Only 1 of 160 pass latest Bombay solicitors exam outright (4 more slip through on grace)

Only five candidates out of 160, or 3 per cent, have passed the latest Bombay Incorporated Law Society (BILS) solicitors exam.

No first time test takers passed this time, said BILS examiner in charge Dawood Mandviwala, adding that out of the five who did pass, four had barely passed on the “border line with some grace marks”.

Grace marks are awarded by the examiner when nearly no candidates pass an exam. This is done after consultation with the committee and approval from the presiding BILS high court judge, explained Mandviwala.

“I believe that most of the articled clerks signed their articles during their course of their employment with the individuals or the solicitors firm and usually they don’t get exposed to the type of work required during the articled period,” commented Mandviwala about the reasons for the low rate. “And since they are in employment they do not get six months leave recommended by the Society. The sum total is low grade performance.”

Recent years’ results to the gruelling exam have ranged between 2 and 6 per cent, with grace marks also having been awarded in some previous years.

The exam covers six subjects, including litigation, tax and commercial laws.

The AORs examination must also be made this challenging, and to weed out the rejects that have crept in over the decades, all AOR's must be made to requalify by writing an exam every 10 yrs, with mandatory pro-bono service and attendance in certain lectures on contemporary subjects and issues..

The rejects are probably better than the rest, who are unfit for even being considered for rejection !!

Yes, and why don't you propose all lawyers take a test every 5 years? Law is not about knowledge of latest legislation, but about a thought and approach. Any semi-decent lawyer can find out the latest law when he gets a brief. The AOR practice is useless and only aimed to give judges a consistent format, which can even be checked by a computer. Also, what's with "mandatory" pro bono? Are you a Nazi, or unaware of freedom of profession and the meaning of "reasonable"? It's the State's burden to provide free legal aid, not individual practitioners'.

Exams are just that, exams. They do not prove the actual worth of an individual. Retaking the exams every ten years serves no purpose whatsoever. What builds and ensures your skill as a lawyer is the experience gathered post your education, alongwith your education.

Mandatory pro bono? Lol. Did you get rejected in an AoR exam?

Why AORs should requalify exam every 10 yrs? If "Recommendation" is so necessary, all advocates must requalify Law exam after every 10 years.

The BILS is composed of a pack of dust gathering, old school, 80 year old fools who have nothing better than coming up with all sorts of tricks to safe-guard their (so perceived) high-pedestals!

Down with the BILS exam...

Simon...go back!

Obvious that the negative comments are by those who either never had the confidence to even attempt the exam or having attempted it failed miserably! Its an exam which has very high standards and am glad that the society tries its best to maintain them..

Inside news is 2 - 3 additional people have cleared after submitting their revaluation applications, but sadly the same has not been disclosed either in this article or by the Bils on the notice board. It would have been better if the system was more transparent then it claims to be.

Do you check the BILS notice board every day? :) ... To be fair.. Kian's publication is not BILS' official announcement.. if he misses information I don't think BILS is to be blamed!

Kian at some point you have to explain your system of filtering comments.. I am sorry to say that I have read absolutely disgusting comments on earlier LI articles.. but when I am congratulating candidates who have passed that comment is not posted? I am no journalist but I think personal bias should be kept out of reporting.. looks like you are only posting negative comments here!

To be fair, BILS cannot be blamed for the misreportings by LI!

Ha ha .. I like the way you put it. However since the results were being publicly reported on this forum, it would have been better if all details were given by Bils or its spokesperson. It is because of incidents like these that one can't trust the system completely.

Before someone jumps and says what proof do I have to say there were revaluation cases, I might as well admit that I don't have any proof, however even in the past Bils has cleared people in revaluation rounds but their names have never been disclosed.

I am not here to lay blame and say that the system is tainted since there are fair number of cases without mom and pop contacts who have cleared, but a little more transparency never killed anyone.

U r obviously not a solicitor cause if u were u wouldn't sit around tallying the results! And since you have urself confessed that ur contention might just be a friction of ur imagination.. Am not sure how the BILS or anyone for that matter can shed any light on this and be 'more transparent'!

Just because I am looking at the results does not imply any of what you are trying to state.

I have stated and clarified enough.

BTW, u a solicitor? Or just a public gyanee?

Are u one of the so called people who passed after reevaluation and are looking for ur name to be published somewhere? Adding to this article that one or more additional people have passed with grace marks does not change the gist of what the article is trying to say - only one cleared fully - others cleared with grace - overall only few have passed!

Given that most of the readers have disliked my comment, its acceptable that my comment isn't showing. Some days back I had put a further comment stating that I do not have any basis of saying what I mentioned however I was told that certain people clearedon revaluation.

Take it as a rumour, but would be great if kian could do an official follow up of this article and check with Bils and let them come on record to say that no one cleared on revaluation.

I don't have anything against the exam because in spite of rumours of people passing because of influence there are genuine ones also who have cleared.

Good luck to those preparing or planning to take the exam.

You are right Sherlock! They are all related! Part of the same family! – the human race!.. haha.. get a life.. 3 - 5 ppl pass every six months they cant all be related to the managing committee.. unless the managing committee’ family is constantly producing kids so that they can be passed in the Solicitors exam!.. I had no influence whatsoever and passed this exam with a lot of hard work.. I do not appreciate you demeaning others just because you have a personal agenda against some.. and also I think that if people have worked hard and passed whether they are related to someone or not should not be used as a prejudice against them.. don’t worry not everyone can pass this exam.. better luck next time!

Yes, you are right Sherlock! They are all related..they are all part of the same family..the human race!! Get a life.. 3-5 ppl pass the exam every 6 months.. They can't possibly all be family members of the committee members, unless the family of the committee members have devoted their lives to constantly producing children so that they can be passed in the solicitors exam!.. I had no influence and have passed the exam with hard work I do not appreciate you demeaning the efforts of others just because you have a personal agenda against some.. And also my personal view is that if someone passes the exam with hard work their relationship with anyone should not be used as a prejudice against them.. Grow up!
