Ayes for NLU-D, NLS Bangalore at Nalsar Brit Parliament debate

NLU Delhi and NLSIU Bangalore won top prizes at the first Nalsar Hyderabad inter-varsity British parliamentary-style debate, besting 26 other colleges.

The motion in the finals was “This House Will Award the Death Penalty to Public Officials Convicted in High Profile Corruption Cases”, where NLU Delhi and NLSIU clashed with two teams from RV College of Engineering.

The format for a British parliamentary debate involves four teams of two members each opening for the government, the opposition, and closing for the government and opposition respectively. Teams are given a preparation time of 15 minutes and each person’s speech lasts 7 minutes.

“This produces highly nuanced debating, requiring not merely an adversarial but a comprehensive understanding of the issues,” said Nalsar student and organiser Tarun Gopalakrishnan.

The NLU Delhi team consisting of Ambar Bhushan and Aayush Srivastava won for the opening government side, with NLSIU’s Maanav Kumar and Abhimnayu George Jain winning the individual speaking honours.

The event was sponsored by law firms Tatva Legal and Linklaters.

It was a really great effort by the NALSAR lit and deb committee. I think this was one of the finest debates i have been to (and i have been to many).
I hope this improves the debating culture in India and law students think beyond mooting.

NLUD won the FINALS! Not just for the opening govt. side! And NLS speakers were highest scoring in the prelims! So much for accurate journalism.

Can't beleive that LI is mincing words when clearly 5th year NLS students lost to 2nd year NLU Delhi kids.

Yes NLUD speakers were 2nd and 3rd but the best speaker award award for the debate was jointly given to 2 NLS speakers- Maanav ans Abhimanyu, who were by far the best.
And yes, i do know what u did on break night.

The NLS guys were simply awwwwssssoooommme! No kidding! Well deserved best speaker awards! I dunno why they lost in the finals!

NLUD students are treated like jail inmates by the jailor R. Singh.

The curfew timings are from 4 to 6 pm. Imagine? You can be out of the hostel only from 4 to 6 pm! I really wouldn't want to be in such a jail.

Dont you know the difference between the hostel and the campus. Campus Outing timing is 4 to 6.

Why is it that Legally India is so biased against NLU Delhi? I have noticed this on more than one occasion. Are we all jealous of these kid so much now? Let us grow up!
I think this entire thing is a sham. NLU Delhi won the finals. Quite brillantly if I might add. Where is that written?
Let us give credit to people where it is due, shall we now?
An atrocious piece of journalism in my opinion.

NLU-Delhi ! I couldn't make it to this prestigious institution ! I barely had a 58 in my AILET :( but I had a 150 in my CLAT ! :) Thus I can safely conclude by saying that NLUD is tough and quite strict in every aspect ! I guess 6-7 years down the line it would replace my law school as the second best in the country !

6-7 years down the line you wont be in the college which you are currently in :) as long as you manage to pass all the exams
