Essentials, cash & bedsheets: Did your law firm give you a Diwali gift this year?

Besides getting a breather for a few days across offices, Diwali is a special time for lawyers. And sometimes there are even gifts.

We have been told that associates and support staff at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan were gifted bedsheets to celebrate this year.

As in, proper bedsheets, by Raymond, which we have to admit is rather useful.

At Trilegal Mumbai, meanwhile, gifts ranged from stuff by Forest Essentials and chocolates, depending on your office location.

However, we are told that there were no Diwali presents for lawyers at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas this year, at least in Delhi.

And, many years ago, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas apparently had a tradition of gifting lawyers Rs 101 on Diwali.

We also asked one long-in-the-tooth partner about whether there was any law firm Diwali gifting old days. “Don’t think that I ever got any,” he said, adding: “Not surprising: every time someone tried to roll one of those I’d ask for a raise instead.”

And that, kids, is why some law firm lawyers become partners, and others stay associates.

But seriously folks, happy festive season all! And do share your most (and least) favourite law firm gifts in the comments below.

I left JGLS for a law firm. At JGLS they gave the following. Better than my firm actually.

1. Teapots/pans etc from Art D Inox (lifestyle brand owned by Jindal family)
2. Box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
3. Bedsheets and pillow cases from Bombay Dyeing.

If you would have noticed. Your parents gave lot of money to JGLS. So they give you gifts from your parents money. Law firm are paying you money.

Let's clear the air about foreign law firms. If they come, they will hire the cream of cream. This super cream, if we call it, will anyway be receiving super bonus.

We hardly received any Diwali gifts from the management during our days with the law firms. But, of course, some corporate houses used to give gifts (in kinds only) aplenty. The gifts used to pour in 2-3 days prior to Diwali. It was difficult for juniors like me to carry it back home as we did not have our own conveyance. Later, some of the clients started delivering it to our homes. But ... diwali gifts from employer (law firms) ......... never ever.

Been nearly 4 years since I left S&R - they still hunt me down each year to send me Diwali gifts - last three have been to my Trilegal office address. Classy AF.

You are still having to declare to the rest of the world that you scored more marks in some stupid exams than 100 other people out of the billions in the world? That's borderline pathetic, mate. Get some real achievement of your own and then brag about it.

In US firms I worked with, there was always something nice for Christmas.
As associates also had secretaries, we were supposed to give them Christmas presents too. Usually a $100 gift cheque would be considered nice and polite.
