Trilegal Mumbai-based counsel Arun Joshi has joined Morgan Stanley’s India legal team as vice president legal.

The banking, finance and project finance lawyer was made counsel at Trilegal in 2019.

Joshi, a Symbiosis Law School grad, had from 2011 worked at Deutsche Bank, joined Wadia Ghandy in 2012, L&T Infrastructure Finance in 2014, and Trilegal in 2016.

The Morgan Stanley India legal team is headed by former Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas partner Ipsita Dutta, who had joined in 2016.

We have reached out to Joshi for comment.

Trilegal Mumbai partner Karan Singh commented that he wished him well.

Joshi is the fourth Trilegal counsel we have reported to have moved in the past weeks, with Shamin Shah joining Trilegal client Naspers, Tanya Mehta moving to Brookfield Asset Management, and Padmaja Kaul joining IndusLaw as a partner.

Trilegal are pursuing an excellent inorganic growth strategy by admitting partners with “books”, but that is at the cost of their own lawyers whose career path seems to be to become counsel, hit a dead end and leave for better prospects. And their so called “all equity” partnership model is questionable, since counsel (given the sheer number of them, even looking at only the ones leaving) is their equivalent of salaried partner. But kudos to them for selling a story well!

Bang on buddy. They have done very well with selling this idea.

The fact is so long as a lateral comes in with a book, a counsels chance of making partner wont be impacted, since the math for him remains the same. It may be that they don’t have the numbers to justify so many internal promotions

Again - congratulations to Arun who is really quite an impressive lawyer. One of the few banking finance lawyers in Trilegal who really understand the market.

The comment was more to the point that a Trilegal counselship may actually be a bit of a career dead end considering, and I say this with all due respect, their limited ability to promote people to partnership internally. Also shows why lateral hires are increasing - partnership appears to have had a bit less success in growing the pie than they would have liked. So getting laterals with books is really making a virtue of necessity. Remember this is an all equity model.

Promoted to counsel in 2019. How does that justify that he was ignored for partnership? He wasn't eligible yet I think...

6 Counsels made partner this year, so hold the conclusion jumping. An equity partnership will never make the same proportion of partners as a firm which has salaried partners.

Trilegal has few laterals compared to the others and very few additions just for book. This guy only made counsel this year, so he had at least 2, probably 3 more years to be considered for partnership and chose a different career path by going in-house rather than joining a firm.

Counsel or PA? 7 Jul 2019, 06:56

Is a Trilegal Counsel equal to Khaitan PA? Or does Trilegal also have a PA designation?

2. How many years does one take to reach counselship?
