IMO a great career waits people who graduate in STEM subjects, work in IT for a bit, then do a law degree.

I am from the 2025 batch and have a PPO from AZB Mumbai so I can talk to you about their hiring practices. AZB is slowly shifting their focus to hiring predominantly from PPOs rather than Day Zero. Their yearly intake is about 40ish A0s every year. They try to give each of their partners one A0 from every batch (they have a partner buddy system, and there are currently 35 partners with a couple of promotions on the way). They also only take students from the top 10-12 law schools in India for internships so you'll need to be from Jindal/SLS if you're from a non-NLU student or you will need a strong contact in the firm. Even if you go through a contact, do good work and you'll get an assessment. Hope this helps!

OMG you guyzzzz….. this is a WHISTLEBLOWER CORRUPTION case first and foremost. Yes, male toxicity and misogyny are major national issues, but this case is not the best example of it. I am from Kolkata. The mood in Bengal is very different from the rest of the country. Whereas the rest of the country is treating this as a generic issue of women’s safety, patriarchy and doctor’s safety, the people here are specifically viewing this as a planned killing (and subsequent coverup) of an honest girl student who tried to blow the whistle on multiple scams in the hospital, where the TMC involved. There is a lot of focus on the allegation of the student’s parents that there were told to accept it as a suicide and offered money. In other words, the rape and murder was a means to a larger end: to cover up a humongous scam. The Bengali media says that the scams allegedly involve cash for grades, sales of fake medicines, sex trafficking and organ trade. I must stress that these are still allegations and leaders like Mahua Moitra have dismissed them as rubbishy and false propaganda, ie it was just a straightforward rape and murder out of lust and misogyny, not the targeted assassination of a whistleblower.

Another point to note: the educated middle-class in Bengal has always been against Mamata, and she is opposed by the Left, the BJP and the state Congress. She has always been winning on the strength of the rural vote and slum vote (through various doles) and the Muslim vote. But now the feeling is that these votebanks may gradually abandon her.

Ten men raped a woman doctor to death and then tried to cover it up. Hundreds more wish they’d been doing the raping. Sorry if I’m not feeling particularly fond of Indian men or particularly proud of being in a country where this sort of thing still happens.

This is not - boyfriend and girlfriend had sex and there was an awkward moment of miscommunication. Ten people don’t get together and rape a woman if they aren’t all sharing in the vilest misogyny imaginable. And no one is covering it up if they care about women at all. And no one should be celebrating that if rape culture isn’t real- but here it is.

Why don't you read up about his career? While reading for his DPhil, he taught also in Oxford. Please find me students from that time (2005 - 2008) there who spoke out against him. He also taught at another UK uni for a couple of years, I believe - University of Buckingham. Again, find out which student(s) there have nothing better to do than troll a guy who is a genuinely good teacher. Finally, he also taught at Columbia for a while. Their recent antics not withstanding, I think you'd find it hard to find any Columbia Law School folks from that time who would repeatedly tell lies about him - a phenomenon limited to a few trolls at NLS and NUJS, whose behaviour will be one of the factors that contribute to the struggle for both those institutions to be the Oxfords, Buckinghams and Columbias of the future to be much more arduous.

Kindly provide a copy of the "faculty and staff" signed solidarity statement. Before you get upset and angry over this request/demand, kindly recall or ask your alumni (esp 2018/2019 batches) about a shameful incident involving our then Registrar (Acting) SAK and PIB.

A group of students who were involved with IDIA had intervened in the HC to help slum dwellers of Subhas Sarovar to receive rehabilitation before dodgy eviction being engineered by the local councillor. In violation of HC order, the councillor organised the eviction anyway and NUJS students intervened. They were badly groped and beaten up. PIB, SAK and none in the faculty and non-teaching staff did anything to pursue police action against the perps. Instead SAK issued a written statement distancing the univ from the humanitarian intervention by students. So much for legal aid and social justice education!

Fortunately, it has started becoming quite apparent to many working legal professionals in India that India is too restricted and conventional in its legal space, which is too much focused on litigation happening in dilapidated infrastructure of the country or at max dull corporate phenomenon where the law firms advise businesses in deal making (which is kind of secondary task again).

An interesting question is, can't India export its legal services/products to the world and contribute tangibly to the economy. I agree, legal services are not similar to those in STEM professions. But it can at least move in that direction. Transformation to this avatar is the need of the hour!

Only compliance remains but it's a fish market place where even account writing shops compete. Then comes CAs. An ambitious lawyer should not waste his energy in this.

Looking to switch from a T-2 as I think I am getting underpaid, so I approach recruiters. The usual.

Very transparent with all 3 that I was working with, wrt who all I have applied with and what recruiters etc.

All 3, after getting me interviews, started ghosting me. All three of them. I had told them that I can take the rejection, please let me know if things do not work out, so that I can plan accordingly, but no. Straight up ghosting.

I expect it out of Company/Firm HRs, but recruiters also? What a nightmare. Wasted close to a month with these guys.

Best is to do your research and not rely on centers, etc for things that you can probably research and find out. NIRF is based on actual data submitted by universities and can be a reliable source.

Also, over time, each University has faced some issue or the other. None has emerged unscathed. So students should be aware of this and set their expectations accordingly.

I can claim to be a bit of an expert in this field (alum of an IB school, interned at a career counselling company, interacted with lots of IB school alumni). Take it from me — here are the career preferences of IB kids after school:

1. US Ivy Leagues or comparable (Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UCB, Duke etc)

2. Next tier top US colleges (eg UCLA, Northwestern, USC, Purdue, Carnegie Mellon etc) OR top US liberal arts colleges (Amherst etc) OR top Russell Group UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE, KCL, UCL, Warwick, Edinburgh etc, but not maybe Nottingham or York or Newcastle)

3. Other good US/UK universities not in the tiers above (eg Fordham, Rutgers, SOAS, Nottingham, York) OR G8 Australian universities OR premier universities elsewhere (Singapore, Europe, Canada)

4. Other universities abroad not mentioned above, and some niche places (eg University of the Arts London or Raffles School of Design in Singapore)

5. Stay in India: Ashoka or law at Jindal. For the smarter ones, engineering at BITS or Manipal, or medicine at a good private university like Manipal or Sri Ramchandra.

6. More options in India: KREA, Flame, non-law at Jindal, any course at Symbiosis, maybe a tier 2 private medical or engineering college. Amity or Bennett as a last resort

Re top Indian government universities like IIT or NLUs or AIIMS, it’s rare for IB kids to even try —- they get scared by the high levels of competition and the low number of merit list seats (IB students are usually in the general, non-reserved category). But there have been cases of a few students cracking top NLUs and even IITs. These would definitely be a top 3 career choice for them, but maybe not the top choice. I know of cases where kids have turned down IITs for MIT and one old case where someone turned down NLSIU for a non-law course at NUS Singapore. Plus a very old case where someone chose KCL law with full fees over NLSIU (child of a senior lawyer, who subsequently qualified as a barrister and returned to India).
