Which city? For Bangalore, it seems a decent package for a boutique firm? Obv, not compared to the Tier 1 pay which has now breached 20 l. p.a. If you still have not accepted the offer, see if there is scope for negotiating. But there are corporate firms in Bangalore including well known firms which pays less than this. So if it were me, I would look at other considerations as - like learning, culture, seniors, etc. From what I have seen, tier 1 good pay comes at a cost- consistent 14+ hours of work on all days of the week, and that too on really small portion of a large transaction with no exposure to clients, guided by people just a few years older to you, and the pressure of 'up or out'. If 8 LPA gives you a decent quality of life (no educational loan, parents/siblings to take care of etc), but makes you a better lawyer over time, why not. I might consider it tbh. Do you mind sharing which firm is this (If they are hiring for more people or if you do not end up taking the offer that is)?

Does Sudhir's marking criteria for exams include "ability to draw false equivalences" and "ability to be an idiot (to put the foot in the mouth) in an attempt to be disingenuous"? If the exam marking criteria does include these, you would be top of the class.

So I am from Law College Dehradun and I am to graduate this year. I gave clat pg exam and got a AIR of 1000 and I even got a decent college. But my university hasn't released my final year results yet. As I had two backlogs which I cleared in the month of July. And I need to submit my documents asap. I have been through my university n number of times idk when they will release results. Can anyone tell me any good private colleges in Delhi which accept late llm admissions incase things go south or can anyone tell my what I can do with this degree?

It comes back to the point I made...law as a career starts only after atleast 5-10 years of practice somewhere. Since you mentioned Linklaters, two of my very senior acquaintances are working in Linklaters. One of them is from a TLC, the other is from one of the OG NLUs. However what's common in both is that they have atleast 10 years+ experience in litigation or law firms before applying. As I said, law is a experience based career, first get the experience and then as the years roll on, you'll see a lot of opportunities pop up. The struggle is slow, the benefits are aplenty.

Moreover, legal departments will always be smaller in size compared to sales, marketing or whatever else they have for STEMs in corporate. The legal vacancy will always be highly competitive. Therefore the only way to beat the competition is through experience, not school name. On the other hand, coders, software developers, sales managers are dime a dozen when it comes to vacancies. That's why they get picked up immediately.

However the other side is corporate is not the only avenue for us, like for the non-law. Our home is actually the bar & the bench. That's the real world for us. Judge, prosecutor, advocate, legal advisor etc is something that a MBA or Tech can never be. You can work as a corporate lawyer for decades and drop out whenever you want & start a private practice in the courts. A MBA will leave one firm and either make another or join another, there's no "private" practice for them. So if you look at the larger picture, we have more options than a normal tech or MBA. It's just that you are choosing only to see the "corporate side" and let's be honest even then when they're in a soup, they need us to bail them out. So don't be hard on yourself. Be proud to learn the law.

It’s because law as a profession is still in the licence raj era and has not liberalised like other industries. An IIT grad can apply to Google and Facebook in Bengaluru. A NIFT grad can apply to Adidas and Levi’s in Delhi. But an NLU grad cannot apply to Linklaters or Mckenzie in Mumbai.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble so late. But law school was never supposed to be a job guarantee institute like IIT or IIMs. Law as a career has always been a hustle career that actually starts post graduating from the law school. That's why 5-10 years of post struggle in courts was seen as normal. Now since the last decade, due to law firms, people have started to see the rise in placement and packages like btech or MBA. However, the majority 90% work outside law firms, and even for the 10% that do, there aren't that many law firms to accept. Your best bet is start wherever you get a chance and build up from there. Dear if you are from NLU D, there's no point in defending the college when the figures are in reality just plain "Bad"

I'm from the 2025 batch of NLUD. I understand your point but in a pool of 95 people, atleast 70 of them were interested in getting placements.

Now, the college is not bad at all, the ones who worked hard, all got placed with a minimum 16L+ salary. The college brings in shit ton of opportunities for you to get placed, each and every tier 1 firm offers internships through RCC to us, just like all other top NLUs like NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, etc. The only difference is the intent of the students to work hard in that internship.

I've seen SOOO many students just waste their internships by simply leaving office at 6 and going to party after that.

The college cannot be blamed for the follies of the students. I do love my College, it has given me everything I have. I just hate the lazy batchmates I have (who are now crying that the college didn't get them places)

Agreed. It's a demand supply issue. There will always be a demand of gullible and innocent kids who think this actually adds some value to their CV, that by paying 1/2k they're getting access to some kind of gold mine which will help them get that sweet corp gig. But you can't really blame them. Hope better sense prevails and ppl see these linkedin hustlers for the absolute frauds they are.

A0 at a boutique firm here. I've been having trouble communicating the specifics of a deliverable with my Partner. Either he doesn't discuss anything about the specifics or he just doesn't some lip service so that he can bother me for not converting his half-thought ideas into complete fleshed out clauses.

I know that a an A0's job is to complete a deliverable to the furthest possible extent, but recently I feel like I've been completely left to my own devices. Should I just stop caring about the quality of work?

Also, can a partner offer someone a ppo even if there isn't any vacancy, especially in the disputes team at a T1 firm?

Not sure. There seem to be two pay structures. One type is a lower salary with a share in fees in the cases you work on. Another type is a high salary.

Could also be a political lawyer. Read about Tejaswi Surya: declared very little assets during the 2019 election but in the 2024 election after becoming an MP declared several crores, saying that it came from a law firm he has started.

Another example: Sanjoy Basu, friend and close associate of Abhishek Banerjee. Completely unknown junior lawyer before the TMC came to power, now a multicrorepati and recently bought a major Bengali newspaper.

For one, private universities encourage their faculty to publish in Scopus indexed journals to improve the research score. GNLU has never done that yet. Private universities like Symbi also focus on getting visiting faculty from abroad, offer extra credit courses etc. GNLU is behind in that too. The crux of the matter is that GNLU is ahead because of its students and despite its faculty and admin. If it ever gets such dynamic admin who will go that extra mile for the university, then it too will easily rank within top 5 regularly.

Is it common to have probation period at NON tier 1/ 2 litigation firms at Bombay? I'm not a fresher, I could've definitely understood had that been the case. This is one of the hiring condition stated by the firm. That too, for a period of 6 months.

Naturally the firm is bound to follow practices they find best suitable. However, need an insight from those who have joined as an Associate with such a lengthy probation period.

I spoke with an A3 and A1 in that firm
The A1 (band 2 in srl) said that they do not get anywhere close to 1.5 lakh per month (which is the highest monthly compensation advertised by the firm)
The A3 (band 4 in srl) said that their monthly pay is 1.5 lakh while the lowest monthly compensation advertised by them for band 4 lawyer is 2 lakh
