Tata’s Vistara gets Trilegal counsel, Symbi ‘07 Shashank Jain as GC

Trilegal counsel Shashank Jain joined as joined Vistara (Tata Sia Airlines) as head legal effective today.

At Vistara, Jain is replacing former legal head APK Chettiar.

A Symbiosis Pune 2007 alumnus, Jain started his career at Juris Corp and later did his LLM in 2010 from the George Washington University. After a stint at AZB & Partners he joined Trilegal as senior associate in December 2013 and was promoted to counsel in October 2015.

Vistara is a domestic Indian airline that is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines formed in 2015.

Jain declined to comment. We have reached out to Trilegal for comment.

The headline says that he is the new GC ,while the reporting mentiones Head legal. Which one is it ?

Is there actually a practical difference between GC and head legal? They often refer to the same thing, but are mostly a function of company internal structure and nomenclature. Unless there is a GC above him also?

In my experience we had a Group General Counsel who was more appropriately to be referred as Gossiping and Generally Counselling (unsolicited) because thats what he did. Legal Head need not necesasrily be a GC. Can be anyone else. Anyways only tags on paper for outsourcing matters to law firms.

I think we may often feel that GC sounds more grandiose, but I suspect that this is mostly because it's originally a US American word (though I'm not 100% sure if that's right).

But effectively, GC just means the most senior lawyer in a company's in-house team, which is functionally the same as legal head.

Not really, know of some US companies who have functional heads as Head - Legal and a GC supervising all of them!
