Fox & Mandal Kolkata - the Kolkata partnership of the Fox Mandal group of three firms - has hired Khaitan & Co Kolkata senior associate Atreyee Sen as a principal associate in its corporate practice.

The 2006 NUJS Kolkata graduate had worked at AZB & Partners in Delhi for 10 years before joining Khaitan.

“She is an excellent lawyer possessing a wealth of knowledge and will complement our corporate advisory and transactional practice,” commented Fox partner Debanjan Mandal, in whose team she’ll be joining, in a press release.

The Fox Mandal partnership has two offices in the city, five partners and around 45 lawyers across practice areas, according to the statement.

Because we only very rarely write about the Cal market and Cal firms, so it's a little bit interesting. :)

A Senior Associate in ten years? Her peers would be partners (including at Khaitan, I am sure) - is it only competence of the lawyer, or is it that Khaitan's promotion policy is different for Calcutta (for whatever reason, for ex. not as much corporate work as there is in Mumbai or Delhi)?

If its the latter, then I think its discouraging for a lawyer. Firms have opened offices in cities other than Mumbai - Delhi - Bangalore. CAM and SAM are both in Ahmedabad. There's JSA in Hyderabad. I am unsure if these firms also follow a similar approach. Differential promotional policy based on location within a firm is not healthy, and should definitely be discouraged.

She worked for AZB till 2016, as the article says. How exactly is KCO's promotion policy relevant here? Obviously during the lateral shift, she didn't have enough bargaining power to immediately get a higher position.

She was in Khaitan for 2 months before resigning. How does that make her a KCO lawyer. It is like having a layover at Dubai while flying Emirates and saying that I am an ex UAE resident.

I don't think this Khaitan stint matters really... i would compare Khaitan to Bangladesh and AZB to England or America...since being in Khaitan is nothing to really boast about really, they should have actually left that information out !

Atreyee is an excellent lawyer and human being. I agree that this article does not really contribute much to the legal journalism of the day, but these personal attacks are not on! While countless lawyers become partners (or associate partners, joint partners etc.), these involve various concessions on both sides. Atreyee has balanced her career, 2 kids and managing a household in Delhi adroitly and as such, has done much more than these so-called partners.. She has also been the supportive lady behind the super-successful Krishnayan Sen (VERUS Advocates). Give her a break!
