same boat, my senior doesn't even acknowledges me. And his son gets all the opportunities plus he's very rude to me too. I too don't get to file vakalatnama, it's frustrating. I'm gonna quit this shitty chamber. My senior's son feels like it his own chamber and those are his cases.

Here’s a mix of the good and bad, from what I’ve observed as a junior counsel:

4. BMWs, Maybachs, Pateks, suits tailored from London

5. Friends in high places. If you join politics, a Rajya Sabha or at least a Vidhan Parishad seat

6. Money can buy honey 😉

Cons:

1. Health problems arising from stress and lack of exercise: obesity, hypertension, heart disease.., possibly an early grave

2. Those two overseas holidays a year are the only quality m time you spend with family: so just 15-20 days in a year. So your family may grow apart, or they will love you only for the expensive gifts you shower upon them.

3. For many people, you simply lose your conscience and morals, defending the most corrupt and honest people in the world.

I am a fifth year student currently. I can do a 6 month internship from november to april. I can get this internship through connections in following firms - Indus law, Crawford bayley, LKS, Khaitan. I had prepared for corp mna because it usually hires more, but i am open to disputes as well (for indus.) I am doing a diploma in Arbitration drafting and have done more courses.
