Bollywood law comedy-drama Jolly LLB has received three legal notices for allegedly depicting lawyers in a bad light, defaming a law college, and causing ridicule to a lawyer with the surname Jolly. The journalist-turned-director Subhash Kapoor’s film is slated for release next Friday (15 March).

Advocate Manjit Singh Jolly has demanded a change in the name of the film because people were allegedly ridiculing him.

Meerut-based advocate Parag Garg served the producers Fox Star Studio India, alleging that the presently aired-trailers of the film show lawyers in a bad light. He demanded taking the trailers off air and staying the release.

Delhi law firm SC Gupta and Ankitt objected to the film’s protagonist Arshad Warsi referring to Meerut University as his alma mater in the film’s trailer while misspelling “appeal as apple” and “prosecution as prostitution”. They sought cancellation of the film’s release certificate. [Mid Day]

Lawyers also alleged that the movie trailer’s content amounted to contempt of court and was in violation of the Cinematography Act.

The Delhi high court dismissed the law firm’s public interest litigation. Justices D Murugesan and VK Jain said it was too early to examine the movie’s trailer in context.

Senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul, appearing for the film’s producers Fox Star Studio India, argued that the petitioners had approached the court just a few days before release of the film “as a blackmailing tactic”, since the trailers were on air since January 2013.
