Friday fun: What people think Indian lawyers do versus what they really do

Dear corporate law firm lawyers, dear advocates. Have you ever struggled to explain to your non-lawyer friends what you do? Does your mum know what you do? Seniors, clients and spouses do not seem to have much of an insight either?

Legally India has provided a one-stop shop for answers to the questions of all those people. Well, two shops actually – a “what people think I do and what I really do” meme each for the Indian corporate lawyer and the Indian advocate.

The “What people think I do/What I really do” memes are a series of visual charts that have become widely popular on the Internet since 2 February this year. They depict a range of preconceptions on any given occupation or expertise, comparing the impressions various people hold about one’s profession.

Both of Legally India’s lawyer memes have gone viral on our Facebook page, together grossing almost 900 Likes, over 500 shares and counting…

We are presently working on other categories of memes. Suggestions are invited on the same!

Hi Anon, there's not much more on Facebook except for same image with the comments.

Everything else is on this page, so if you're stuck in an office with a strict firewall, you're not missing out on too much...

If you are on Facebook, here's another one we made today, this time about NLSIU Bangalore students...

Feeling much better about my office firewall now :-) Must say it's a good initiative; but I shall keep this for Mondays as Fridays are anyway relaxed. Monday is the day when this column will come really handy :-)

Ms. Shrivastava,

You are right.

I know of many lawyers (Mr. Bean), who are practicing, for example securities laws/capital markets, without having any kind of domain knowledge (or any kind of working experience) of Indian securities laws or capital markets.

The problem is, the client gets carried away either because of their "pedigree" (including foreign affiliation) or "looks" (Ms. Bean).

Many of the them alo survive because of "google".

The one on NLS grads is a bit crass! Kian with your "The Lawyer" pedigree your reader expect very high quality not some cheap shots, albeit LI is still a good initiative and has good articles. I think you need to focus on the good articles.
Thanks,
