I’m an associate at a tier 1 in Mumbai, considering shifting to Delhi considering proximity to home and significantly reduced rent. A little apprehensive because of safety concerns because well…Delhi. What is the work culture like in Delhi law firms? Do associates have flexibility to leave around reasonable hours (8-9ish) and continue working once back home? Or are women expected to sit in office late into the night (2-3 in the morning) with no measures to ensure security?

Ha ing worked with the two of them, I'd say both of them are good. Yogesh also has good publications like Arul. They worked well in a centre with opposing ideologies, Yogesh being pro IP and Arul being not so pro IP.

And there are teachers like Shubha Ghosh and Watal in that program as well, so how bad could it be.

I would say Jindal because it gives comparatively more attention to LLM students than NLUs, where students, faculty and admin all treat LLM students like sh*t. In fact, at NLSIU there was anger at the suggestion that LLM alumni should be allowed to attend alumni networking meets alongside BALLB alumni.. Also, you get more freedom in terms of campus timings and discipline.

So for this reason I would say Jindal over NLUs, including NLSIU.

Tier 1s are the only places worth working at in this profession. Even if there is toxicity and stress, it isn't even close to what the Chambers and boutiques have. And you're getting 3x the pay. If you can't manage to land a Tier 1 or Tier 2, it's best to leave the profession.

Okay, I’ll probably get a lot of downvotes but as long as OP’s purpose get’s fulfilled and someone learns something, I’ll sleep well at night.

I work in Cap Marks. It’s not been very long but 2 years is enough for me to give an opinion here. Yes, the work life is terribly demanding but there are ways around it:

1. I take 2-3 small vacations every year (3 days of leave and 2 days of weekends) and 1 big vacation (10-11 days). This gives me enough headroom to relax and enjoy.

2. Since Cap Marks is DD heavy, I just put on my headphones and watch movies while I’m working as well. So, that’s a good time pass.

3. There is work on weekends but scheduling it smartly is the key. I go out every weekend for lunch and dinner or shopping or movies, etc.

4. You can still give time to your family as long as you know how to schedule stuff.

(BUT for all of this to be true, you need to be in a team that doesn’t squeeze the life out of you)

You can meet people from all walks of life. You can’t just date co-workers. Go to a bar and talk to girls, socialise and I don’t think you’ll face an issue. (Provided….)

As sad as it sounds, it depends on the college. I've seen people with the bottom of the pit ranks getting placed in Nujs and Nalsar.

Nluo placed people with rank in 70s in 2023, same with maybe other colleges in similar tier. I've seen 50-70 getting placed easily jgls.

If you're in a t-3 NLU or a private college that isn't Jindal or symbiosis. You either to intern endlessly or should be ready to get out of college and grind with chambers and counsels where you might have to prove yourself in month or twos time

I am an RP at a T1 firm (M&A/PE). Have started bringing in clients. Fairly confident to make equity (good sizable equity) in next 5/7 years. Had batch rank of 90 something in a batch of 160. Graduated in 2013 from a low(est) rung NLU. Didnt know jack about M&A / PE (didnt even know what the abbreviations meant).

My (not so secret) secret: Just keep at it. Send a shit ton of cold emails, cold calls, etc. Some T20/30 firm will take you in - go from there. It all goes in one direction, upwards. Never too late to start working hard :)

I've been fortunate to have cleared the PhD written entrance exam for two universities. One is a expensive private college and the other is a top 3 NLU. The problem is, this is the first interview of my life. I have absolutely no clue how to prepare anything. If anyone has successfully passed a PhD interview could you provide some guidance. I know both these places have a very high academic standard. So I definitely need to step up. I have atleast 1-2 months to the interviews. What all do I cover ? Also my PhD proposal is related to human rights.

Bro - you seem like someone who takes projects from seniors and pass it off as your own. You are expecting someone to just hand it over to you. Why dont you spend some time on seeings there in the legal news, some amendment or judgement (I think competition law thresholds just got notified) and start from scratch on that topic? Third hearing and same scene. Kapil Sibal does all the arguing and Menaka G is practically a mute bystander. Just saying yes to everything Sibal says. I mean, here you have someone who is:

- An Oxford-Harvard and Rhodes alum

- A Senior Advocate elevated directly by the SC

- Someone who has argued one of the most important human rights cases of all time

- Someone who has been listen by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, for that reason

- Someone who has won the Jefferson Medal, for that reason

You need to work hard at lower pay in a tier 3 first. Gain some experience and contacts and network. Sooner or later you will find a position which you will be called for. I am from LC2 in a tier 1 and there are many partners who are from CLC in our firm and also other tier 1s. Don’t lose heart and keep trying

That depends on how much they want to adhere to the rule of law. The insulting of the office/title of judge attracts contempt. If the judge is not acting in his capacity as judge, and you did not disrespect him in his capacity as a judge there contempt should not be attracted.
